Great video. I love every bit of what you said, and I do understand what you mean by her using falsetto when she sings at Eb5 and E, rather than full chest belt but as you said because the song itself so unique to mainstream entertainment that her doing that gives it enough of a pop feel to give people's ears the ability to handle hearing the song. That's how it works. At least for this song. But yes, it would have been more powerful the way you explain your pov. Again, great video.
@Jayy630 Hey! Thanks so much for your feedback. This session is not a "bad critique" on Beyonce. In my work on the Celebrity Vocal Tips, I strip songs down so we can see everything. The only "constructive critique" I gave Beyonce was on the starting key she chose to maximize her full-vocal-forte moments. Other than that, I'm glad and even thankful that she's one of the few who are aware and willing to perform theory and seldom-used techniques. =)
this video was awesome! It explained a lot of things to me about this song that I couldnt just ask anyone...ya know. Like what is it about this song that makes it sound all 70s like? Why does this song make Beyonce seem like a different singer? etc..and u answered them all and gave insight to other things that I never thought about
So, I am totally loving that you did this song. I don't think that the song would've been as effective if the song started in a lower key. I think it would changed the entire dynamic of the song.
Hi Erik! Love ur videos! When I first heard this song I immediately thought of Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5..then I was listening to the Jackson 5's "Maybe Tomorrow" and I heard the modulations within that song..Beyonce was def inspired by gospel as well as the Jackson 5! So glad she brought it to our generation! Can't get enuff of this song!!!

You know someone who laughed at this? Oh man, this is one of the most impressive tracks on that record. It's actually my favourite. However, I think it was still nice for her to slip head voice into this song.
omg u hit the nail on the head... the first time i heard love on top i was like yooo bey doin some church stuff (speakin in the style of it!) i loved it
Ha! Erik, you go 'head and KILT, not killed, but KILT @6:10, even though you were just showing what she does in E, u KILT! LOL. Very valid points about distinct styles and runs. I enjoyed this video!
It's the best thing on that CD. It could have been the song of the summer. Why it wasn't the first single, I don't understand. I've played it about 400 times.
Her mix (you refer to it as false) is perfectly blended to my ear. For me, it holds up the way a full belt would.
Also, I have other Bey songs from the album "4" that I want you to teach on technique if you have the chance: I Care and End of Time.

So why are we 'critiquing' Beyonce so much when she's the only one in mainstream who is, actually, who can sing in this style? :|
