Vai, by a long shot. Don't get me wrong, Satch is a nice guy, and a great guitar player, but Vai has a personal demon chasing him on that guitar. The intensity with which Vai attacks the guitar, from the ground up, is unmatched. Satch is good on technique, and clearly talented, but the rage is what separates Vai. Not to mention, he's mastered the instrument so thoroughly inside and out he's clearly bored with it. I choose passion, any day. Satch is having a good time and Vai is a lunatic.

Joe has more music knowledge and understands the emotion in music much much more...Vai is just a tech wizard who worries more about his performance than what the listeners want to hear.. Flying in a blue dream and souls of distortion blow anything away that Vai has done. Joe has tone that is unmatched...and dont forget Vai is where he is because of Joe.

Vai definitely sounds better than Satriani, however, I can feel so much emotion in Satriani's pieces which Vai only is to produce in certain songs. Yes, Vai, in my opinion, is the better guitarist(like how he composed the orchestra part(completely) and his guitar solo for "For the love of God", but I don't know Satriani is just insane. So in my opinion Satch>Vai but REMEMBER: Satriani taught Vai how to play the guitar.

It really seems that Satriani is the only virtuoso out there that actually tries to create music...as opposed to boring and endless soloing that goes nowhere. While Vai, and Malmsteen, and the others play, "can you top this"...it is just an aimless show of technique. Hurts the ears. I would rather listen to Joe and SRV's MUSIC, than listen to others try show hard how great they are and produce nothing (and they are great, don't get me wrong), and no, I am not putting SRV in their class.

One could argue easily that Vai had better technique than Satriani, even before he took lessons from Satriani. My message was not intended to be a shot of any of these guitar masters, I was only pointing out it was Satriani's ability to make great music, with virtuosity, attracted other guitar gods to have him teach them.
