dead right you are. SO why do you dance. If you are not dancing for the attention for others then why do you dance... i ask out of interest? You say "bellydance is magic" what is the magic if it is not the power of attraction? I want to understand, not to challenge :)
@lsdvine I want to dance because when I dance I feel Happy. I went into depression after my brother died. And when I started dancing, i could forget my pain. It was an outlet of expression for me. Since I couldnt find words to express my pain. Each dance step became words and the dance itself became my voice. There are many dancers out there who thinks they know belly dance and do something sleazy for cheap attention. And there are also dancers like me who knows the history behind an artform
Isn't the purpose of the dance to be entertaining and provocative? Define sex any way you want but bellydance in any form may or may not be sexy to the beholder. I may watch you dance and never view it as sexy. But another woman may dance to the music using your same technique and be highly arousing. The personality makes a huge difference.
Your speech made many to retrocede and others to surrender to your ideology! Brave! Beyond exelente dancer u'd one strong candidate to the presidency!
You are amazing! Everything you said is 100% real and true. When I watch other belly dancers.. I see more hard work put on their face rather than their belly dance moves. They get so obsessed in wanting to look so pretty that they're dancing becomes boring to watch and makes me wanna watch other belly dancer who is amazing and beautiful dancer like you! You are sexy and the kind of sexy you are is appropriate kind of sexy. (=
You're very clever. Thanks for posting an intelligent comment on this youtube-amateur videos. Go ahead for what you believe on and just forget about the mainstream.
So what is sex? What's the difference between sex, eros, attraction, beauty? Men will always appreciate beautiful women, some more explicitly, others may not say it, but they still think it. Dancers have to "balance" on that thin line. So don't waste your anger on these people, and don't try to educate them, it will not work. Our dance will only lose this image by showing its beauty proudly, not by hiding it. And good dancers like you must chase the "black sheeps" out of the market!
Kaliyug Ki Sita Ki Uljhan .. that's the song that I listen to when I feel sad from these kind of situations (especially version 2), it's very comforting somehow.
Sex has been in religion since the beginning of man, sex has been in marketing since marketing began, sex sells, you can do whatever you want. If you don't want to take it to the erotic or sexual then don't. You can do what you want and keep it true to whatever your artform ideals dictate. But there are a lot of starving artists out there too.
if you dance on stage you dance in front of people coming to see some kind of art.
If you upload a video on youtube, you're watched by pervs etc. Don't be surprised, YOU and only YOU up the video. Deeply somewhere you must like it, and you totally have the right to. Enjoy
@psyl0caine Well not all youtubers are pervs. Ive more females subscribed to my channel than males. And they are dance enthusiast. So please dont get judgemental!
Any guy who claims that he isn't aroused by watching an attractive belly dancer perform is either lying or gay. There's no universe where a man can watch a woman dance in a revealing costume and not feel excited by it. Anyone who pretends otherwise is conning themselves.
your right belly dance is a great and beutiful thing... and really works your abs i wish i had good ab muscles like you and isnt it supposed to show your belly. but yea your 100% right
genieshanu, I agree with you 100% don't change do you, but I do understand you totally and your videos are not bullshit to me but they help me understand you and your dance and even your culture better, Fuck the supermodels I love the way you look, you are the example of pure beauty.
@genieshanu You are a beautiful person inside and out. Belly Dance may be sexy but it is also sacred to a lot of women. You have every right to speak out on this subject and I applaud you for doing so. If I may say so, Belly Dancers like you are and always will be artists to me. Thank you for making this video and please do not be afraid to speak your mind.
Thank you for addressing the issue at hand. I do apologize on behalf of the western culture. I'm sorry that belly dance is misunderstood. Your boldness in speaking your mind is respected. Thank you for all your teaching videos. I'm appreciating learning this art form and feeling the freedom to be myself as I do it. Blessings!
