Islam is inherently political. The only difference is that recently there is a resurgence in imperialist ambitions (establishing a Caliphate), and in anti-imperialist violent resistance movements (Hamas etc.). All of this is accompanied by a push for establishing Sharia law, since these are religious movements after all.
