  • Its Probbly Desiccant to keep the hard drive dry from humidity.

  • mine has that too, it also makes a weird clicking sound when i boot up and try to install vista onto it

  • it has silica gel inside mate thats why it makes that sound

  • dude wtf iv got one of those for me little bros and its the 160gb one but its so slow and it just hangs for ages crap

  • well i have a 250gb ahrdrive filled with soem extremely important shit that is making a liek hihg pitch bepp sound or soemtign if its dad ima be pissed

  • @Si3z3 I guess high pitch beep should be treated with much carefulness

  • that sounds like shattered glass platters to me. i had that happen to a laptop drive.

  • but if it stays without moving will it make that sound?? cuz ur not gonna be moving it all the time while suing ur computer, are you?

  • @diegoseichon ofc it won't. I just noticed there was 'something inside' when I was installing it, therefore I made this video in which I shake it just to let people hear what I am talking about. But when it is still, no sound of course!

And by today it is still working good! (famous last words :P )

  • I have one that works just fine! I just ordered a second, planning on going RAID. Kind of wished I got a more expensive hard drive at the time, but oh well.

  • @Xxreaper008 I had on RAID for a couple of days, it is damn fast, u won't regret more expensive HDs!

  • ahah that HDD sucks. I have a 320 gb Caviar Blue and it crashes and blue screens all the time. Il run a game, and then all of a sudden it will say physical dump or something; and blue screen? Anyone know how to help?

  • @PatVRulz buy new one:P

  • If you break open a newer HDD there is sand like granules inside them.

  • really? do you have pictures? In which part of the hdd are stored these granules?

btw, after weeks of relationship with WD Support, they ended that the WD3200AAKS (one platter version, two platters hasn't got this problem) it's normal that have this rumour; btw they refused to explain me by what was caused!

hence your contribute is very precious!!

  • I have no idea where they were inside it. It was a 4 year old Seagate 7200.7 drive. they were small and clear, and not too many of them.

  • hahahahaha

  • i have this sound too.. in a seagate barracuda drive or something ... it sounds like sand when turned off but when is spinning it does not make any sound but the one from the rotor... i am freaking out... damn!

  • I have the same thing!

    WD 160GB Caviar SE

I sent one in that would not boot no matter what. Sent it in under warranty and I get the same one with sand effects! It works well otherwise. I wonder if its damage from shipping. Its bullshit though I'm also alarmed and better not loose my data because of this shit!

  • thank you for your contribution!!

yeah, mine too is working good; Icontacted WD and one of the guy told me to make an RMA; I just hope they wont' laugh at my hd when they receive it, cos afterall it's working..

I really dunno what to do..

  • No problem, I'm glad you posted this video or I would have been alone!

Did they tell you what the sound means? Maybe a broken part? I ran chkdsk and WD Diagnostics and both say the drive is OK. Im gonna call and see what they tell me.

  • for me it's the same!!

no, they didn't tell me nothing..anyway, I think people answering to technical support aren't the best engineer out there, but just guys that do Customer Service. Thay may have answers to most common technical problems, but for strangest one I doubt...

they just told me "There shouldn't be a sound like sand running through your hard drive"...

me too, every test is fine an the hd is working fine, I underlined this to Tech Support!

Have a try and lemme now!

  • of course!

if you notice no wires are plugged! :D

  • you'll kill it when you shake it like that while it's running ;D
