If relicing is so bad, Fender wouldn't have a number of guitars at different price points. This is a great video that shows you safely how to do it yourself. A relic guitar has a different vibe and is as important to how you play a guitar as colour or any other aesthetic. Sometimes the feel of a guitar or the vibe makes you play different. Or it just looks cool.
Don't know why the relic haters watch this video if they hate reliced guitars (or anything related to 'em). I play the type of music i like and I watch only the videos that I like. I dont go n watch videos about stuff I hate and start leaving negative comments so that i can force other people to like what I like. Imho, i think that's just stupid.. dont u think?
@dustinkirk: Just another look???!! I hope you don't work on guitars professionally. The finish is not just eye candy. It has a functional purpose in maintaining the integrity of the wood/metal. Damage it and you compromise the wood/metal. The part will fail prematurely.
This is really stupid. Its like deciding to become a meth addict because you think it's trendy.
@tomomifishy your a douche nozzle... the wood is fine kept under the proper humidity... they make plenty of acoustics with no paint or finish they are just polished they survive just fine with proper humidity. fender custom shop wouldn't be selling them for 5 grand if the wood was compromised
@tomomifishy You're comparing prematurely aging a guitar with damaging your health by taking highly dangerous drugs?
Aging wood won't compromise anything. Have you seen 1950's Telecasters? The body isn't falling apart. And the metal parts are not likely to fail anytime soon just because some of the plating is missing.
Do you think the Eric Clapton cared about how his guitar looked? I think he was/is more concerned with how well he played the bloody thing....and kids wear some eye protection....
for all the people bitching these are good techniques for the person who buys a vintage guitar that is missing some parts so if you can't afford to buy the original hardware so you buy new hardware and make it look original that is the purpose, but if you want to make a new guitar look old yes its really dumb
there is not a single designer jeans label that doesn't use distressing (relic-ing) as STANDARD practice!! and they're up to 10 times more expensive than a new pair you buy at the GAP... so everyone just shut the fuck up and go buy a new guitar and play it for 50 years, and buy a new pair a jeans and wear them for 50 years and be a dick about it for 50 years :)
If you custom ordered a guitar, there would be several finish / hardware options. This is simply just another option, no one is saying "now you can tell people your a baddass", it's just a different look. P.S... I hate relicing, but I'm not a dick head that needs to hate on youtube to feel like a baddass.
The truth is, nobody is going to believe you didn't relic your guitar like this. That's why I don't get it, it's not like you can fool anyone with the 'I found this in the garbage. Under the sea.' look, so why bother. IMHO it cheapens the guitar because it's trying to be something it's not. But anyways, to those who like it, enjoy it. Nothing wrong with it and it comes down to personal preference. No reason to get into youtube fights. (Funny as they are to watch..)
The bottom line is everybody is different. Some will like it some won't. People buy aged kitchen cabinets, end tables, dinner tables.....ect. It's all what sells and if people are buying then good for them. I'm on the fence, I guess I'd like to "relic" it myself but on the other hand, you can worry about playing and not about denting your guitar. I'll bet if someone paid you to do this to their guitar you'd be more than happy to take their money.
@ixtlan8 your right i had a old white les paul that after a few years was yellow from bars and smoke ,,, it sounded great but i didnt notice the yellowing until i did a big clean up and saw the original white under the pick guard ,,,, i never worried about its looks just its sound
i don't know but i beat the shit out of my guitar i take it to well were haven't ive taken it to without a case and it still looks nice ive been doing that for about 8 years in al the pubs the thing smells like beer and a car has even driven over it (by accident) gasoline is poured over it and the only thing it has is a little bit colored and a few chips out of the fwood but that's it I love ibanez
@AustinSeals some of us arent in a band that gigs every weekend, and some of us cant afford those 1000 dollars relic guitars or the 900 dollar road worn series guitars
@AustinSeals dude its just a question of taste.... i dont go around saying plain colour guitars are pathetic an that sunburst is the way to go... some people like fenders, some like gibson... some like shiny new guitars some like them old and scratched... and you can still play the hell out of it and it will still age. if you dont like it... well, its not your guitar anyway...
@AustinSeals In concept, I agree with you. A guitar gains its love and relic finish with age, but the problem is with Fender's Poly finishes, they don't age. They just sit around and look brand new even after decades of love and use.
@AustinSeals This is useful for me being a guitar repair guy, when screws and metal parts have to be replaced on vintage guitars... so that the new hardware looks like it matches.
A guy I know who relics guitars also threw the metal parts with a bunch of nuts and screws into a tupperware container and threw it in the dryer. That doesnt give rust but it wears off the shine and gives the guitar and awesome old look.
rust relicing looks retarted..if you actually CARED about your guitar theres no way it would get rust like that!

point taken.
You really don't have to be playing in a band all the time though.
Just play the shit out of your guitar, and eventually there'll be a story behind it.
