@somegrybloke (I'm not sure if you've already had a response to the question of unplugging the monitor) When the monitor is unplugged from the electricity supply, the pathway for the energy is merely cut off. Wow! I thought no one knows that global warming is a big giant hoax! I had this kiddie's encyclopedia that says the size of a small sunspot (darker but hotter parts of the sun) on the sun is equivalent to the size of millions of Earths put together. What's to say we are not in the lumination on just one of the sunspots on the giant Sun? Al Gore got sued by 60000 scientists for hoaxing but few know this. Yes, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to find out that, it only takes a kid's encyclopedia!
Really its us against the earth I say we pore all our money into the space program find a new planet to screw up and on our way out blow this one up. Also leave most of our religious and government leaders behind. And make George W Bush, Tony Blare, tag team against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Kim Jong-il in a death match….. Next Earth hour I'm gonna whip out my decks and play some really loud music at full volume with all the lights in my house on and i might even hang up flashing christmas lights outside. I'm debating robbing a bank and also setting up a space shuttle launch in my back garden aswell...
@somegreybloke Well, i'm reading this on my LCD moniter, which contain two pieces of glass with liquid crystal and a backlight inside. When electricity passes through the crystal molecules, they allow certain colours to pass through them.
They do this by aligning in specific patterns of either "on" or "off, depending on the command. Active matrix displays on an LCD monitor work by only letting the certain pixel rows use capacitors to receive an "on" charge while the others are turned off.
@somegreybloke energy can be used the same way you use water ... care to make an "earth hour" during which all of us stop using water?!
Energy can be transformed, electricity is a FORM of energy, therefore it can be transformed, mostly gets transformed into heat as you "use" it while reading on your LCD, part of it gets turned into light, both forms of energy, as an analogy, water you "use" doesn't vanish, it transforms and can be brought back to initial state, same goes for electricity. :D
@somegreybloke He is right. This is why the theory on the expansion of the universe is invalid, matter cannot be destroyed and neither can energy. They can only be converted into other types of matter / energy. Matter cannot be 'added' to the mix and it cannot be 'removed' from the mix, the same goes for energy. (:
When you say 'save energy' what you really mean is 'Stop using energy which is the result of converting fossil fuels into Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Methane (CH4)'
@nawby Do you believe that to "use" energy you must necessarily destroy it? I use lots of things without destroying them, and I use lots of energy without destroying it. I connect devices to energy sources which provide energy in forms I can control, and the devices convert the energy from one form to another and channel it to cause things that I consider useful to happen, until eventually the energy dissipates in ways I can no longer control (mostly as heat, usually). I have *used* that energy.
@nawby So if I use my... toothbrush, I destroy it? Sometimes when you make a comment to show that you are smart you can end up showing the opposite. It doesn't mean you're dumb or anything. It might mean you didn't think about it enough or that you feel the need to show you're smart. No big deal, man. I'm just saying. Oh, and isn't it rude to try to show that someone is wrong for no reason whatsoever?
@JohnCry I never stated that if use something you destroy it. The only thing stated was The Law of Conservation of Energy, which is you can neither destroy it or create it. Energy can only change forms.
@nawby But you did state that it's impossible to use energy and you added that it can neither be created nor destroyed. But using energy doesn't mean you destroy it. So it's not impossible to "use" energy, it is only impossible to destroy it. I was merely underlining this. I don't know why you said that you cannot use energy. And I don't mean to anger you (I want to say this before it happens, if it happens).
"But hold on, if energy never goes away, if the total amount always stays the same, why do we have to worry about not wasting it? Can't we just keep reusing it? We don't really "use" energy, we convert it, and it never "get's used up".
Ninth big parograph, and an induced flame war is not necessary. ftexploring [dot] com/energy/first-law [dot] html
@nawby Simply said, the energy we use comes mainly from depletable resources which generate pollutants during the processes of producing electricity. These pollutants are the "bad guys". By using less energy (electricity) the production is reduced and so are the pollutants. Another direction we can take is to use non-poluting, renewable energy resources (e.g. solar energy). Once you burn some oil, what remains is not reusable, but we cannot deplete solar energy.
