The Engineers definitely got the evenings off lol
FRA rules consist of a paid vacation day if involved in a collision with an auto. If the collision is fatal there are investigations filed and the Engineer has paid vacation and covered councelling costs.
why? trains are about the safest forms of transpotation. the chances of a train getting into a wreck are slim. there are more fatal car accendents then train accendents.
I wish we could have all trains, including freight trains, haul in butt through town like that...assuming there are no tight curves. With all that momentum you could save tones of diesel fuel & get the cargo or people to a destination sooner.
Ever seen the brakes on an Amtrak train? They have 2 enormous disk brakes(rotor brakes) per axle. Yes they are rotor brakes & not the type that push a brake shoe against the wheel. I have seen some Amtrak trains equip with both.
The 2nd train probably saw the first train hit the van and had time to apply emergency brakes. Yeah it still hit the van, but at least not at top speed.
There is a stop right after this intersection so it wasn't going as fast as the first train, plus the first train was on the main line, whereas the second one was just the commuter metra which doesn't go as fast
The fire is most likely gasoline and oil from what was left of the van. It is somewhat comical that the first train took the van away and the second train brought it back.
i was there when it happened the guy guy was drunk luckily for him he was out of his car my dad's car was on the other side of the tracks and i was held up to boy scout meet
Welcome to "Times when hitting something twice is overkill" Seriously though, you see video of a car getting hit once by a train, but twice ? That thing must have looked like the metal equivalent of a twizzler both in size and shape.
dude, i totally drive thru hinsdale every freekin day and the one damn day i dont, some crazy awesome crap happens like this! no one was hurt so that makes this an "ok to be funny" situation.
for me, the funny part is that the tail of the last wagon of the second train stops exactly at the spot where the van was hit by the first train. there must be something underneath those tracks right there.