Don't change anything about you, please. Flawless is not real beauty... your inner spirit is your beauty, and you are very beautiful...Furthermore, I could not agree more about the bellydance...Bellydance is a hymn to the natural feminine spirit, and has nothing to do with sex. It's a shame it got so downgraded in our times. Also I want to thank you for all the info and the help you are giving with your videos
belly dance is an art which i personally feel a kind of pure energy,n personally i belly dance only when i feel like..belly dance is sensual, koz u express all ur passion in ur dance..u cant wear a churidar to belly dance ..so it got its own traditional outfit!
i agree that todays is more commercial based , some people looks it in a different way..
true! its better to dance on stage rather than in restaurant, n yea if u can help people collecting charity with ur talent..that would be great!
I cant agree more. I have danced in both places. And Bellydance is respected when it is danced in a stage. And i think maybe as dancers we have to be more strict about where we decide to display the artform.
@genieshanu : Heylo Genie ... Firstly thanks for making kerala and indeed India proud. You are true that most of the audience are men. I feel that you did the right thing to speak your mind . There are very few people who would be brave enough to do this. By the way for people who feel that you do not look good need to get their eyes checked. You are beautiful :). Hope the Lord showers you with success in your endeavours... All the best dear. :)
If you dance in a restaurant, the owners will ask you to be sexy. They don't see you as an art form, they see you as an investment. From a financial stand point, sex sells. The sexier you are, the more money they will make. If you want to keep your art form pure, do performance pieces on stage to an audience that appreciates your skill. You don't see ballerinas performing in restaurants, and belly dance shouldn't be different.
I agree with you completely, most people have completely changed the concept of belly dancing into something that is associated when sex when it isn't, it's an art form.
I like what you said..it made sense and you were very articulate about your beliefs.Well said.BUT,you ARE sexy, and the idea of you being a wish-granting GENIE is very sexy. LOL ;o)
bELLY DANCE CAN BE KINKY if you want to make it so, what i saying is if dance about passion how she can be sensual passionate dance with out the sexuality sensuality and so on this dance is about those thing , she and the shanu join ballet then it is better for them. you have to be a really woman and connect with sensuality to acheive the best result from this type of a dance, maybe it is american culture make evoryone like " oh my god... that too sexy " So prude and stupid non passion
First I want to say that I really admire you for putting your foot down and saying "NO, I will not change my art for you." As you say, lots of dancers get caught up in that, and it's very sad. While I agree with you on most of your points, I find your demand to keep sex entirely out of Belly Dance unreasonable. If I, as I am a belly dancer too, want to dance from a place of sexuality or sensuality, I don't want to be belittled for that, as it is my choice to express it through my dance.
I also want to say that that sexuality should be expressed from within, with your energy and (Non-vulgar) dance moves, and even flirtatious facial expressions, NOT with overly revealing costumes, or vulgar movement. Belly dance can be sensual and sexual, if the dancer chooses to do so, but Belly dance is NOT stripping (Which is an art form of its own). Keep standing up for yourself, and keep your art what YOU want it to be.
As a male I deeply respect the ancient art of belly dance along with its many historical, cultural and even spiritual undertones. Having said that, may I at this time also say...BOOOOINNNG!!!!!
Thankyou for this video. I appreciate Belly Dance as an art form and I love to learn and hope to watch your videos and learn how to perform as amazingly as you do. You are an artist. Please stick to your principles and be strong!
I couldn't agree with you more. I love belly dance because I find it to be a beautiful art, and you are one of the rare people that I've found that don't base their dances off being sexy. It's horrible when people ask you to change so you can be "sexier" for a crowd of people. I hope you never ever change, you are such a beautiful person and it's always wonderful seeing someone who stands up for what they believe in.
WOW!!! well said ...... I was really very very disappointed to see Belly dance performance when I had gone for Desert Safari and Rally in Dubai. Its more like a nude dance....... Very disgusting and disappointing......... I thought Dubai being an Arab country, belly dance would be displayed/ performed as a form of a beautiful art - not a strip dance....... Ashamed to know that even 5* Hotels in UAE are mis using these forms of beautiful dance
"i don't know how you can agree with the shanu , i said there that she have the room of a four year old your all nieve her audience is most men, they watch her and get sexual thoughts like men naturally will. i told you before in this she is a sexual entertainment on youtube, so i dont no why she say this . crazy! nothing wrong but she moans all the time."
