  • The biggest irony is that most teenage metalheads are virgins XD

  • At least the host can see through their bullshit too.

  • That guy looks like a fat Josh Homme.

  • There's something really masturbatory about those two stooges in the studio patting each other on the back constantly.

  • These guys would shit the bed if they heard music today.

  • these fuckers are driving me fucking crazy!DONT TALK OVER PEOPLE

  • sad sad! He's CUTTING THROUGH BRAINS OF BUTTER.fuck the 80's

  • You have to give it to the host who called the two suits to task while giving due credence to Zappa's points which, as someone said here, were "the hot knife of reason cutting thru the butter that is the bullshit coming out of theses guys' mouths"

  • Funny how the guy with the 70's porno mustache is preaching morality to Frank and the fat ass who never had sex is pissed off about anything that is....you guessed it.........sexual.

  • holy fuck those people are fucking stupid. Bill O Reilly stupid. Frank is a genius, the DK never got any exposure on the MTV...

    so much BS

  • Frank Zappa is talking to people that let worlds have power over them and he can't understand that cause he is to powerful to let anything or anyone control his mind

    i love this guy !

  • @demented669 "let words" not "worlds"

  • any parent knows that if you forbid a child from something, the child will crave what the parent is withholding

  • The whole labeling thing was an epic fail. Those records just seemed that much cooler to a kid.

  • PMRC = Pigs. Pigs that lost. HA-HAA!

  • haha those two fuckers are twats

  • If a song came out promoting condom use the religious censors would be just as against it, as is the pope. The religious moral arbiters want to pretend that humans don't have a sexual drive until they are married, and suppress sex up until then, which just creates a nation of guilty deviants. We used to live to be 30 in harsh conditions, so we become sexual at 13, 14, they cannot stop this natural process and only being more open about how serious sex and pregnancy is will lead kids toward resp.

  • 6:57

  • Just like Marijuana is a gateway drug - Frank Zappa was a gateway to NWA and the other garbage that has come to the market since Zappa - look at our society - music has to take some ownership - its awful.

  • @TommyC503 You're trying too hard.

  • @madamimadamimadam What does that mean?

  • @TommyC503 It means you're making illogical connections for the sake of starting an argument; anyone claiming Zappa was the downfall of music because he lead directly to NWA and "garbage" can only be trying to bait an argument.

Unless you honestly feel that way, in which case I feel very sorry for you.

  • @madamimadamimadam First of all, I dont give a rats ass if you feel sorry for me, not like me or any other feeling that you have. Secondly - I never said he was "the downfall of music." Read. I think he is a liberal - like you - you are the downfall of society.

  • @TommyC503 For someone who claims not to care how I feel about them, you certainly have strong opinions regarding a person you've never met (i.e. me).

  • @TommyC503

Frank Zappa is a self proclaimed conservative. Watch the other Crossfire video with him. He stands for the 1st Amendment and the constitution.

  • @TommyC503 I hope you realize that you are using a classic "slippery slope" argument. It's not very strong at all.

  • @darkalleyheroes no slippery argument - truth.

  • Music about necrophilia and bestiality? AIDS? Frank should have told that it wasn't him that fucked that monkey and ate him for dinner....

  • One thing i hate more than douchebags is stupid douchebags.

  • I'm cool with rating systems; they're simply indicators. Don't mix the AIDS, satanism and perversion of western society though....With the ratings, you have an idea of what you buy; if you're weary of taboos, leave it on the shelf...that's democratic.

  • These guys are pissed 'cause they never get any. Not very popular with the girls are they?

  • Frank was right. The original PMRC was nothing but a bunch of elitist housewives connected with senator husbands and nothing to do.

  • It's one thing to have the ingredients of food, or nutritional information, printed on menus and on food packages. That's science-based and directly affects the consumer who ingests it in fairly straight forward ways. But music is an art form, and that labelling approach doesn't work here. If they wanted parents (and children) to have a preview of what's in the records, they could consult a reviewer, critic, or someone else qualified to interpret music, literature, and art properly.

  • when will music create such controversy on a wide scale again? this is the coolest thing to watch. now our big question is bieber or lady gaga. so, lame. wheres the fuck you in music now?

  • @loudfastrulez can you say fuck you to money so easily? some not..

  • @wewothebigicipator im just saying music should be controversial. even dizzy gillespie said that music should push people forward rather than making them just happy.

  • The fellow in the big glasses seems pretty cool.

  • @Stopfollowingme646 He is very fair to both sides of the issue. :-)

  • Even though Zappa used the argument that, most lyrics are about love so why does everybody not love each other, before it is still one of the most poignant ideas that I ever heard him say and will stick with me forever.

