  • why doesnt wynton play like this any more. Everyone plays better when they are listening to Ornette. A good example is the SF jazz Collective album where they play ornette tunes

  • Is that Herlin Riley on drums??

Doesnt sound like Ali Jackson or look like him, Must be

  • grande herlin riley esse batera é o melhor do jazz mundial!!!!

  • Watch the entire performance on NetFlix. LCO is the backup for a fantastic drumming group. Singing in their native language.

    kakakos

  • Impresionante!

  • Wynton Marsalis is a National Treasure. I didn't get his genius until I saw him live. His music gets right into your whole being. Hard to explain, but it is so damn deep and light hearted too.

  • at 3:10 when he started playing a really slow solo over everything happening my insides almost flew out of me... so freaking crazy.

  • wow!

  • For all those trying to compare Miles to Wynton you should just stop. Firstly one comes before the other. Miles always respected Dizzy...and knew they had different styles. No Dizzy...no Miles. Now Wynton is very good technically...and is now another one of the great Trumpeters....just like Freddie, Clifford, Lee Morgan and so on. He hasn't yet done anywhere near as much to advance Jazz itself to truly be compared to Miles as a whole.

  • @jevonj77 you are completely right, however, i dont think wynton is as concerned with the progression of jazz as the preservation of its roots

  • @sounderskid21 Right...that's his focus...trying to make Jazz a form of Classical Music...

  • Man Wynton's solo was awesome:)

  • Can't we have just one video on YouTube without a bunch of idiots disrespecting the artist/musician? This is ridiculous on so many levels.

  • Thank you for sharing this awesome performance, my best regards from Colombia.

  • Wynton is definitely at the top of his game. One of the greatest trumpet players that ever lived. Like it or not.

  • This is an awesome shred video

  • @akf2000

    lol. Idiot.

  • After hearing that, people seriously want to bring up miles on comments? Oh please...

  • Love the whole connection Wynton has with the band he's a great musician with great passion for what he does love miles also but i think hes' work got kind of wired later in he's career people also don't forget about Freddie Hubbard great trumpeter

  • Comment removed

  • Sorta cool?!? Squirrels? The name of this tune is FREE isn't it? And if you know a little about music, you can easily appreciate what Wynton is playing. It's not just "whatever"

  • bad ass spelling...

  • what is the title of this piece anyway?

  • see info...

  • I prefer Wynton over Miles any day..

  • I'll take 'em both.

  • which song is that?

  • man

  • im not too keen on this track. Although Wynton does well with what he is given.

  • You have to know a little background information on Ornette Coleman and his style to better appreciate it. Nevertheless, there is good interaction among Wynton and the rhythm section.

  • Miles didn't hate Wynton, but he did have a distaste for certain things Wynton said about him and did. Yes Miles was always moving foward with music. I can't take anything away from Wynton though, he's one of the great trumpeters of this era no matter what anyone says...including Miles.

  • True to that!

  • Wynton is the greatest jazz musician ever ! Better than Louis Armstrong, better than Ellington, better than Dizzy.........NOT !!!!!!!!!!! :-)

  • Hate to bring this up, but since so many people are arguing...Didn't Miles Davis HATE Wynton Marsalis? In his autobiography he just shredded Wynton apart, countless times, for playing like people did ten years before him. Miles never stayed in one spot musically, he just kept going. Apparently he didn't really even listen to his past records. Read his autobiography, even though half the stuff in that book is probably untrue, very good read though, he is a decent author I think.

  • Hard to say if Miles hated Wynton - although Miles hated most everything. I suspect it was the direction of Wynton's art that he didn't like. Perhaps that WM could actually play the horn with a modicum of technique. In any event, croc tears from a sell-out who made a disco album. IMHO, of course.

  • Haha. Miles did hate practically everything. Everyone was a "motherfucker" in his book, hated or liked. I don't hate either, I just loved Miles' book it was really interesting.

  • Wynton also referred to some of Miles newer fusion-ee stuff (Like 'In a Silent Way') as not "real" jazz, which angered Miles. Miles said that Marsalis was a good kid, just confused.