Oriental dancers have to change this image by getting more informed abt their dance's origins & history & presenting their dance to a broader audience - acadamics, in universities, historical places etc. Dancers like Delilah etc I believe are doing this & I think more need to explore this avenue to reclaiming the image of Oriental Dance. With that sed, great video plz keep sharing more with us!
i don't know how you can agree with the shanu , i said there that she have the room of a four year old your all nieve her audience is most men, they watch her and get sexual thoughts like men naturally will. i told you before in this she is a sexual entertainment on youtube, so i dont no why she say this . crazy! nothing wrong but she moans all the time.
Hi Shanu, I agree with what ur saying in ur video. I think however, that most Oriental dancers have heaped a negative image on themselves; bcuz look at where most dance & what they wear: usually in nightclubs, etc. & dressed in very revealing costumes. Obviously non-informed people are going to think the dance is indecent.
Your identity is strong and beautiful. Your personal self and your cultural heritage are interplaying with vibrance and luster.
Cheap entertainment is what sex has become in America, so I understand your desire to move away from "sex in bellydance". Interesting video and thanks for your delightful self and your work.
I respect u very much for putting this out there. U r a gorgeous girl with great moves and if they do not want u as u r, they r not worth it. Belly dance was never supposed to be sexual but spiritual. Keep doing what u do because u r awesome!
Hi Sabreena! It's Chin Eng here, like I said to you before, although you have make this video for nearly 2 months, now I look through on this video, and I just want to say is that, I really really hope this video can make people understand about the bellydance culture, it's very important to keep the culture.
BTW-I don't know if I ever really noticed whether you had make-up on or not. I watch your videos for the instruction and guidance. Now that I look, you're already quite pretty.
If we wanted to do more than belly dance, we'd be in a place licensed for it. Some people just can't differentiate between a beautiful, expressive dance and tittilation. -sigh- Keep your dignity. I've never heard an older dancer say they've regretted belly dancing but who knows how you'll feel about yourself later doing "something else." Thanks for speaking up!!!
but he sway you have sexy moves and also sex picture on your account showing belly in more a sexual way , nothing wrong but again.. Why you made it when men find it a sexy. i understand but maybe you should do contempary where you can wear jeans something like this, hip hop dance, those dance maybe.
wow genieshanu, this is a gr8 vid. i feel the same way. sex & bellydance are 2 "completely different" things. i was very upset 2 have danced a 1st performance @ highschool & received such vulgar & provacative comments from students & friends. students & teachers griped amongst themselves & 2 the principal about why was i allowed to strip tease infront of the school. hah! show's their ignorance. i wish ppl would wisen up & show some respect for bellydance. not all of us are "like that"
Its sad...if they shout a lie loud enough...it becomes the truth...thats the same with bellydance...its a feminine dance...people should accept it as artform...
I don't think bellydancing is immune from the moral corruptions that are plagueing our cultures & art in the world presently. I think all forms of art, media, and communications are being 'blackwashed' with pornography and sexual exploitation. I'm sure hollywood or just media over time has portrayed bellydancing directly or indirectly as a prelude to the sheik or harem owner's sexual appetites realized, with one or more women in that harem. Its not right and I commend you on posting Sabreena.
Hi Sabreena! it's Chin Eng here, To me, I always think that bellydance is an art and passion, I'm not sure do you agree on this, but I always believe every performance is an art. Even like, singers, actors, and even stage actors, they always think that performance is always their passion.
You & I have had this discussion before through email, so I'll try not to duplicate my efforts too much. Art being what it is, affects all people in a unique & powerful way. Some people will interpret it with reverence & fascination, while others don't understand the message at all. All a person can really do is hope to make their dance transcend into a spiritual, magical event that far outshines people's preoccupation with procreation. I've understood your intent since day 1. It's art!
Dance is one way in which you communicate, and like Bandler says, The meaning of communication is the response you get. To many of your viewers, what you do is sexy too. It seems like a positive byproduct of your passionate talent and glowing femininity.
