I loved Derek St. Holmes voice always. And I have listened to Ted since 1972 with the Amboy Dukes. He had me during his earlier days with Derek singing, but when he started to sing on his own, he lost me. He isn't a singer. He is the ultimate guitar master. But the dude does not have a great voice. Derek does. Just had to say what I have wanted to say for many, many, years. Love Ted. Just love Dereks voice way better.
Derek can STILL sing. Saw Ted 3 times in the late 70's. Derek was only with him on one of the tours and it was BY FAR the best of the three shows I saw.
@yourtubesteak It's Byrdland , and there's plenty of sustain, it just doesn't transfer well to youtube................... go to a concert - you''ll hear it, he's been playin' PRS for years and years...........
Ted is the purest guitar player I have ever seen and heard. I have been seeing him since about 1980, and he is STILL incredible. I may not agree with everything he says or does, but you know what, it's America and he is doing just fine by being honest and himself. I'm sure he would not agree with everything I say and do, but he would go shooting with me anytime I am sure of that. Rock on Ted, see you soon!
Just goes to show that PRS guitars have no tone. Over wound pickups, and a body like a brick. Ted, get out the hollowbody Gibson, and quit screwing around!
@mageedis Tone ? are you kidding me....... dude go to a concert and hear it live...... Ted would never play something that has no tone........ in a live setting these PRS singgggg, he's been playing them for years, right along side the Byrdlands................. right on.
@TheGrafted1 . You have your opinion, but I have played them before. Paul Reed Smith used to work on my guitars before he got famous. He is local. We had a shitload of PRS guitars all over the neighborhood, before Ted or Santana ever played one. They are just Les Paul clones, that some may be a bit fancier, but don't play as nice.I can hear a song on the radio, and tell if it is a Gibson, Fender, or even a Gretsch, but a PRS? Nahhh! Kramer? Jackson? Asian? Something with a D'Marzio Distortion.
@daveontrak That's only if you disagree with him. I happen to be on the same political side as Uncle Ted so he's top notch musically and politically in my book. Ever wonder why Bill Mahr no longer talks politics with Ted......not even in the same intellectual stratosphere.
I dont care if there are better guitarist, most of them cannot write classic after classic song. I will remember Cat Scratch Fever over any Satriani, Vai, Friedman, Malmsteen tune! He's up there there w the best cause he writes, sings, composes and plays awesome guitar. He's in that Billy Gibbons, SRV , Clapton group
About 1996.Ted took my son to see a Matalaca Show In Detroit When Ted Had His Own Radio Z-Rock Show. My son called In to the Station told SuperTed how One of the Tikets got Lost. Steve Black came to trhe House Picked Up my son took Him to Z-Rock Radio. My son was In the Studio During the James-Ted Interview .Then It was Off to Sound Check + Chow+ Hang out with Uncle Ted an the Matalaca Band. There was Never a Time for me to say Thank You TED NUGENT. Ted and Derek Is Gas and Fire
I saw Derek play this alone this summer & he was amazing !!!! I love Ted ,too, and have seen him in concern,as well, but Derek seems to own this song !!!! He did the best version, ever, live and I was proud to witness it
All the people at that place were in front of that little stage. Anybody, Ted included knew the challenge was for shits and giggles. I think they miss out on the fact that TED wrote it, is over 60 years old, and has been on the road since the 60's playing with the Amboy Dukes and others. He has played 6,000 shows and still tours every year for at least 4 or 5 months. Most guys his age don't get out of a recliner. I think it was more of a "Respect this" given in good spirits, to other players.
I'm not sure of the context, in talking about "all the bad MF guitar players out there" at NAMM 2010, so I can't fully make sense of the scope of his challenge, or how much he had to suck it up. I can easily imagine finding another guitarist to play the licks of Ted Nugent. He is a good guitarist, but he is not alone. There are many other virtuoso's out there.
I saw Nugent two weeks ago in Indianapolis. There are many great gutairist. I watched him tear it up for two straight hours. He plays with more intensity than people half his age. He is slightly sloppy here but live after touring for four months, his show in Indy was tight. Make no mistake he is one of the most underrated guitarist of all time.
If you have any doubt go see him live. Let the 8 full stacks of 5150's cleanse your soul. Peace
I'm curious, has anybody taken Ted's challenge, and how much has he had to suck it up. Ted Nugent is a good guitarist, but he is not alone. There are many other virtuoso's out there.
Ted is a pompous Ass. of course he is, we all know it, it's part of his stick. Personally I don't care for that, but I still respect and enjoy his guitar playing, and this IS one of the all time great guitar rock songs, but to me, the unsung hero of this and virtually EVERY Nugent song that I like is DEREK ST. HOLMES. One of the greatest and most underappreciated rock singers ever! InCREDIBLE voice and power, and a super nice guy too!
I love how Ted acts like hes changed the world of guitar playing and music with his Stranglehold riff, theres a lot of guitar players at NAMM that are way better than him
I was there too and this is an excellent video with great sound for the set-up. Ted's guitar sounded Killer! Thank-you for shooting & uploading because I shot "hey Baby" and then wanted to watch the "Show".
The drums weren't the object of my comment. A grossly inflated ego was. Why are so many PRS amps being pumped out, are they trying to find one that people will buy ?
In it's day "Stranglehold" was an anthem, in 2010 not so much... A tradeshow version with electronic drums falls way short of California Jam II... Derek's voice had the best tone on stage...
Derek is HOT! :)

Letting his hair down in the intro cost him dearly. He had to give 354 blowjobs later that night. I respect that he is a man of his word.