@nawby He is using it. Without it, his computer or whatever wouldn't work. Sure it doesn't get destroyed, but it's being used nontheless. Take a water-turbine for instance. Water passes down through the turbine and makes it spin. But is the water destroyed by that process? No. It's merely being used, it's passes through and continues to exist pouring into a river or whatnot.
@nawby it is scientifically possible to use energy. when energy is not being used it is called potential energy. the amount of energy exists but is not active in powering something.
@nawby thats are infact true. but there is such a thing as energy value. and exergy. as energy is used to do work the energy value is decreesed .(wich actually means that the amount of useful energy is drecreesed) there by we have a term called exergy witch means the amount work that can be done by that amount of energy. and exergy can and is getting used.
Global warming is real. But it's only because the Earth goes through cycles. If Earth heats up too much it will just have another ice age... but it will always be here. It's a rock. It's not like it can die. People just want us to make a futile effort to "reverse it" because they know that with the cycle we will all die. But we're so screwed up already, I'd say we deserve it.
Ok, I am not a climate expert but I do know that over the last 25 years the earth hasn't gotten any warmer. I have these things called thermometers that actually measure the temperature outside and I'll be damned if the temperature outside right now is NOT any higher than it was this time of the year last year, or the year before, or 10 years ago, or even 20.
The 'experts' say we have had global warming for 30 years. So where is it? Why isn't it any warmer?
Why are we having record snow falls? Why isn't there any record high temperatures being set all the time?
Why are world famous climatologists sending e-mails to each other talking about changing climate records to better illustrate global warming? (true, look it up)
Why are we so worried about CO2 when it is only responsible for .4% (four tenths of one percent) of any greenhouse gas warming? Water vapor accounts for 98%. Should we regulate steam emissions, or clouds?
@KurNorock I can't be bothered really, but just about the record high temperatures, they are being set all the time. january 2010 for example was a record for hottest month worldwide since satellite measurements began. Snow in any one place is just a tiny part of a bigger picture.
@curlytwerp - Snow in any one place? Try the entirety of North America and most of Europe. Record hottest January world wide? Not really no. Maybe the hottest on record in AUSTRALIA where that story originated. And just in case you didn't know, January is the middle of summer in Australia, it is supposed to be hot.
Arctic sea ice reached its maximum extent on March 31st this year. The LATEST date on record. If it is so hot out there, why is the ice growing later in the year?
@KurNorock Hottest January Globally, not just Australia;- google Paul hudson january 2010 warmest
You're right about the ice, but this is cherrypicking data, and climate data zig-zags. Look over longer periods, it is zig zagging in the direction of less and less ice. Its really the amount of ice that is scarily dropping, the date of maximum extent is less important. the lowest recorded level of ice was 2006. google arctic sea ice news to see how the fact you cited is an exeption not the rule.
@curlytwerp - Until Somebody can make an ACCURATE prediction about global warming, there is no evidence to support it. I've been hearing about it for 20 years now and it is actually COOLER now than it was then. By now the sea levels were supposed to be 200ft higher, the ice caps were supposed to be gone, and the Ozone layer was supposed to be but a memory. 75% of all the animals on earth were supposed to be extinct, and all our farmland was supposed to be a dust bowl. NEVER HAPPENED.
@KurNorock - you're right to be skeptical of apocalyptic predictions, but the examples you give are not the same as AGW. This is not the opinion of one or a few scientists, or something blown up by the media, but the consensus of the overwhelming majority of climate scientists who actually know the subject much better than you or me.
@KurNorock And Wikipedia ozone depletion, the problem hasn't gone away, but it is less of a threat because of the international efforts reducing the CFC chemicals which were damaging the ozone layer. thats the kind of action we need now. It's not cooler now than 20 years ago. It's hotter. Please cite a (decent) source. and google Nasa Climate Data and look at the top result (GISS).