I also happen to think you're quite attractive in your natural state.
There IS sex in bellydance. It is ANCIENT. it was around (not in the same form as now) well before the reserved and repressing religions came in. Dance was about celebrating life - and life includes, sex, death, birth, fertility etc. Yes, there are sides of the dance which are not very desirable as a performer, but this dance is sensual. Men will look at a womans body moving in a sensual way and see sex - but they will also see skill and talent and art. Sex is not bad or shameful.
Dance is something that usually attract men if your trying to or not...it's kind of a natural law.
If you are sensual this will show(my video's show my & sensuality my personality) Today there are some in turkey bellydancing topless and historically in this art form were tribes such as the Ouled Nail who left nothing to the imagination it was done sexually that makes it no less art. Personally i think if it's not vulgar done in good taste, true representation or expression of you its fine.
Great video post. Way to take a stand and let your beliefs be known. Hopefully this will save you unwanted trouble in your future.
Anybody who cannot recognize your natural talent, hard work, and beauty is blind.
You made a good point when you stated that Dance "is no longer respected" has become "cheap entertainment" in today's world, especially in younger countries. That is Very True and Very Sad.
Oh yeah by the way, as just what you said on your video, there's so many misunderstanding about what other people say about bellydance, I bet it's really hurt. I just don't understand why is it so. But anyway, I'm totally respect of what you do, and what is right and wrong, there's the most important part.
I really respect you for insisting on staying true to your own ideals, and to what your art means to you. Still, it seems to me that the problem is not with sexuality, the problem is with treating sexuality as though it is vulgar, demeaning, cheap, or shameful -- or as a tool to be used for selling things. But those negative things are NOT inherent to sexuality. I think sexuality itself can be absolutely beautiful, divine, and sacred.
dryootoob - so right. Sex and sexuality IS so beautiful and sacred - it is looking through conservative religious eyes that we see it as a bad thing and something to be ashamed of. Back in pagan days sex was revered and worshipped becuase it resulted in new life - and this is why dancers were revered too!
I agree.. why should we be ashamed of our sexuality.. i certainly am not because its part of the make up of me.. sexuality is Beautiful sacred, spiritual and art as long as it is treated with the respect it deserves and without vulagarity no one should fear it.. its a part of life!! show it some respect revere it and be proud of it.. if you choose to be glamourous or choose to dress down.. people who are attracted will still find it sensual or sexual.. it comes with the dance i am afraid.
Yes, i agree - however, it is frustrating if you look at 'britains got talent' where two years running now they've had bellydancers - and it was made very clear by the judges that it was a sexy strip tease for them. Which it is not. They cheapened it. Which is not surprising as it makes good telly for the ignorant. Its such a new art in its present form of stage craft (since the orientalist movement), that I reckon we'll see alot of changes to the public perception of it too.
I think moderation is the key word here. Just because some belly dancers "sex up" their routines in order to gain attention is no reason to take the exact opposite extreme and completely neuter the dance.
If you had a time machine and took a trip through history recording a first-hand documentary on the non-sexual origins of bellydance, it would do no more to sway modern opinions than it would if a nudist had a time machine and took a trip through history recording a first-hand documentary of the non-sexual origins of nudity. The meaning and significance of things changes with the culture over time. You can't just look at the history and ignore the modern context.
It is very sad. I feel the way you feel. They dont know the tradition behind it...Dance is just a strong artform like any other, art, modern art, opera. I wish people respect that
It seems as if your Pitta Dosha is out of balance - u mentioned acne and other issues. Look up Ayurvedic remedies for Pitta imbalance and change your diet and routine accordingly. that acne should reduce in a month or so. good luck.
Sabreena, you are, without a doubt, one of, if not the best bellydancer on You Tube! I totally agree with what you say about the overt sexualizing of bellydancing. Though there is much that is sensual about the dance, it is sensual in a beautiful way. I hate to see it linked with stripping and being done for sexual titillation. Stay true to yourself and your art form, I'd hate to see you change in any way!
