Makhno defeated 15,000 White army troops at Peregonovka with only 3,000 peasant soldiers. It was the biggest and most important battle of the russian civil war, and it turned the tide against the counter revolutionaries. Less than 100 whites survived the battle.
Fought off the fascist austro/hungarians single handedly, then defended themselves during the Russian civil war; as the Bolsheviks would not stray too far from the trains. The Soviet Union would not allow him to freely fedrate with autonomy.... bad precedent, but may have been or seemed necessary given the massive external attempts to crush the revolution.
