A great pull, without doubt. But I think just as big an advert for the tyres used, which were set at very low pressure to maximise grip. Farmers probably wouldn't run their tyres like this unless doing work on boggy ground. I'd like to see the same pull with tyre pressure set to normal, where the wrinkling at the bottom wouldn't appear. Maybe these old girls are so torquey that it wouldn't make a huge difference. A fine video. Greetings from NZ.
We have a 830 with the front weights, wheel weights, and the tires are loaded it weighed roughly 20,000 pounds! we took it to a tractor pull and it pulled 33,204 pounds!
Doesn't a longer chain make it harder to pull? A short chain would pull more weight down on the tractor giving it better traction also it helps lift up on the skid pan making it easier to move because of less drag..
The shorter chain gives the tractor better traction. So instead of slipping the tires and keeping the engine running, the tires would hook up and gut the engine.
The chain is short enough when you have to bump the wheelie bars against the pan of the sled to be close enough to hook the chain up.
Love those old JD diesel twins. They'd pull right down to where you could count the teeth on the flywheel gear as they passed by (if you have the cover off, of course), and then pull some more!
Wow those 830's are unbelievable! I pulled my 70 D against one last saturday & and it did the same thing this one did,it went plum out the gate! He got first place ,I got second!
He could have taken rhat shed home if he wanted....

My favourite JD two cylinder model is the 830!
I am an "International Harvester" guy but I love antique tractors of any brand
The original JD R had some problems, the 80 was an improvement , the 820 was very good and the 830 was excellent!
Then JD stopped making two cylinder tractors!
Regards from Australia
The 830 is now popular with collect

Thats John Deere Torque rise!

If the tractor were hooked to a normal length chain (48-52" or so) it wouldnt seem so strong. Pulling from that long of chain is a joke!

Never pulled the engine down at all. needs more traction.

JD should of kept making the 2 cyl along with the new 4 cylinders at leat til the 70's

The engine sounded like it was barely working, but it was putting a lot of torque to those tires.

I llike the bite that 830 had on the track, and it's bark sounded nice too. Very nice tractor.

I think that thing would pull hell up by the roots if you could find a strong enough chain
