  • That looks so painful, what is it for?

  • @XXXPEACEXXX7

to check my bone marrow for presence/absence of cancer (leukemia)

  • @csmcd oh alright i see, im interested in this because i saw a video of a girl that's dying and it had something to do with the bone marrow she said she is looking for a match or she might die in less than 2 months.

  • @XXXPEACEXXX7 that's sad. She's looking for a transplant. I hope she finds a match.

  • @csmcd Yea same here thanks a lot.

  • I just had it today. I don't know about others' experience but for me... the pain is only about 4 / 10. It's not much worse than blood drawing. After the procedure, I even asked the nurse "Was this really done to me?" I guess it depends on the person. My experience is much better than average.

  • i got one of those in my hip bone those r a bitchh!!!

  • Holy Christ that looks painful men

  • I did this procedure last week. It was hard to breathe because of the intense pain. Now wait for the results.

  • your so brave got mine next week live in UK

  • @6plus1 hope it went okay

  • I live in Australia......and the first time i had it done, 1 and 1/2 years ago didnt get midazolam, just a local jab.......worst pain i've ever felt....and i've got quite a few piercings and tattoos. I recently had a 2nd one done at xmas time, had midazolam and local but the midaz didnt do shit......still felt the whole thing. Its the most brutal procedure,,,,,if i have to go back for a 3rd ever, i'l be demanding a general anaesthetic.

  • @slayeraus Man I wish they'd have given me some midazolam! Just read up on it and it sounds good. I just had the local. After my 3rd time it got a lot easier. By the 6th time it was sort of old hat. In any case, good luck!

  • @slayeraus LOL... Ive had Leukemia 3 times and 2 bone marrow transplants ...Lets just say I lost count on how many of these I have had, I actually have little bumps from scar tissue back there on both sides . All of mine done under local anesthetic . The Dr. actually broke the drill while twisting it in once. Trust me ...the more you have , the worse they get.

  • What was first the Biopsy or Aspiration?

  • I just did this a few hours ago and I'm amazed at how calm you were!

  • @omamage

Sadly, the calm comes from practice.

  • holy shit i never knew thats what they were doing i was always facing the opposite way but in Australia they give you a ton of medazalan i think its called makes you really drowsy and of course local anesthetic

  • @RicoshetSC

yeah that's why I had my wife shoot the video. I figured if I knew what was happening it might make it easier for me to "stay with the pain", so to speak.

  • i just had this done today 3/25/2011 and wow and i would say on the scale, a 10.

  • @curranbon

Hope you are okay. The first time was definitely the worst. It gets easier.

  • @curranbon Sorry you had to go through this. The first time is the worst. Hope everything is okay.

  • @curranbon

The first time is the worst. Hope you are okay.

  • You handle this a heck of a lot better than I do! I was diagnosed with A.L.L. in March 2009. I've had like 15 of these stupid things and every time I cry my head off! This is by far the worst part of having cancer. Super proud of you for not screaming like I do!

  • @KatieHaile Thanks for the kind words. I'm 3yrs in remission from AML. If I'm lucky, and remain healthy, I should never have to have one of these procedures again. Never is too soon! Good luck to you.

  • How could ANYONE get this done while awake???!!! This seems to be exremely BARBARIC to do while awake. YIKES!!!

  • @miskaffon I think most adults who need this test are awake when it's done. It does seem primitive. I sometimes describe it as "human carpentry".

  • hopefully the results of the test show that you don't have leukemia. If you do, I'm very sorry. If it's acute the treatment will probably be intense and probably will entail high doses of chemotherapy. Possibly a stem cell/bone marrow transplant, depending on the sub-type, your prior health status, age, predilection of your doctors, etc. Good luck!

  • Just had this procedure last friday and now my back is still sore. I will get the result after 2 weeks? It's that possible that i have cancer? I have 90 of the symptoms but until now i can't believe that this is happening to me. I have 2 small kids that they need me all the time. If i have a cancer how long the treatment, what are the procedures and how the body will cope up during that treatment. Any information that will help me I'm greatly appreciated...Thanks a lot!

  • Just try to relax. Wear headphones and listen to music. Focus on your breathing. Bring a tennis ball to squeeze. The procedure won't take long. Soreness after but not too bad. Unfortunately, the 1st time is the worst because of all the anxiety you go through in anticipation. Hopefully, the results will show that you don't have leukemia and you won't ever have to do it again. I've had this done 10x in the last 2.5yrs. But I'm in remission from acute myelogenous leukemia. Good luck!

  • Last question I promise. When your doing the test is there any tips for it to hurt less?I'm still a little freaked out. I hope that all of this comes out negative, but if it doesn't, I'll have to find courage somewhere. Anyway thank you again.

  • Thank you so much for answering my question! I'm just a little worried about the test results now more than the actual testing. I guess that their testing for leukemia. Anyway I'll get through the test. I'm going in on Friday. Thank you again.

  • it hurts in the beginning mainly, when they inject the lidocaine to numb the area and the bone. Unfortunately, I think that most people rank this experience as a 10 out of 10 (or close to it) in terms of overall discomfort. Get a sedative in advance. Good luck.

  • Please help! I'm fourteen and have to get one of these done! On a scale of 1-10 how bad does it hurt, and what's the worst part and why?

