The poverty we speak of existing in places like the US and the UK is poverty relative to the average income/standard of living of the country overall. It means you can't afford an ipod and wear second hand clothes and get food assistance. But that kind of poverty doesn't compare to third world conditions.

There's a high number of homeless children in the UK, and some that even though they have homes on the counsil, can't afford beds or food. There are extreme cases of poverty in the UK and US, even if it isn't as harsh as the conditions as those in third world countries. This doesn't mean, however, that children in the UK/US should be overlooked when choosing to adopt.