  • thats partly because Wynton Marsalis is not an innovator when you put him next to Davis, Gillespie, Brown, and onward were. Thats the way i see it. Don't forget Miles Davis was also a very hateful person and a shrew of a person

  • wynton is technically an innovator...he does wonders for jazz today. he is more of a historian though and does try hard to preserve the roots of it instead of changing the direction too much. could be bad or good i guess. when i met him he was just cool as shit and wish i could here him live again soon. and i agree with the whole miles being hateful lol

  • whoa!! mice song!!

  • what's this song called?

  • think it's "Free"

  • What camera did you use, if you don't mind me asking? This was a great vid with great sound quality for something portable.

  • was this at red butte gardens?

  • My two cents as a Jazz musician, virtuosity is a must for this music. Don't knock a virtuostic solo just because it is not your version of free. This music is just a palate and we are the painters. Not everyone paints the same, that would be boring.

    Also, Miles had technique.

  • What song is this?

  • i saw them last night.

  • the drummer has the most fun

  • is this before or after wycliff left?

  • looks like after, we don't see wycliffe's huge bulk in the trombone section

  • haha to true

  • this is after my father wycliffe and then he came back at that time again and right now he doesn't play there anymore

  • Technical advancement does not equal musical achievement.

  • kirk , good comment, this mutherphucher is heaven sent trumpet type angel , feel me::: good shit wynton, come to el centro..get at me.... your boy....

  • I saw Wynton in Leicester,he"s one of greatests,ever.

  • Can anybody tell me what the name of this song is? Herlin Riley kicks ass and stays with Wynton all the way like Trane and Elvin did.

  • It's "Free", from the album Change of the Century.

  • What the heck does that mean?

  • ted nash is a monster.

  • wynton tells the pianist to "stroll" (lay out), but he never does!

  • Thanks, you just confirmed what I said earlier that the piano was kind of in Wynton's way. I initially thought the piano player was Dan Nimmer, but I emailed him and he said he wasn't on this gig. Not sure why people gave me a thumbs down on my earlier comment.

  • Are you kidding? Wynton smokes this... I can criticize certain stuff about him, but this is killin'!

  • When I read some of the comments posted over here disrespecting Wynton, Miles etc...I shudder. Isn't music about preference and personal choice? Personally, I hold all these Jazz masters in high esteem no matter their human weaknesses. Atleast, they're recognized for inspiring countless others. Besides, WE are watching them over here. I would love to see or hear all those slagging of these greats, play. Please post something so we learn from you too!

  • Agreed. I can't believe how openly some people are able to insult these world class musicians. Wynton and this entire group are all absolutely incredible players and improvisers. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to see them live in town, which was absolutely phenomenal! I also have met Wynton before and find him to be a very nice guy. Please take your unnecessary and degrading comments elsewhere. Don't forget that Wynton can read these posts too.

  • @TShakazBlackRoots

You shudder? What is he... your mother fucking son? Get a grip you dick sucking worshipper puppet cunt.

  • @James9533

I'm sorry, I don't belong to a juvenile playground, so I will not respond in kind. While you're at it, try get some class please. With respect.

  • @TShakazBlackRoots

Good don't. Before I fucking verbally run your face into the metaphorical concrete again and break all the teeth out of your useless jaw. You're a fucking sock puppet cunt who's only here to get thumbs up and some fucking psychological boost from being "accepted".

    Fuck you.

  • @James9533

'Verbally run your face'....Lol! Here we go again! Did someone steal this guy's toy? Could be this recession. Since when did listening to music, or having a choice become this complicated? I rest my case.

  • @TShakazBlackRoots

Stop responding to me and allow me to enjoy the video. You've effectively destroyed my ability to appreciate the musicality in this video because everytime I click on the link I have to restrain myself from scrolling down and see your incoherent regurgitations of ignorance.

Do me a favor and delete all your comments, leave an apology in my inbox and never disgrace this video with your presence again. Bye.

  • @James9533 Why should TShakaz have to 'apologize'? how about you refrain from your arrogant, profanity filled comments, and just watch the video.

  • It sounds like Wynton was a little aggravated with Dan Nimmer crowding his solo space. There's a common courtesy among jazz musicians that you don't play over anyone. It's about conversing and interacting with your fellow musicians.

  • TuKu? TaTaKa? I am coming!

  • Miles is a great example of a cat who, even though his technique was not in the virtuoso catagory, could change the course of Jazz, become a legend, and inspire countless imitators. In his prime, he had a beautiful sound and brilliantly cool ideas. I could listen to his solo on "So What" every day and never get tired of it. Kind of Blue was/is beyond catagory. In his prime, Miles was untouchable.