@KurNorock What do you mean by accurate prediction? weather systems are incredibly chaotic, so the kind of accuracy you might want is impossible. I think you should have a glance at the wikipedia page for "instrumental Temperature record".
I had the netbook computer and a couple of low-energy lights on during Earth Hour. I'm in favour of saving energy and using it more efficiently, but I strongly feel that turning all the lights off was sending the wrong message. Lights, computers, electricity etc are all symbols of civilisation, and demanding we turn everything off is Luddism at its most pernicious.
Your videos are really funny, this is obviously satire aimed at the people that make ridiculous claims trying to debunk scientifically proven principles. It's worrying reading through the comments at how most people either don't tag the satirical undertones and or take what you are saying literally.
Ah to be a cynic...it sucks but it's what the current social state merits. applicable only to those capable of thinking critically.
Good job Mike, I don't know you but regardless good job.
in observance earth hour i purchased a bunch of lumber and had a bonfire in the yard. This way i wasn't left in the dark when I turned off the lights.
people live in fear of it, so media is attracted to it, which attracts more people to fear it, and because of this mass fear it is easy for a scientist to get funding for global warming research. etc.. and the cycle continues
a few decades back we were in fear of nuclear warfare, then terrorists, and for a while birdflu and swineflu a bet within a decade we will be in fear of something else xD, and would have forgotten about this 'crysis'
@SplashProofStudios The fears of global warming are indeed as well-founded as those of nuclear warfare, you really don't have any idea how close we let it come do you?
You know that he really does care about the environment, guys. He also knows that smoking does cause cancer, etc. Love how he makes his point by using sarcasm and dry humor. Obviously not everyone understand this approach, but we all love you grey bloke. I have spots on my nose too.
People will never kill the earth. That is a ridiculous comment. At worst we will destroy its ability to sustain us and other similar life. Lets all stop with this "save the planet" bull and call it what it is. Save ourselves. atleast that way it has some credibility.
well if we dont do anything and keep going with this poluted life style odds are that the ozone (that thing that saves us from the sun)
will be totaly destroyed. and by destroying the ablity to sustain us is bad. thats the problem the poeple of today are so ignorant and selfish that they dont even think of our children and our future generations. we have to save this earth to show that we humans are worth while and not just a cancer.
@spimpile abillity to sustain us? How? By cutting off our arms so we can't pick up food? The planet can easily be destoryed as we can destroy our body.
@spimpile There is one exception, and that is when a massive asteroid that has the potential to completely destroy the planet can be stopped by human kind. We're not able to do that yet, but we might be in the future. Other than that, you're right.
lol If you guys still don't get the point of this video you must be mentally impaired. He is just saying that theres a lot of unqualified people on the internet with no credibility what so ever that always make videos claiming that a lot of things are hoaxes etc...
and basically if you want to educate yourself dont watch youtube videos.. just buy books by credible experts and do proper research before deciding that something is false
Oh...it was March 27th. The day of my brothers birthday. Sorry, we needed lights on that day :/ But I would have appreciated knowing this...but I live in a crappy southern state and well, they're far from making an effort anyway.
@ImFreakinBilly - 'Supports global warming'? Fucking christ dude... remove your head from your ass and the n-word from your vocabulary and come join the real world
Its a pointless idea and if EVERYONE did it the national grid would fuck up! (think about a river flowing constantly into a lake, then into the sea, then imagine blocking of the lake/sea link, the lake would over flow!)
Meh. Not all of the experts agree on this matter. wrt to those experts who do believe that AGW is real and a threat, there's now clearly legitimate doubt as to whether data and models they have relied on to reach their conclusions are trustworthy in the first place (see the temperature station fiasco for one example).
@somegreybloke I read on the internet that processed cheese is made by climate change conspiracy theorists, a subsidiary of Philip Morris, and apartheid-era South Africans that look like Joss Ackland. So, I would opt for the smelly kind of cheese instead.