If you check out my clips you will see that I post them when I look my worst. This is for 2 reasons. Firstly, it is the art form which counts NOT the tons of makeup etc..Also when I dace somewhere I can never normally find someone I trust to operate my recorder!
But you will see in my clips that they are USUALLY always the first rough draft. In my latest clip, gypsy bellydance , even my braids are not complete because I am more interested in getting the dance together
What u say was kind of cute...braids half done. It shows where ur focus is. I think what u say is right. Dance should be no.1, the rest just secondary. Then only we would pay due respect to the most controversial artform
I want to thank you for making this video, and that I agree with you 100 percent. It is quite frustrating having to correct people all the time about bellydance. I also agree with you about the makeup, I also have bad skin, but I don't want to put on tons of makeup just to dance in my house, I usually just make the vid farther away, I don't feel the focus should be there anyways. If I do come across some of the more ignorant types, then I will send them to your video to educate them. Thanks!
Thank u cassie. I felt that its time we stand firm. There are too many people exploiting young women who bellydance for the most noble reasons! They try to stereotype us and market us as strippers! Thanks so much for the support
As a man , I think belly dancing is a beautiful and sensual dance .i like to see dancer rolling hips and belly ,arms and legs moves ,beautiful face & smile . but every woman in the wolrd knows her body turns us crazy , above all hips rolling . there's a little pleasure watching you dancing , but that do not goes beyond . the worst belly dancing is the turkish & lebanese one , dancers are using too much surgeon (breast implant) and cover a few their body , that is bad
you are amazing when your belly dancing and you shouldn't change yourself because of anybody comments . just keep doing what you have been doing and nobody is gonna be picture perfect so they should get over their self
Glad you are speaking out about this. You shouldn't have to sacrifice your energy and talent to satisfy those who see bellydancing as cheap entertainment. Keep on doing what you do. I enjoy watching you just as you are.
belly dancing is beautiful, mediative for the dancer, i feel so alive when i dance.
now looking at you dance i have gone into trans, it hypnotic. at times i think u are absolutly beautiful to look at too ,not in a sexual way but like when u see a beautiful bird or flower and shock by their wonder. i guess some people could mix that up for sex.
don't change anything about youself you are prefect, hair ,face ,body and spirit that always comes thro in your dance.
I know what you feel. I've had a lot of replies on my videos from males making sexual remarks saying to wear less clothing and everything else, and I can't do that! I started dancing because I thought it was beautiful, the music is beautiful, it makes me feel beautiful and have more confidence whether or not I'm wearing a pair of sweat pants and a shirt. I've written a paper on tings like this and I really hope more people realize what you, your viewers, and i already know. ty for the vid HUGS!!
i love this because its true belly dance is nothing bad nor does it have anything to do with sex when i was little i never knew people saw it that way i agree it can be sensual or sexy at times but its not sex its like a stripper lol belly dance is about expressing yourself but i dnt believe you should express yourself sexually in public lol
well its all depends on the dancer ok not the dance because i've seen some bellydancers on here that wore Skippy outfits and allmost next to nothing!? believe me yes and i've seen then all on here as well as movies so i somewhat agree with what u said but i feel it depends on the female just like all of those dance shows of the eighties. women on those shows dance sexually as well as a little raunchy. u should know that really .lol
I agree with you! The belly dance club at my college had an etiquette workshop that metioned this and how people consider bellydance as acting like a stripper would call the dancers whores, sluts, etc. It's really sad.
WAY TO GO SABREENA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I associate myself with this completely!!!! And being a drummer, I've seen it firsthand. THANK YOU for standing up and letting your beliefs be known!!!!!!!!!!!
i love the way u think about respecting belly dance! bless you!
keep it up! and dont worry it doesnt matter what you look like what matters is the person who you are inside and believe me you are a good person who knows how to move! xx
Great video! I agree, it is frustrating how people try to sexualize everything, especially cultural dances. I took a bellydance class at school this semester but didn't tell my parents because so many Western people equate it with stripping. When I search for African dance videos here, a lot of videos can be found that just focus on the women's rear ends and those videos get a lot more views than the ones that actually focus on dancing. It's pathetic. Not everything is about sex.