  • maybe these guys should be concerned about when their congressmen send teenagers to die in foreign countries, that certainly is a good reason for suicide... And they should take off millions of tons of literature just in case a kid drops by and decides to pick Lolita or Justine or some other book like that...

  • Sorry...i ment SONG`s.

And for all who love to love:TITTIE´S n´BEER.

I´ll have to take one Jonny Cash ...

  • Why not doing that:For every sexual word in a song we must listen to one or to gospel-...maybe country-...Song.

That would clean our souls and as a second effect it would help the country n gospel industrie.

    AMEN

  • yay I liked #400

  • Not enough Zappa in this interview

  • Personally i find on objection to a rating system.

  • a guy called elvis presley was censored by only fillming above his hips...

  • These guys are probably shitting their pants because of the music today.

  • Hold on a minute... MTV used to play music?

  • Michael Kinsley is a great dude. He sees their bullshit.

  • Frank has my full support... Pitty that I wasn't around there 20 years ago.

  • Zappa is the only one here who is here on PRINCIPLE, the rest of these guys LOVE being on tv, Zappa is there because he HAS to be there.

  • haha he never heard of the dead kennedys

  • We have an a-hole on the air here in Cincy that spews the same moral crap on one hand, then uses potty mouth on the other.

  • I remember when Elvis hit the scene. Politicians, parents and law enforcement were on tv saying "this nigger music will destroy our country." It just goes to show that there have been idiots in every generation for decades. Long live rock and roll.

  • Moral regulations have always been, and will continue to be, terrible failures. Opinions should be based on facts, not the other way around.

  • One more thing about Mr. Ling. He didn't have ANY stats to back up his drivel---and this is how his makes his ca$h. What a TOTALLY worthless asshole.

  • Jeff Ling, like Jack-off Valenti, is a worthless asshole making money the only way he can---being a huckster selling snake oil. Fuck you, Ling--ya piece of shit.

  • @ebkurd Actually I know him personally and that's not how he makes his money so back off will ya. And stop insulting people because you have nothing better to do.

  • @HeatherJ315 I don't care if he's your dad, the MPAA or whatever it is is a worthless job that accomplishes absolutely nothing. It's worse than a being a parasite. It creates nothing and only forces some asshole's morality down peoples throats. He on the same level as a Jerry Falwell or Jimmy Swaggart. Worthless.

  • Frank Zappa was the most eloquent voice for freedom of expression that America could produce in the modern age. He is missed.

  • This debate is still raging in 2010....no government in my home, my bed,

    my body........period.

  • "They do get the point across a lot faster than you guys are doing over there."

    Zappa, you are the man.

  • He never heard of Dead Kennedys? What a newfag.

  • the dead Kennedys are punk not metal. this guy needs to learn what he's talking about.

  • @lowrider55593 the dickhead probably never heard anything other than the crap he heard in baptist church

  • they should censor the crossfire song

  • Now they call it "education". What will it be tomorrrow? Censorship, regulation of free speech? How far? What will be considered good, and who makes that decision? If there was ever a slippery slope, it is issues like this which infringe upon the natural rights of everyone eventually.

  • The media was afraid and still is afraid of Jello Biafra or he would have been on here too.

  • zappa in a talkshow and one where they mentioning dead kennedys? how cool!

  • @BigKahuna93 I agree, John Lofton is fat annoying fuck xD

  • At least Jeff Ling is a better debater on the topic than John Lofton from the previous segment. He's wrong, but he presents a better case.

  • Unless they specifically singled out the two dumbest guys at the PMRC, this interview alone could serve as a pristine example as to just how corrupt the organization was.

  • "Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe." - FZ

  • Dead Kennedy's!!!!!!

  • when did andy richter become such a dink

  • I like this host. He actually challenges both parties' arguments. Unlike some of the others who were automatically on the PMRC side.

  • It's Brutal! >8D

  • I like the host ^_^ cause he's polite, but he actually is listening to reason, and challenging those two about their claims.

  • I love how he just sits back and lets these morons spew their rhetoric, then he just comes in, drops and few bombs of reason, then quietly watches the opposition go into a frenzy. He was a brilliant man, and a genius musician.

  • This program is just stupid. You cannot confront morons with Frank Zappa.

    I miss you man!

  • That Bob Saget looking guy's being pretty reasonable ;)

  • I'm so glad the PMRC didnt ever get it's way.

  • All I can say is...what the fuck? Rock music is the reason people have AIDS? No...sorry people have AIDS because they're irresponsible.