  • Yeah man, you're ignorant as a goats ass. Let's see you post some of your accomplishments...that is, if you have anything worth anyone else's time. Lucky for you, no one knows who you are...

  • when i read the entries from this young man, i can only reflect on the arrogance of youth. Do yourself a favour and stop talking . If you want to impress someone, make a video of your work and post it, then we can talk.

  • not all youth has ignorant comments. i personally love and enjoy this music...wynton is a master

  • what did he says at 2:13?

  • I think this kind of work is beautiful!!! I am a french jazz pianist and teacher : nous avons besoin (we need ) things like this !!!! Afro american people are loved dans le monde entier and specially in France. Bravo, continuez comme cela . Look : je vous mets five stars!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wynton is da man. Legend.

  • Great!

  • and there is a pure genius behind the camera....

  • Brilliant arrangement of the head of this tune. And brilliant wild solo. Great backup on the solo. Especially the piano playa. Kickass! This is an Ornette tune? Title anyone?

  • It's named "Free"

  • I see A lot of people commenting negatively on Wynton's playing... do you guys really have the right to critique a jazz legend? there is a reason he is leading one of the greatest big bands in the world and you are posting comments on you tube. You guys talk so much it's like you think you can do better.

  • man you have no idea bro. I'm not saying I'm better then this guy and noone else is saying that either. sure he maybe can lead the jazz on to a new level of new that hasn't been reach before especially but he is arrogant and trust dude I know Wynton and I've played with him. Wynton may have the talent and the musical knowlewdge but personality wise Wynton needs to learn how to clean up his acted.

  • P.S. Miles Davis had to cuss him out and set him striaght because he was being to cocky... ... ...plus he has no respect for trombone players

  • That's probably something Miles had to do in response to Wynton criticizing his heavy drug use. And Miles Davis was far from the infallible genius most people make him out to be, plus his technique sucked. To be fair, I'm going to go ahead and say that I am also a cocky bastard and have very little respect for trombone players, but whatever... if it sounds good, it sounds good.

  • miles davis' technique did not suck... listen to miles smiles.

  • Don't think I just threw a shit statement out without doing my research. I've listened to every Miles album several dozen times. He was a good jazzer, no doubt, but didn't have the physical side of the horn mastered like a virtuoso the way Wynton or a couple thousand other trumpet players do. He was not a brass technician, he was an idea man.

  • And the thing about that is, as a trumpet player, I'm not going to take his ideas seriously unless he has the technique of a virtuoso. That's the only way I'm going to know he's serious and not just on some cracked-out trip.

  • goddammit... i'll get technical on your ass. on gingerbread boy off of miles smiles, davis is playing eighth note lines around high e's and g's at about quarter =300. he is clean with his lines, and he is tonguing almost every note. it takes a great deal of coordination to play that way on trumpet or any other wind instrument. can you do that?

  • i will admit, his technique was not good after his hiatus, but in the sixties and fifties, he had incredible technique as well as incredible musicianship. so your statement "plus his technique sucked" in reality IS a shit statement. he is not as clean as wynton, but that does not mean his technique sucked. everybody misses notes. go back and listen to 60's miles again, like nefertiti, sorceror, ESP, live in berlin, someday my prince will come, etc...

  • Dude you really suck as a person in general. How can you criticize somebody who will literally shit on yo ass when it comes to trumpet. Miles would've just f**** you up and Wynton will.....you already know. you are just ignorant as hell. What a terrible mistake

  • First of all, you don't know who I am. Second of all, I can criticize constructively because I consider myself a musical peer. Thank you for calling me ignorant, though, and then peppering your personal attack with profanity. I appreciate that.

  • I don't have to know your identity to know you lack intelligence. Constructive Criticism one only works whent the person, i.e. Miles Davis is around....hmmm seems that he's dead and two you can't criticize him for not being a virtuoso be cause one he actually was you couldn't have possibly listened to every recording out there two it was kind of hard to be a virtuoso player in a Jazz Era. Let us reminisce on the fact his music was born in that era so that is all he knows. You're welcome

  • Constructive criticism of an exemplar from history works for young musicians today to learn from. As for which one of us lacks intelligence, we'll have to wait for you to grow up to figure that out. I have, in fact, listened to (and transcribed most of) every Miles recording. Virtuosity in the jazz era was entirely possible. Armstrong was the man who made jazz a virtuoso art. Miles was full of himself. Yes, he was a good musician and a brilliant soloist, but not a great trumpet technician.

