I was 16 when this came out-it had an ENORMOUS impact on me-saw it eight times(yes-eight times!)during it's original theatrical run. It's very special-means more to me than I can say-a fairy tale, one of the most surreal, inspiring,joyous,beautiful,life-affirming films you'll ever see.Thought I was alone in my love for this film, but now I find it's got a cult following!!!There are actually other people out there who feel the same way about it that I do!.This scene has literally had me in tears...
This movie, which has gained some sort of cult following ( though a box office flop ), has a very memorable theme too, called "MAROONED WITHOUT YOU" --- music by that great French composer, Georges Delerue.
Joe is an incredible character. He sees all the beauty that there is in the world even after being chewed up and tossed out. He has been given an unintentional gift; his eyes have been forced open by his situation and he can finally start living. This movie is a hidden gem. I saw this movie when it was first released and was immediately drawn in by it. It always lifts me up when I am down.
I, being very ignorant and, basically, untouched by Christianity, was (wrongly) at a church conference where people were talking about the 'postles. I don't know much about the 'postles and, frankly, they bore me. I mentioned that watching this scene is my most religious moment and, of course, felt ridiculous and got blank faced responses in return for my confession. However, it is true. I heard once that the best thing you can say to God is thank you.
I thought I was the only insane person to see a deep meaning in this so called "silly" movie, with terrible reviews. I'm glad to find out there I'm not. For someone whose life has been dictated and therefore restricted by fear it is inspiracional. It's like a slap on my face, every time I watch it. I need to remember every single day how big...
@thehealinggirl You're not insane. I watch this movie repeatedly. It's very deep.. Philosophically rich. This is my favorite part. This and the part where he says that he loves her too, kisses her and says "but the timing stinks! I gotta go" LOL
@MaritimeJustice Don't worry, I am already. Have been hearing lots of deprecating comments about the movie but I don't care, it still remains one of my favourites and a nice (and funny) reminder to give life a chance (I prefer than to "take risk" expression..). :)
One of the greatest films and surely the greatest with such huge flaws. The opening sequence of Joe at the protology supply plant are simply magnificent film making.
As great at the opening is, how nice the middle comic sections with Bridges, Hedaya and Davis are, the island sequence is simply awful. I hesitate to call a parody racist, but it's precious close. The ending including this marvelous sequence is redemption.
Last night i watched this movie on the TV guide channel and when it came to part where he says God thank you for my Life, they cut it out . That really made me angry. I'm not a very religious guy but I believe in God . And it seems like more and more these days people want to take God out of everything .
How can you not look at the beautiful wonders of this world around us and not know that this is the work of a awesome God . Thank you for this clip, and thank you God for my life as well
I took my kids to see this movie when it first came out and I was almost positive that the line "Thank you for my life" was in this film. I just watched it TWICE on the TV Guide channel and the lines were cut out. I wonder why. That's why I came on here to check it out.
Anyway, it's more beautiful than I remember. Thank you for posting it.
It is by discouragement that courage becomes strength. When one accepts and embraces the mystery of life clarity is at hand. Moments come and are past....should be left past. The NOW is begging to become all encompassing.
Thank you for posting this! Best part of the movie! I'm an atheist, and this makes me envious of the comfort the faithful must enjoy, and makes me cry every time. Whether one believes in a greater power or not, the wonders of the Earth do make us feel small in comparison, and that's a very good thing. We all need to feel humble and enjoy life, not forget and live in a rut like Joe did. Great lesson the film teaches.
@Book7BrokeMyBrain "Whose name I do not know..." is the key line in what Joe says. All of these gods laid out in the holy books would not deserve such a loving statement from one of us humans. I am an atheist as well, but if there is a god out there that created all of this beauty and wonder he would not be the petty creatures in those dusty books that haven't even conquered jealousy in their perfect minds, yet.
@JaySoap Not so fast brother. "whose name I do not know" is part of the Jewish faith. Jews believe the true name of God to be unknown to man. I agree that Joe's God is not a small God like the Abrahamic God in the Torah, New Testament, or Koran, but if you look deeper into Jewish beliefs, you'll see that their view is more dynamic than you originally thought. But I do tend to agree that the parts about God being imminent and jealous and all that is bunch of nonsense.
I've loved this scene since I first saw the movie what seems like forever ago. It's like a grounding moment for me and I stumbled upon it by chance again today when home sick. My friend took his life last week; we served our Country together~there shouldn't have been anything he couldn't have handled without his buddies but no one knew he was struggling~he must have forgot he wasn't alone. He was a truly good man; the very best kind.
I saw this at 3:40 a.m. nine months ago... I have seen the movie on various ocassions before but until then I really understand the meaning of this little part... And I saw my life until then as the same that Joe has lived... working without really living... I quit my job that same day... I started doing what I like most, started my own business and so far... These have been the best days of my life...
Dear god... Whose name I do not know... Thank you for my life... Thank you...
Thank you for your response. Congratulations and good luck. I hope your actions lead to a better life for you in every way. I don't know you but I'm proud of you! I'm impressed with anyone with the courage to live their dreams. I only wish i could summon up the courage.... too many responsibilities. I have seen many people come and go from my job while I have remained for years. They always say the same thing: "I'm not doing this the rest of my life!" Someday I'd like to be like you. Peace.
Just curious.... what are you doing now and how did you make it happen? I love hearing how other people decided to become who they were really meant to be. It lets me know it's not impossible. I found this clip tonight for a reason, I think. What happened?
I'm doing documentary and advertising, I'm in the process of learning to fly a Hang Glider. I've been marching along the opposition agaist the Coup D'etat in my country (wich has created a lot of economical problems to many businesses, but luckily I have been not affected) I've also found that when you're doing something that you believe is right in your heart it makes you feel ALIVE. No office cubicle can make you feel like that.
funny that a movie give you a little push to change your life
@mindstormsabrewin -follow your dreams, take risks (but not extreme ones), be passionate at whatever you are doing at the moment, temper it with rational thought, and your reach should far exceed your grasp.

He actually used the name "God" and even thanked him for his life. When is the last time any of us heard that in a movie from Hollywood?