@somegreybloke Ha, I was just saying it to break up the monotonous arguements about whether people turning off their lights for an hour will do anything or not, but I would have to say that mature chedder is the best (although I'm not exactly a cheesehead) :S Your a funny guy by the way, good old bit of British comedy.
@somegreybloke I'm partial to american cheese for melting..not because I'm american, of course, just because it melts easy.. Then..there's velveta..but I'm not so sure that velveta is a cheese as much as it might be an unknown toxic substance that fell to earth..you know..presumably from outer space...good on toast, though..
Cheddar obviously melts the best, but I would recommend Lancashire, sprinkled with black pepper, because it's less likely to become stuck in between the keys on the computer keyboard and make it misprinhtrdfs.
I love the religious overtones the Global Warming movement has taken on. Clinging to faith, inspite of the evidence, cherry picking what data to believe in. Ignoring any and all evidence that might cast dispersions upon the faith or the faithful. Establishing cult leaders, and then enriching them. That basic need for religion, no matter what form it takes, still remains. This is just the most recent incantation of it.

CRWCarey 1 year ago
Ok, I am not a climate expert but I do know that over the last 25 years the earth hasn't gotten any warmer. I have these things called thermometers that actually measure the temperature outside and I'll be damned if the temperature outside right now is NOT any higher than it was this time of the year last year, or the year before, or 10 years ago, or even 20.
The 'experts' say we have had global warming for 30 years. So where is it? Why isn't it any warmer?
KurNorock 1 year ago
Why are we having record snow falls? Why isn't there any record high temperatures being set all the time?
Why are world famous climatologists sending e-mails to each other talking about changing climate records to better illustrate global warming? (true, look it up)
Why are we so worried about CO2 when it is only responsible for .4% (four tenths of one percent) of any greenhouse gas warming? Water vapor accounts for 98%. Should we regulate steam emissions, or clouds?
KurNorock 1 year ago
@KurNorock I can't be bothered really, but just about the record high temperatures, they are being set all the time. january 2010 for example was a record for hottest month worldwide since satellite measurements began. Snow in any one place is just a tiny part of a bigger picture.
curlytwerp 1 year ago
@curlytwerp - Snow in any one place? Try the entirety of North America and most of Europe. Record hottest January world wide? Not really no. Maybe the hottest on record in AUSTRALIA where that story originated. And just in case you didn't know, January is the middle of summer in Australia, it is supposed to be hot.
Arctic sea ice reached its maximum extent on March 31st this year. The LATEST date on record. If it is so hot out there, why is the ice growing later in the year?
KurNorock 1 year ago
@KurNorock Hottest January Globally, not just Australia;- google Paul hudson january 2010 warmest
You're right about the ice, but this is cherrypicking data, and climate data zig-zags. Look over longer periods, it is zig zagging in the direction of less and less ice. Its really the amount of ice that is scarily dropping, the date of maximum extent is less important. the lowest recorded level of ice was 2006. google arctic sea ice news to see how the fact you cited is an exeption not the rule.
curlytwerp 1 year ago
@curlytwerp - Until Somebody can make an ACCURATE prediction about global warming, there is no evidence to support it. I've been hearing about it for 20 years now and it is actually COOLER now than it was then. By now the sea levels were supposed to be 200ft higher, the ice caps were supposed to be gone, and the Ozone layer was supposed to be but a memory. 75% of all the animals on earth were supposed to be extinct, and all our farmland was supposed to be a dust bowl. NEVER HAPPENED.