  • Just signed up for the Marrow donation registery through Be the Match 6 days ago. This looks pretty painful, but I bet it hurts alot worse to die from cancer. It'll be worth all the pain. Can't wait to help save someone!!!

  • @Rhythm28Child. That's great. It's such an easy way to safe a life. If you are matched and they have to retrieve your marrow via aspiration (and they might not; they may just need to retrieve cells from your blood in which case the process is like giving blood) they'll probably put you to sleep. When they harvest a sizable amount of marrow that's what they do. Best of luck and if you are matched please let me know.

  • 1:30 whats with teh screw driving into the hip?

  • @EllismoreCA That is the Aspiration needle.

  • Not looking forward to tomorrow, but my girlfriend needs this....

  • when i had this done i was asleep!

  • Hi csmcd...im going to get a bone marrow aspiration & biopsy for the 1st time and i'd be lying if i said i wasn't nervous one bit, but i am. I just would like to how this feels and could you work the next day with no problems, also when siting.?

  • @emiluv06

It's not pleasant. The first time might be the worst because of the nerves. Maybe your doctor can give you some oxycodone or something to relax a bit before the procedure? I've generally been fine to work the next day although sitting can be uncomfortable at times. The area will probably be sore for a day or 2. Icing it helps. Good luck.

  • @csmcd Thank you for repling, i'll see how it goes. Hope your doing well, and best to you.

  • iv'e gone weak in the knees lol, i deffiantly want to donate my bone marrow thou!

  • Tough to watch and I've had 15 of these. One here in Georgia, all others at M.D. Anderson. Coming up on 4 years since diagnosed with lymphoma.

  • @tullymars1961

I'm in NY but MD Anderson does some of the genetic testing on the marrow.

4yrs......it's such a strange thing to consider living for 3yrs, 4yrs or 5yrs post as "successful" outcomes. I was 2 months shy of 40 when I got hit. Not exactly what I expected for my "midlife crisis". Now if I live to be 45 I'm a success story. My son will be 15. How can this be?

I'm running the NYC marathon in Nov to raise funds for LLS.

  • @csmcd I was diagnosed At age 17 with leukemia (ALL) back in 1983 the protocol was 3 years of chemo. After this I was ok for 5 years and relapsed and was sent for a bone marrow transplant . Fast forward another 6 years and I relapsed once again and did another transplant ..that was 12 years ago. I am alive but at a cost ...Osteoporosis, avascular necrosis, cateracts, from all of the prednisone so my hip has been replaced and my pituitary gland is fried, I with chonic pain and fatigue.

  • @GWARCUM sounds like the road you've traveled has been quite rough at times. My sympathies. I'm 2.5yrs into remission after 18months of chemo (no transplant). Fortune is an odd thing. Am I lucky? Unlucky? The answer is "yes". All the best to you.

  • @csmcd .... I've seen a guy pull the I.V. line out of his arm and say "enough!" ...I never understood how someone could do that untill now. So being lucky only goes as far as your quality of life in this situation. Stay healthy my friend!

  • @GWARCUM God bless you my friend. I can't imagine. I can only wish you better health and days of happiness.

  • god bless, you're very strong man.

  • @goodzi1990sa thanks!

  • I had one 15 years ago when the doctor thought I had Leukemia, but I didn't. What they found out is that I have lupus, and I was having a flare. Today, I got my third kidney biopsy because of the Lupus. Oh, well!

  • MDS patient here.So far so good.Undergone aspirations and trephines as well.

    Cheers fellas!Be strong!

  • @arissss1962

I'm in remission from AML. 2yrs in. Feeling good. Hang tough.

  • @csmcd God bless pal! What else can i say and wish.

By the way the medic here.

  • @FedOhannesian

AML is the cause for my bone marrows aspiration/biopsies as well. I'll have #11 done in August. I've been in complete remission for 2+yrs.

    Good Luck!

  • You handled this a lot better than I did. I swore several time. If I ever have to get this done again *knocks on wood* I'm gonna get really wasted before I go.

Novocaine and nothing else isn't nearly enough for this procedure, imo. I'd rather have a tooth pulled than feel what I felt last week during mine.

  • position of pt will doing BMA is wrong it should semiprone/lateral

  • my friends baby is having this done tomorrow. im not sure if they do it different on a child or not. i really hate cancer!!!

  • @brooksie0504 me too

  • My 1 year old daughter is having this done tomorrow :(

  • @zkulptor How is she doing now?

  • @manhosa13

Thanks for asking she turned out negative, thank heaven!

  • @zkulptor Congratulations! God bless your baby and your family! :)

  • How long is the aspiration needle on average? Anybody know? And God bless you for going through that.

  • poor dude

  • OUCH! Never in my life...

  • I had this done too... Worst pain ever, I wish there was some sort of alternative. You know?

  • Try it in the sternum!!!! 1 there. 1 biopsy pelvic and 11 pelvic aspirations and go in june for another. They all feel the same. Sternum was awful!!!!!!

  • I thought Dr. was trying to start a fire under your skin with bone friction...

  • that's funny

  • Oh no・・・・

  • owch poor u i would run before they got started

  • YA i had to do the same thing with out deadening talk about pain took 6 nurses to hold me down...

  • Auuu

  • OUCH!