  • Amazingly, after they got their Label Requirement...The record sales Soared!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • facepalm at 7:50

  • frank is a hot knife of reason cutting through the butter that is the bullshit coming out of these guy's mouths

  • @revhogun: wonderfully spoken, my compliments

  • @revhogun beautiful image my friend

  • thanks frank for for being the voice of reason amidst a flurry of morons like these guys

  • He is saying that to physically silence people like him is treating the symptoms not the problem. The problem is that we have no power as a society. Hitler used words to create the belief that jews were evil. He is being disengenious. To say it is just words is wrong. The other thing is, there is no sex without violence. They are extremely close, in fact, in nature, sex is just the conclusion of he violence. To promote sex and sexual openness is to promote the disintegration of society.

  • lol There was more to German antisemitism than Hitler's speeches, it wasn't just words. Also, Hitler used violence more than he used words.

Your stuff about sex and violence makes no sense. I can only assume that you have some issues with sex in your own life.

  • Good lord, no. Like an iron bar, really.

  • @dieselheart1 You are having some, really, really big problems with sex and words, my friend...

  • I have listened to Zappa's music all my life, more the commercial stuff than the hardcore avant garde. He is a musical genius in my opinion, but I must say that he being disengenious. But we cannot single out particular instances of obscenities. People like Zappa are merely taking advantage of our childrens understandable lack of respect for us. They are only vulnerable to the influence of strangers because they believe that the society we have created is not worthy of respect.

  • @dieselheart1 Not really. He thinks cencership is wrong and it is. He defends everyone's right to express themselves. He's not trying to take advantage of anyone and couldn't care less if anyone listened to his music.

  • oh, i laughed so hard, when he connected teen pregnancy or AIDS with rock music. how sick...

also frank zappa is cool, but sometimes he had to say something...one short one minute monologue to unmask this hypocritical old guys.

  • You get a better sense of what the man was about in Frank Zappa on Larry King Live Part 1 August 13, 1985

  • @OnceAPunAThyme

good interview, indeed. i liked his reference to the trombone glissando being forbidden at one time.

  • Frank was his own worst enemy, here; he appears pompous where really he is at a point beyond exasperation that anyone should be giving oxygen to the sticking plaster distraction of throwing money at censoring pop lyrics, where he would rather be discussing solutions to society's ills with educated grown ups.

  • he put on a good show but all the other guys thought he was a joke - they didn't give him any credibility. frank, that's not how you persuade people.

  • NIGGER!!!!!....was that offensive? I'm sorry, but the same rules apply today. Words are words and it is interpretation alone that determines human action/reaction.

  • @Teajryan you should say "black brother"

  • @Teajryan

And the context. Carlin hit one out of the ballpark with his skit on language/thought....

  • the liars defeat themselves with their own hypocrisy and ignorance. their agenda is apparent... control... they lost then... they will lose again... they will never win. the pmrc is evil... hitler in a priest's robe. religious scum.

  • Comment removed

  • hi nightfevers-censorship is a very blunt tool-u dont change opinions and encourage freedom of thought -let alone freedom of speech through censorship-i condone censorship but as a last resort and used very sparingly-i dont support political correctness-its very undemocratic for one thing and secondly it stifles debate.... secondly i love the v/u and im not a zappaphile-but frank was an excellent guitarist, very good and prolific song writer and far more successful and more intelligent than lou

  • prt 2....to nightfevers-hi again lol -u r very subjective and not making a valid point when u say franks lyrics are dangerous but lous lyrics arent-lou glorified drugs like heroin-frank is very outspoken against drug-use-he hated pot and especially hard drugs like heroin-lou wrote and sung numerous songs glorifyiing drugs-and prostitution and sado machism and more besides-im not judging lou-like i said- i love the v/u-as for lou-his opinions are simply that-lets be objective dont just quote lou

  • Zappa owned those douchebags.

  • When will this argument ever get old. I am sick of hearing it. But i am thirsty for as much Zappa as i can get. I'm completely stoned, i'm hippy and i'm trippy, i'm a gypsy on my own.

  • What's interesting about all of this is that the PMRC & modern "concerned" organizations are the ones that put so much weight on this allegedly "bad" lyrics. Left alone, none of these "lyrics" carry any weight -- they are just words, like Zappa said. But when you start isolating certain types of music, putting labels on them, then you make the lyrics more influential AND more desirable by rebellious children.

  • I was just talking about this with my older brother the other day. He told me that when he was kid(late '80s/early '90s)he would actively seek out the albums with parental warning labels because "that's how [he] knew they were good."

