i think the reason the dominoes don't fall is because the ones that did fall symbolized L's contribution to the case and how he was just about to catch Kira, and the part that didn't fall were the things that Near had not yet contributed to the Kira case in order to solve it.

I think it's possible for BB to be there~ Near was having a flashback, so there would be younger versions of them. If Near was born in 1991 and BB started the murders at 2002, there is a time gap in which is BB still in the orphanage. During that time, the conversation with L and the children takes place; later, the present Near talks about L's death, which should be year 2004. x3 I can be completely wrong though; it's just my theory.

@Wildnose Believe you're right. There's two spots he makes a cameo. When Light's talking to the kids in front of the TV he's standing in the background and of course there's the spot pointed out where he's walking away from the camera.

The BB cases were told in part by Mello and Mello says he met BB, so it's highly possible that Near also met BB. It fits. Cameo FTW.

This is a painfully honest speech of L's greatest fear, isolation from the rest of humanity. He never formed a natural empathy for the basic of human emotions and is only able to grasp them logically. The lies he tells are his attempt to hide the truth, that he, similar to other geniuses, are in their own isolated world. What makes his analysis sad is that L understands that the truth will remain the same,that he is a monster, but still tries not to be.

While in the strict timeline of DN, it would be impossible for BB to be in Wammy's House at this time, it is entirely possible (IMO) that he was placed in this scene as a sort of easter egg for anyone who knows about him. So, I think everyone's right: no, he shouldn't be there, he should be in jail...BUT because of the overwhelming similarity in his design to L's, it's hard to believe that he's anyone else. :)

I love the symbolism in this scene. L speaks of monsters when of course he's really talking about people like himself Near and Mello. They are selfish, childish people. In the Japanese dub, L literally uses the word "Ghost", which is why we see one of Near's toys is a ghost. I imagine the meaning is this: two lines of dominoes represent L and Near. Near is white. The "ghost" is what L reached and what Near is trying to obtain, because "selfish" is what a detective needs. But Near's track derails
