Shortly after these performances Mirella dropped Leonora from her active repertoire. She was supposed to sing it at the Lyric the following year, but gave the company ample notice to find a replacement. Grace Bumbry sang it instead.

What happened on the 6th bar of the 3/4 bit on the word "Ernani"? Where is the vocalise? I think Mutti is doing a great job as always, no nonsense conducting and a brilliant musician, giving her lots of time for her to hid her difficulties with the role, like the repetition of the phrase "Un eden" towards the end. She, well, that is an other story.... the aria is not very well and the cabaletta is rather terrible, to many notes are simply missing, to many.... Lovely voice, but....Verdi is not!

Mirella Freni has a beautiful and solid Verdi technique. I've always enjoyed her Verdi roles - her Violetta and Elisabetta in Don Carlo are terrific. This was great to watch although I believe Leontyne Price has a better voice and style that is perfect for this role. Ernani may not be entirely right for Freni's voice, but she does better than any soprano who would sing this today.

Totally wrong for her. Muti does nothing but accent the zoom pa pa aspect of Verdi. He's a hack!

Terrible. Mirella Freni is suffering, technique very good of course but MUTI is a KILLER! Orchestra sounds like a German Panzer  in the II World War...

What a treat this was! Thank you for posting. I sang with her in four different productions, more than 90 performances. I never once saw her lose her temper or say anything unkind to anyone in the chorus or on stage. She was class personified. She is a petite woman but managed some incredible vocal production. I hope she's having a lovely retirement. She is in my memory museum forever -- and on YouTube!
