I also have a 1990 blue 300d, it sounds exactly the same.
I posted on a mercedes benz forum asking if the engine idling sounding like a bag of spanners is normal, this is the response i got:
The sound of spanners banging in a bag, is a wonderful sound.... especially v early on a cold morning when your trying not disturb the neighbours as you start up the car.
yeah all those 6 aluminum head are lazy to pump up the lifters at first start ,I heard them tapping a bit before you went and accelerated, I know that for a fact ,and if the oil is a little old they will click until it warms up and runnit at 2500PRM at lest, but sure they are powerfull , they surpass the inline 5 Td in speed and power but not in durability,,, Marvell Mistery oil your best friend ever ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, er.
@europe0wnz funny thing is this that u have only found what? like 5 videos, theres like 13 billion out there that i talk about my benz, even if its not about mercedes, it could be some skate video and ill tell people of my 1992 mercedes 300d 2.5 turbo w124 m602....... make your babby benz look better and stop fish tailing u u dip shit
i just bought 1985 300D turbo today<333 it's weird to get use to the power curve difference compared to gasoline. so slow off the line but once you get past 20mph the thing will take off.
@beaman220 thats not his valves...thats his injectors after a while the injectors dont make a perfect spray anymore and it causes a little bit of a clunk...idk why every 1 immediatly thinks its valves.
whats an R6? i also have a 92 124 300d fantastic machine cant say it has sports car dynamics but for the £300 i paid for it, it puts a smile on my face
karl benz may have not invented the diesel engine, but his company made a beautiful contribution to the world of diesel engines ;] 180D (old?) 190D 2.2 (W201) 190D 2.5 (W201) 200D (W123/115) 220D (W123/115) 240D (W123/115) 240D 3.0 (W115) 300D (W123/115) 300D TurboDiesel (W123/124) 300D 2.5 (W124) 300SD (W126/140) 300SDL (W126) S350 TurboDiesel (W140) E300 TurboDiesel (W124/210) E320 CDI (W211)
Audi had the first TDI-engine, which was direct-injected. But Fiat already had a direct-injected diesel in the Croma. Some years later Common rail was invented by Fiat.
There is a vibration damper on the front of the engine. Sometimes the bush wears out and vibrates. Because it is near the front of the engine many people including mechanics diagnose a loose timing chain. Hold something against the damper while the engine is running, being careful of the belt!
Hi, I drive a '90 300TD turbodiesel, with 250.000kms on the clock. The knocking noise comes from the hydraulic valvelifters. There are a few reasons why they wear out, but I've just had mine replaced, and the knocking noise has gone. Thy hydraulic lifters were constantly being upgraded throughout the lifespan of the W124 300 diesel series, so when you buy new lifters (the cost about 25 euro's each, and you need twelve) you always get the latest upgrade.
i have an 87 300d that has the same knock that dissapears with reving the engine as well.. runs great 225,000 miles so far, i had always assumed it was the automatically adjusting tappets
A knock? You mean the knocking noise before I do the revs? A Mercedes mechanic once told me that its proberly the one of the oilpipes to the hydrolic valves that could be jammed. Thats why when I do some revs, the knocking-noise dissapered. The oil gets forced through the pipe. After a while in idle, it starts again. Nothing serious, he insured me. W124's can apperently go on with this problem for 200-300.000 km. It just gets more and more annoying to listen to...
@Greelanx Hi, I've got the same problem in my 90' 2,5D, (the car was standing for about 3 months withoat starting) yeas- its nothing serious for the engine, after 5 min its stopping to knock..fixing 'II cost about 250 USD (in my country)
lol i once had a w210 e300 diesel (no turbo)
one day i felt like a doing a kickdown, only the muffler didn't lol
it blew the muffler off completely, first i was a sad man.
but when i did a kickdown without the muffler i was happy lol :D

Sounds similar with my M103 W124 260E except for this is a diesel, the engine fan sounds made the similarity.

True, usually after a valve adjustment everythings cool. But the Injectors is a good explanation!
beaman220 2 years ago
i just got a new motor and it has new injectors and it doesn't make this clunk noise...and it also doesn't give off any smoke.

You have a bad valve lifter.
I replaced all 12 in my 1991 300DT.
It costed me 4000 Swedish. About 380$.
At a shop.
You can clearly hear a tapping sound in the beginning in the vid when it runs in idle

@Greelanx thats just the noise of a diesel. if you run corn oil in your car that knock goes away. it isnt any oilpipes.