However I also think the emotion and passion depicted in any dance and often also in singing, but much more when you use your entire body - that is not something bad. It is something wonderful and should not be judged negatively, particularly not when it happens to be performed by a woman.
So not all sexuality is wrong I want to say - it can be empowering and very beautiful. Also the worship of Goddesses and the divine/holy - that very often worships goddess of love, fertility etc..
I agree that bellydance should not be about sex, but about musical interpretation, emotion, love, loss, passion etc essentially.
Now in the depiction of passion, yearning, lost love, sadness etc there is the sensual, the physical, and sexuality. but so is in ballet or in the opera - that is all about love and passion and love gone wrong etc. So i take it you are talking about sexuality as cheap entertainment, a sell out of female bodies above all. THAT is wrong and not b.d.
I agree - stick to your guns! My belly dance teacher insists that it was originally a dance by women for women, as a celebration of us. As a UK dancer I second what you say - no sexualizing a beautiful art form just for men.
Respected mam, forget all & just remember this-you are a GOOD dancer BUT you have to become a GREAT dancer...you may have 100 critics but you have 1000 fans like me...BUT its wrong to say that you always dance for yourself...remember Psychology Journal...there you dance for project...lol...take care...god bless you
Genieshanu I think you are a great instructor. I luv ur vids, I'm trying to learn how to belly dance and ur vids really do help. No need to worry about what others say, you continue what u do cuz you are good at it. =] Peace
AND I just want to say how much I appreciate you sticking to your guns. You are the ONE AND ONLY bellydancer that doesn't use it as a sex tool. I think it is a dance to appreciate the full flexibility of a woman's body no matter what size she is.
You don't brag or show too much flesh, you are not anorexic. You set a great example!
Thanks alot! I really appreciate what you wrote. Its something that people misunderstand all over the world, because of how the industry and media portrays dance. It hurts to hear an outsider advise you to "sell" yourself better
dead right you are. SO why do you dance. If you are not dancing for the attention for others then why do you dance... i ask out of interest? You say "bellydance is magic" what is the magic if it is not the power of attraction? I want to understand, not to challenge :)

H1703 2 years ago

You don't see ballerinas performing in restaurants, and belly dance shouldn't be different.

bELLY DANCE CAN BE KINKY if you want to make it so, what i saying is if dance about passion how she can be sensual passionate dance with out the sexuality sensuality and so on this dance is about those thing , she and the shanu join ballet then it is better for them. you have to be a really woman and connect with sensuality to acheive the best result from this type of a dance, maybe it is american culture make evoryone like " oh my god... that too sexy " So prude and stupid non passion
Theluvtodance 2 years ago
First I want to say that I really admire you for putting your foot down and saying "NO, I will not change my art for you." As you say, lots of dancers get caught up in that, and it's very sad. While I agree with you on most of your points, I find your demand to keep sex entirely out of Belly Dance unreasonable. If I, as I am a belly dancer too, want to dance from a place of sexuality or sensuality, I don't want to be belittled for that, as it is my choice to express it through my dance.
EvilSmirk 2 years ago 2
I also want to say that that sexuality should be expressed from within, with your energy and (Non-vulgar) dance moves, and even flirtatious facial expressions, NOT with overly revealing costumes, or vulgar movement. Belly dance can be sensual and sexual, if the dancer chooses to do so, but Belly dance is NOT stripping (Which is an art form of its own). Keep standing up for yourself, and keep your art what YOU want it to be.
EvilSmirk 2 years ago
As a male I deeply respect the ancient art of belly dance along with its many historical, cultural and even spiritual undertones. Having said that, may I at this time also say...BOOOOINNNG!!!!!

Its not right and I commend you on posting Sabreena.

yceng 2 years ago
You & I have had this discussion before through email, so I'll try not to duplicate my efforts too much. Art being what it is, affects all people in a unique & powerful way. Some people will interpret it with reverence & fascination, while others don't understand the message at all. All a person can really do is hope to make their dance transcend into a spiritual, magical event that far outshines people's preoccupation with procreation. I've understood your intent since day 1. It's art!
marquisdeceasd 2 years ago
Dance is one way in which you communicate, and like Bandler says, The meaning of communication is the response you get. To many of your viewers, what you do is sexy too. It seems like a positive byproduct of your passionate talent and glowing femininity.