  • Alright if you say so, no point of arguing online it's all about the music

  • scoggles: your glib, musically uninformed comments lead me to think that you're most likely the kind of person who should be selling instruments, not commenting on the playing of them. Post some of your playing, or shut up..of course you're entitled to your opinion, but then again so is George W Bush.....

  • Exactly which part of what I said was musically uninformed? I'll post my own videos when I have some videos to post. Meanwhile, I'm not going to stop having a discussion about musicianship just because I don't own decent A/V equipment. I also would like to respectfully request at this time that no further equation between myself and the President of the United States be made. Thank you.

  • My God I hope you don't talk like that in real life.

  • Sometimes I do. :-X

  • hey corey

  • less wynton and more Ron Westray

  • Well, I don't know that I agree with the less Wynton part, but Ron is certainly a beast. By the way, who are the active LCJO trombones right now? I know Chris Crenshaw is onr, not sure of the other(s).

  • Nevermind. I'll look it up.

  • Wynton Marsalis does the impossible and actually makes free jazz sound good!

  • Victor Goines, Ted Nash, Vincent Gardner, Wynton Marsalis, Carlos Henriquez, you can't get a much better line-up than that! I had the pleasure of meeting them this year, what a blast! I am 17 and I listen to this stuff, and as long as jazz is seen as having soulful content of some sort, kids will listen to it. The stuff that won't last is all that cheesy pop bullocks.

  • Im glad you like jazz...

    I grew up with it..

I live in the New Orleans area..

and i would rather listen to jazz than any other music..

  • I'd like to see some videos of YOU GUYS demonstrating said "feeling." I don't care about videos of Miles Davis doing it, or Maynard doing it, or Dizzy doing it, or Arturo doing it, etc. I already know they can. Learn this: There are different styles of jazz. You are NOT going to like every style. But SOMEBODY will, as is apparent by the applause in this video. Wynton is entertaining to these people (and me). If he's not entertaining to you, listen to somebody else. It's called personal choice.

  • I agree with most folks, there's something misplaced about the spirit of this performance. Playing 'out' for the sake of playing 'out'...loses a lot in the translation.

  • If you dont like wyntons playing then dont listen to his music and i doubt you haters have any idea how hard it is to keep jazz alive. you gotta do whatever keeps the money coming in. if hes gotta play 200 double C's to keep jazz alive so kids like you can complain about it, he'll do it. hes doing it for you and me so shut up and appreciate the fact that he cares about our future in jazz by keepin it alive

  • Being a master of one thing doesn't make him a master of everything. He can't play free jazz. It's as simple as that. Music is not bodybuilding: we're not impressed by how big his trumpet muscles are (well, some people around here are impressed, but I'm not). I think he needs to listen to free jazz, and learn the style, and not just lay on a bunch of cheesy crap that gets the audience applauding. You know, every Broadway show, EVERY one, gets a standing ovation. Are they ALL great?

  • can u play some free jazz for me?

  • Note to Wynton: playing interesting jazz MIGHT include one or more of the following: a) dynamic development b) motivic development c) actually LISTENING to free jazz in order to learn the language d) not using cheesy high notes to get cheesy applause from moron audiences e) understanding that music and sports actually do NOT have that much in common

  • Have some respect,he is a master.

  • awesome

  • This sucks. Way to kill the spirit of Ornette.

  • Wynton totally pwns

  • wtf? this is dreck, just lip service to a master wynton knows nothing about. pun intended. go back to juliard, maybe some 19 year old kid could teach you something...

  • I am sorry, andersonmaniva, I should have placed something like ;) at the end of my previous comment, you would undestand it was a joke and would not make you so angry and rude.

    Open your mind!!

  • Dont be sorry, greg, I am sorry cuz I call you moron, and is morrow. =)

Thnx for the advice, I'll open my mind.

  • I can't understand- that guy with a sax in the front, on the left, did he come to play or drink vodka?

  • its water, moron!!!!

  • just amazing
