Hey SS, you should definitely get Xak I.II for the Pc-Engine. I recommend it to Ys fans, and it should only set like 10 bucks or so (including shipping). Good buy. The Japanese language is not an issue, because like Ys books, the objectives are not complex. Also, there is a guide on gamefaqs. GO for it man.
One of the best RPGS in Turbo. Unfortunately Japan got all the cool shit back in the day, especially role playing games. I was trying to learn Japanese in order to play such PCE J-RPG classics as LEGEND OF XANADU 1 & 2, TENGAI MAKYOU: KABUKI DEN, ANEARTH FANTASY STORIES, EMERALD DRAGON etc. But i gave up, it was too damn complicated. I did beat Xanadu 1 with walkthrough, and i honestly believe it would have been a bigger hit than Ys, If it had been released in the USA. Damn you NEC!
lol another great review. dude you crack me up. Yeah I saw a wii review and he just chewed this game out. does he think its frikkin halo. this game was ground breaking. I jumped from nintendo to this. people have to know about these games to appreciate them I feel. great job and lol they sould "shut the fuck up!!!" lol
Actually I never bought the base system...I traded some nintendo or sega games with someone for it...then later I bought the cd attachment for 3-4 hundred dollars. So the grand total was in fact 5-6 hundred dollars ,very spendy indeed. Anyway YS is and always will be highly memorable.
Did you not start with I and II? Oppenheimer says it in the intro. In fact, it's the first word he says and the first word spoken in th egame at all :) And all the characters that speak say it Eas (because ease has more of a hold on the S, more like a Z. Think Yeast, without the Y and the T :D ).
A little interesting note on the name Ys. It actually comes from Breton (British) folklore. Ys was a mythical city that sunk into the ocean, very similar to the Atlantis legend. The story of the city's rise and fall are a bit different to it's Greek counterpart.
Another interesting fact: Paris in old Breton means "Similar to Ys".
That's a cool fact. I guess a lot of these role playing games are based on several legends to help the programmers find a engaging storyline for fans.
Makes me wonder if they intentionally used the Ys myth, because in a lot of the later games their are references to lands called Afroca and the Romun Empire. And a reference to Europe, but I can't remember how they spelled it.
I believe so, may have been mention in five, but I'm not sure. I've only played I and II, and III for TGFX and VI for PS2. Everything else I had to read on Wiki. And I think some over eager fans are making assumptions about characters in the games not translated to English, cause I think they've said ther were Romun's in IV and V. But yes, VI was the first time I heard of any blatant European references.
LOL, this shit was cutting edge back then. I paid about 400.00 for the CD player. Still a bad idea for 1990 if you figure in inflation I paid about 10,000. I must have amazed at least 100 people with this thing from 1990-1995 :)
And youre right the music and cinematic cuts were quite godly
Well, I took your advice and downloaded this game on my Wii. I don't regret it one bit. I'll admit, I was quite skeptic and I never played a Ys game before, but I see the appeal. The graphics are about as old-school as they can get, but the production values are pretty damned impressive (for the time) and the music is nice. The game is a lot more fun that I expected too.

@123doomdoom Damn, I wish someone would translate these JRPG's one of these days cause I curious about them too.
starsoldier1 1 year ago
The pronunciation? I'm hearing it as "Yees".
I've heard something about this game being technically Thomas Haden Church's debut (not that I care).

@Palmerholic Cool, wasn't he in Spiderman 3?

If someone asked me what would I rather play on a desserted island; FF7 or Ys, I would take Ys.
ccpickre 2 years ago
Both are great but I have a soft spot for Y's here too.

I'm sure you've been told this before, but it's pronounced "ease," not "wise." Simple mistake, I didn't know my first time either.
DemonicBliss 3 years ago
I already knew that but I'm guessing you haven't seen the whole review yet.

I can believe that. There are tons of great CD titles for the Turbo here like Syd Mead's Terraforming and Y's III.
starsoldier1 3 years ago
Oh yeah, like I said the game is still incredible.

The Romun Empire is in Y's VI, right?

Definitely, the Turbografx-16 CD at least got the ball rolling for the industry especially with an amazing game like this.
starsoldier1 3 years ago
That "T7" is katakana which means iisu, which is the japanese pronounciation of Ys.
Duker89 3 years ago
Ummm... I knew that.
starsoldier1 3 years ago
Why refer to it as T7 then?
Duker89 3 years ago
Because that's what it looks like.
starsoldier1 3 years ago
Did Turbo CD really cost THAT much at the time?
atomofish 3 years ago
Yup, afraid so. Up here in Canada at least.

I'm a big RPG nut too, I wanna play this now, lol
Waferlawrence 3 years ago 2
Umm its pronounced "ease" not whys. It says it on the intro. Also, "T7" is actually Japanese for "Ys"
jpvarga5 3 years ago 2
No, the game is exactly pronounced "That RPG with the naked chick holding a ball game" and the T-7 is one of the Terminators.... I guess.