I also happen to think you're quite attractive in your natural state.
areyouserial 2 years ago
There IS sex in bellydance. It is ANCIENT. it was around (not in the same form as now) well before the reserved and repressing religions came in. Dance was about celebrating life - and life includes, sex, death, birth, fertility etc. Yes, there are sides of the dance which are not very desirable as a performer, but this dance is sensual. Men will look at a womans body moving in a sensual way and see sex - but they will also see skill and talent and art. Sex is not bad or shameful.
alittlebitofperil 2 years ago
I dont get it
vorogaythovozaven 2 years ago
Dance is something that usually attract men if your trying to or not...it's kind of a natural law.
If you are sensual this will show(my video's show my & sensuality my personality) Today there are some in turkey bellydancing topless and historically in this art form were tribes such as the Ouled Nail who left nothing to the imagination it was done sexually that makes it no less art. Personally i think if it's not vulgar done in good taste, true representation or expression of you its fine.

Anybody who cannot recognize your natural talent, hard work, and beauty is blind.
You made a good point when you stated that Dance "is no longer respected" has become "cheap entertainment" in today's world, especially in younger countries. That is Very True and Very Sad.

Back in pagan days sex was revered and worshipped becuase it resulted in new life - and this is why dancers were revered too!
alittlebitofperil 2 years ago
I agree.. why should we be ashamed of our sexuality.. i certainly am not because its part of the make up of me.. sexuality is Beautiful sacred, spiritual and art as long as it is treated with the respect it deserves and without vulagarity no one should fear it.. its a part of life!! show it some respect revere it and be proud of it.. if you choose to be glamourous or choose to dress down.. people who are attracted will still find it sensual or sexual.. it comes with the dance i am afraid.
Innovativebellydance 2 years ago 3
Yes, i agree - however, it is frustrating if you look at 'britains got talent' where two years running now they've had bellydancers - and it was made very clear by the judges that it was a sexy strip tease for them. Which it is not. They cheapened it. Which is not surprising as it makes good telly for the ignorant. Its such a new art in its present form of stage craft (since the orientalist movement), that I reckon we'll see alot of changes to the public perception of it too.
alittlebitofperil 2 years ago
I think moderation is the key word here. Just because some belly dancers "sex up" their routines in order to gain attention is no reason to take the exact opposite extreme and completely neuter the dance.
thx291 2 years ago
If you had a time machine and took a trip through history recording a first-hand documentary on the non-sexual origins of bellydance, it would do no more to sway modern opinions than it would if a nudist had a time machine and took a trip through history recording a first-hand documentary of the non-sexual origins of nudity. The meaning and significance of things changes with the culture over time. You can't just look at the history and ignore the modern context.

I agree with you totally!
In my latest clip, gypsy bellydance , even my braids are not complete because I am more interested in getting the dance together
juliablanche 2 years ago

Thanks!

As a man , I think belly dancing is a beautiful and sensual dance .i like to see dancer rolling hips and belly ,arms and legs moves ,beautiful face & smile . but every woman in the wolrd knows her body turns us crazy , above all hips rolling . there's a little pleasure watching you dancing , but that do not goes beyond . the worst belly dancing is the turkish & lebanese one , dancers are using too much surgeon (breast implant) and cover a few their body , that is bad

now looking at you dance i have gone into trans, it hypnotic. at times i think u are absolutly beautiful to look at too ,not in a sexual way but like when u see a beautiful bird or flower and shock by their wonder. i guess some people could mix that up for sex.
don't change anything about youself you are prefect, hair ,face ,body and spirit that always comes thro in your dance.

Also the worship of Goddesses and the divine/holy - that very often worships goddess of love, fertility etc..
dinavienna 2 years ago
Thats a very interesting take on it sister. Thank yu!
genieshanu 2 years ago
Much respect, sister!