  • I like how the one guy kept on saying "3000 children getting pregnant a day is new." It's funny, considering that teen pregnancy rates in the US have consistently dropped since their high in the 1950s.

  • The end result of this was that the records that got labelled sold more. Some people never learn.

  • Right around :30 the guy on the left got to the heart of the matter. He might as well have said "Wait a minute! You're a lying, hypocritical piece of shit who wants to push your own moral agenda on the rest of society aren't you?" I think that's the kind of statement Frank would have preferred, and he's right, it would have gotten the point across ALOT faster!

  • Exactly! Amen....

  • Personally, I'm actually concerned about music that promotes STUPIDITY, which is mainly christian rock.

  • WOW How can anybody be so dumb. ANY publicity is good publicity. If a kid goes into a store and sees a CD without a label beside one with a WARNING a kid that wnats to rebel against their parents (which most teens do ) which one are they go to pick? I listened to heavy metal as a teen but I haven't killed anyone.

  • i agree - hip hop, rap, etc the MOBO has far more hard hitting lyrics regarding sexual violence, rape, sado-masochism, violence and drugs than heavy metal ever did

  • NO. la cara de nerd del de anteojitos supera lo imaginable.

  • Imagine the evolution if you will of how Hip-Hop has used words.

  • The original PMRC protagonists were the Gore family. They have always been into grandstanding. Al Gore now spends his time lecturing others on so-called climate change, while using up huge amounts of the earth's resources himself. Parasite and hypocrite.

  • Mmmmm, no. Go away.

  • Hmmmm, yes. Get some facts.

  • Yep. Plus his son is a drug addict loser. Look up Al gore son and watch the clips. I guess Tipper should have been looking after her own instead of predicting the downfall of others. They lost as parents. They need to just go away.

  • Man, the last video the fat guy seemed all right, now he's talking out his ass.

  • awesome stuff. and the guy in the glasses looks like harold ramis to boot. haha. GO FRANK!

  • Jeff Ling and the PMRC are BOTH so full of $&#% that they stink. and the same for WMC!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Exactly. The problem is the obsurd level of hypocracy present in big companies, when they tried to put a warning on these albums with words that were 'offensive' they simply sold better. These are the poeple who apparently support the right of free speech saying that people can't say certain words. They're just trying to control people a little more underhanded-ly. They give people the right to agree, not the right of free speech. The people who want to censor or blot out records are just facist

  • The PMRC is just a big group of asswipes that don't give a damn about the families and what they hear. I believe that records with anything "offensive" in the lyrics should just have a warning. if you want to listen to it you should have the right to, and zappa couldn't be more spot on. They're just words people! What are you getting so worked up about?! You don't have to freaking OBEY the musician and do as you are told! they are just expressing themselves! don't be such a-holes about it!

  • If this guy was so worried about kids contracting Aids, a more constructive way to safeguard them would be to create better sex education and condom dispensing programs in schools. That said, the over sexification of pre-teens is getting a out of hand. The real criminals here are the child-marketers who target and bombard kids the moment they're out of the womb. Kids should be able to play in nature and make their own fun and imaginary games, not be "educated" to find their fun from consumerism.

  • YES! Thats exactly right. Now, that is not what Frank's point was, but its close enough and probably what some of his number 1 problems with society today would be.

  • DK Heavy Metal? lol

  • People must be liable for their own decisions.

  • my parents never bought me music.

  • my parents bought me music. I still remember the day my mom came home from work with Master of puppets. Great stuff

  • The PMRC stated what they were all about as soon as they tried to link music to AIDS.

  • The invasive nature of EVERY group like the PMRC is to keep the public docile and uninformed. Our government DOESN'T WANT us to make choices for ourselves. These guys actually made remarks about "COUNTERCULTURE" being bad. The fact that they can be so stupidly passionate about this crap proves that they have no lives outside of their cloistered little worlds. Frank was a brilliant musician, but also a thinker. His ability to express himself without having a hissy fit is commendable. RIP FZ!

  • zappa's responses were calm, collected and delivered with eloquence as always.

"What do you make of a society that is so primitive that it clings to the belief that certain words in its language are so powerful that they could corrupt you the moment you hear them?" - the man himself

  • Explicit lyrics causes and spreads AIDS - they guy is such a damn child.

  • It is impossible to establish a causal correlation between musical taste and sexual activity. Even if every person that listened to heavy metal contracted an STD, how could you demonstrate that it was the lyrics from their album collection that caused their behavior? Their musical taste might be incidental to their sexual activity.

  • LOL, you obviously never had a good band that "set the mood."

