@globalcentralline Yes this 4- Car preserved unit is the same as the ones which run on the Isle of Wight. The one in this video is preserved as it looked when in service with London Transport in the 1950s
The seats were so much more comfortable - luxurious compared to say the current "toytown" Central Line stock, for example. Travel by tube used to be so much more pleasant, and a lot cooler because they used to switch off the carriage lights when leaving tunnels. Who on earth approves the modern designs?
I agree that the seats were more comfortable but as for it ever being pleasant underground I seem to remember in the days of the 38 stock you were allowed to smoke .. and that made them pretty disgusting to sit in!
Way, way better than the 1995 stock. Progress doesn't always mean travelling in an over lighted carriage that has no style. The 1995 stock unfortunately has no style and is well over lit!
it's nice seeing these 1938 tube stock in preservation especially on the northern line sadly it was on the former great northern and city branch that one of these trains was involved in the Moorgate crash of 1975 sadly also to this day the cause remains a mystery
I remember that disaster all too well. They never found the cause of the disaster the Driver appeared to accelerate the train into the blind tunnel for no apparent reason. The matter was made worse by the tunnels being of standard mainline height which made the tube cars ride up over each other.
Listen to the spur-cut bull and pinion gears moaning and groaning, such music! And the original cast-glass shovel-type light shades have been re-fitted. The old girl's in beautiful shape.
She is indeed in good shape. I had the chance to have a good nose round her last Saturday at the "Depot" open day in acton where she is housed. I would love to see the 4 car Q stock train they have there restored too
Thank you.. I must admit at first I did feel a bit of a wally waving my camera about on a tube train full of people but then it dawned on me that we were all on it because we wanted to be so what the hell!
... and the Tick, Tick, Tick of the camshaft controllers and the "pop" of the line breaker in Oval Station. Proper control in my book none of this microchip rubbish you get now that throws you to the floor when it accelerates!
absolutely!, nothing beats the tick tick tick of a pcm unit under the floor, better still NO SONIA!!!!, i wonder if they had the old sequence indicator light lit up when they notched up the full on postion, i imagine so, as in my youth i used to play around with the LTM cut away 1938 cab section which you could notch up the nearby PCM unit which was suspended in a clear display case, its a real shame that the cravens heritage group have not given the same restoration to the 4 car 1962 unit.
Is it A or D that's the guard's end?

I remember on the '72 stock in the 70s one could smoke in the first carriage.....or was it first two carriages???
295route 1 year ago
@295route The smoking carriages in the days just before they banned it were the trailer cars. Usually two per train