KurNorock 1 year ago
@KurNorock - you're right to be skeptical of apocalyptic predictions, but the examples you give are not the same as AGW. This is not the opinion of one or a few scientists, or something blown up by the media, but the consensus of the overwhelming majority of climate scientists who actually know the subject much better than you or me.
curlytwerp 1 year ago
@KurNorock And Wikipedia ozone depletion, the problem hasn't gone away, but it is less of a threat because of the international efforts reducing the CFC chemicals which were damaging the ozone layer. thats the kind of action we need now. It's not cooler now than 20 years ago. It's hotter. Please cite a (decent) source. and google Nasa Climate Data and look at the top result (GISS).
curlytwerp 1 year ago
@KurNorock What do you mean by accurate prediction? weather systems are incredibly chaotic, so the kind of accuracy you might want is impossible. I think you should have a glance at the wikipedia page for "instrumental Temperature record".
curlytwerp 1 year ago
I had the netbook computer and a couple of low-energy lights on during Earth Hour. I'm in favour of saving energy and using it more efficiently, but I strongly feel that turning all the lights off was sending the wrong message. Lights, computers, electricity etc are all symbols of civilisation, and demanding we turn everything off is Luddism at its most pernicious.

Your videos are really funny, this is obviously satire aimed at the people that make ridiculous claims trying to debunk scientifically proven principles. It's worrying reading through the comments at how most people either don't tag the satirical undertones and or take what you are saying literally.

i agreee with graham, is a big hoax.
people live in fear of it, so media is attracted to it, which attracts more people to fear it, and because of this mass fear it is easy for a scientist to get funding for global warming research. etc.. and the cycle continues
a few decades back we were in fear of nuclear warfare, then terrorists, and for a while birdflu and swineflu a bet within a decade we will be in fear of something else xD, and would have forgotten about this 'crysis'

TheTrueMetal9 1 year ago
@TheTrueMetal9 there's nothing wee can do about it, though. the ozone layer is now COMPLETELY gone in NZ and some parts of australia.
ComeOnYouCeltz 1 year ago
@spimpile abillity to sustain us? How? By cutting off our arms so we can't pick up food? The planet can easily be destoryed as we can destroy our body.
finnsia 1 year ago
@spimpile There is one exception, and that is when a massive asteroid that has the potential to completely destroy the planet can be stopped by human kind. We're not able to do that yet, but we might be in the future. Other than that, you're right.

Its a pointless idea and if EVERYONE did it the national grid would fuck up! (think about a river flowing constantly into a lake, then into the sea, then imagine blocking of the lake/sea link, the lake would over flow!)
bennett93ish 1 year ago
Meh. Not all of the experts agree on this matter. wrt to those experts who do believe that AGW is real and a threat, there's now clearly legitimate doubt as to whether data and models they have relied on to reach their conclusions are trustworthy in the first place (see the temperature station fiasco for one example).

somegreybloke 1 year ago
@somegreybloke I read on the internet that processed cheese is made by climate change conspiracy theorists, a subsidiary of Philip Morris, and apartheid-era South Africans that look like Joss Ackland. So, I would opt for the smelly kind of cheese instead.
luciremagazine 1 year ago
@somegreybloke Ha, I was just saying it to break up the monotonous arguements about whether people turning off their lights for an hour will do anything or not, but I would have to say that mature chedder is the best (although I'm not exactly a cheesehead) :S Your a funny guy by the way, good old bit of British comedy.

Go ask Wallace, Graham. He's the go-to man on all varieties of cheese. Dont he & Gromit live down the street from you?
"Cracking toast, Gromit!"
owlcowl 1 year ago
@somegreybloke I'm partial to american cheese for melting..not because I'm american, of course, just because it melts easy.. Then..there's velveta..but I'm not so sure that velveta is a cheese as much as it might be an unknown toxic substance that fell to earth..you know..presumably from outer space...good on toast, though..
Traumtanzer 1 year ago
@somegreybloke
Cheddar obviously melts the best, but I would recommend Lancashire, sprinkled with black pepper, because it's less likely to become stuck in between the keys on the computer keyboard and make it misprinhtrdfs.

proof2580 1 year ago
I love the religious overtones the Global Warming movement has taken on. Clinging to faith, inspite of the evidence, cherry picking what data to believe in. Ignoring any and all evidence that might cast dispersions upon the faith or the faithful. Establishing cult leaders, and then enriching them. That basic need for religion, no matter what form it takes, still remains. This is just the most recent incantation of it.