  • * I disagree with Mr. Zappa. I believe music can influence behavior. But so can literature, lectures, speeches, sermons,commercials,... I think someone who screws up their own and / or someone else's life would likely do it with or without a favorite song. My favorite song is Ship Ahoy.

    * Many people think Zappa's music was just a bunch of crazy lyrics. Most was anything but crazy. Some of his music seemed so complicated and he played guitar with such speed and flair.

  • nightfevers: He had lyrics dealing with loose-moral women as well, but it was a satire. He was simply taking the piss. And that's the reason people listen to it. They don't want to be whores, they like making fun of them.

If there are some kids that are so stupid they are likely to act on a few lyrics, they definitely won't like Franks music. It's at many places so dissonant, that they couldn't listen to it.

  • What power of his own music on kids?? Which kid have you seen listen to a fusion of atonal, 20th century classical, jazz, minimalist and rock?? Which kids could understand the music of Weasels Ripped My Flesh?? Or any album?? Moreoever, people do like those filthy lyrics Frank had written, yes. But they are meant to be satirical, he wasn't being serious. And Frank's fans know it. So what wrong influence could it have??

  • lol.

  • you're an idiot

  • Notice how everybody except Zappa looks fucking lame.

  • You ignorant fucking cunt. Do you have any idea just how stupid what you just said was?

    Fucker.

  • you're a cunt

  • ...Wow, you'll love John Lofton.

And this whole argument is baseless, it essentially states that the youth of America, then and today, are weak-minded morons with no hope who need their hand held under the guidance of government and "adults" with a higher moral code. I, for one, do not need anyone to tell me what is right or wrong, or demand that I not listen or look at a certain genre/video, whatever type of media available. That is censorship and fascism.

  • And America was degraded long before any "Rock" musician came here. In fact, music has nothing to do with what a person does, or acts. And Frank's music is probably way deeper than any of what you listen to. You just looked on the shallow surface and saw satirical lyrics. His music is way deeper than that, and I'm glad it went over your head. Good day.

  • F*%K THE PMRC!

  • 6:14 -6:15 - man, don't you just wanna shove a big cock up jeff fatass lang's bovine throat

  • The real point is... or WAS, at the time... to label this stuff, it would have to be pulled off the air. BACK THEN, radio play was huge. It would've destroyed any artist who wanted to express anything sexual or violent. Sex and violence go all the way back to the Bible, which these morons beat (along with their wives and cocks) "all day and all night and all afternoon."

  • frank zappa won this arguement when he inserted the 99.9% love songs

  • 99.9 % love songs! ;)

  • Yep, Zappa forced himself upon me. You can't escape Zappa, I'm such a victim, every where I went there was zappa everywhere, brain washing me.

I heard word of mouth there was some hilarious songs I needed to hear, and that's what they are. I sought them out, it wasn't forced upon me.

You don't like that people are making decisions you disagree with, and you're a piece of shit. Vote away what you don't like you intolerant prick.

  • you're taking that line out of context you f-u-c-k-i-n idiot !!

  • just one word for you...no; two: ignorant idiot

  • god your a fucking dumbass

  • Learn how to read and then write to me you loser.

  • @nightfevers

    lol troll

  • with EDUCATION, kids old enough to expose themselves to this material are intelligent enough to make informed decisions.

Sadly, it appears a lot of parents keep young people in the dark and uneducated on things that scare them, rather than confronting them head-on.

Being a parent comes with responsibilities.

  • just creepy little losers with zero intelligence and massive

    frustration

  • PMRC Jeff Ling = putz

  • Pathetic

    Morons

    Ridiculously

    Corporated

  • I think Jeff Ling is on Pat Robertson's payroll, has a double life chasing down young boys through Craigslist, and bends over so Tipper Gore can yang him in his ling-ling with her plastic vibra-toy with a XXX NRSC rating on it

  • @Kompozitur How dare you say that! You should be ashamed of yourself! I know him personally and you're just making up things about people for the heck of it. And seriously have some respect! Why bring sex into the picture? Don't be such a pervert talking about vibrators and stuff. What's wrong with you?

  • Ahhhh ... the Reagan years. Pinch-assed Republicans scare America with visions of debauchery via music. They've been scaring the public ever since. And, despite their "efforts", music has only gotten more profane (gangta rap) and meaningless.

On the flip side, while these bozos were prattling on about morals, Ronald Reagan - due to his paranoid anti-commie hysteria - was funding a bloody war that resulted ion the deaths of 18,000Nicaraguans. There's your morality for you. Hypocrites.
