  • I wish Mario land VB would have been released, it looks awesome. Great video, could you imagine if you got caught :/

  • sell them!!!! finish these games and please sell them (limited editions!!!)

  • @pstudeba - Just because you're 31 (soon to be 32 ) doesn't mean

your childhood passions end. Those that do lose their childhood passion

are the most dullest people on the Earth.

Thanks for the compliments...It was my pleasure...I'm also thrilled you got something

out of it. More to come ^_^

  • It's a shame that proper Mario game never came out at launch, the Virtual Boy might have had a sliver of a chance then.

  • Someone needs to dump these.

  • NO WAY! A Mario game for the VB... grrrr.

I'm so upset that Nintendo canned the VB so early. I guess they didn't have a choice because the public was not very receptive.

I just learned that Nintendo has been playing with 3D since the GBC era. The 3D effects did not work very well with the technology then, but I for one am very excited for the month of May 2011. I'd like to see Virtual Boy games make a return as VC games on the 3DS.

  • @DarakuTenshi Since the GBC era? Games like 3-D WorldRunner and Rad Racer (both from 1987) feature a 3D mode compatible with conventional 3D-glasses, and are notable for being two of the first stereoscopic 3D games. There's also the Japanese only Famicom 3D System (a pair of liquid crystal shutter glasses that received video signals through a special adapter) compatible with a handful of games (Rad Racer among them).

Nintendo's been playing with 3D since before the original GB ever existed. ;)

  • @Holothurion Sorry I meant specifically for a handheld system. I know they had 3D games both in Red/Blue on the NES and a more advanced system on the Famicom similar to what most people have seen on the SMS.

  • @DarakuTenshi Oh, if you were talking about handhelds, yeah, I have to agree with your comment. ^_^

  • so did you film this?

  • You sir/madam, you have a piece of gold right here. Jackpot. :)

  • not bad

    i would play it :)

  • Why'd you wait so long to upload this?

  • @ninjablooper - At first, I didn't know how to present the clip without something relevant like a site dedicated to Virtual Boy and its games. Then, I stumbled upon the Planet Virtual Boy site. I noticed they were pretty hardcore in restoration and legacy of the VB and its homebrew community. It got me very interested in providing them retro clips of the VB. It basically just felt like the right thing to do.

  • @Grooveraider the console sucks, so why do you may upload a video about a console what sucks?

  • AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH! This video just blew my mind! I've only seen maybe a handful of blurry photos of Mario Land for the VB and have always wanted to see some footage of the game in action. Thank you to whoever video-taped it!!!

But alas it's also kind of a damn shame because even if a beta build does exist somewhere it probably has maybe just a couple levels at most. This was rather early in the VB's life-span and I doubt the developers had very much of the game done. :/

  • man, I love your videos. Please never stop posting.

  • Hmmm. So apparently judging by the stone head in the shape of Wario, he was supposed to return as an antagonist for this game, meaning that Wario was supposed to be a big villain for another title (the hand held Mario Land series) like Bowser was for the main consoles (NES, SNES.)

I would have loved to see that. Not that I don't mind Wario as the anti-hero, but I miss him as an asshole antagonist.

  • wasn't the VB like the first "3D" console??

  • @natoel - Provide the source on such a case or it didn't happen.

  • @natoel I dont know about the Virtual Boy but your post is giving me cancer. ;)

  • No just headaches due to eye strain if played for long periods at a time without a break

  • If you play on a screen wearing glasses it isn't so bad, but the viewer thing was uncomfortable and caused neck problems. The red graphics were also just strange. If I played for a while my vision was messed up afterwards.

  • amazing nostalgic stuff right here. i asked my rents for one of these but never got it. thanks for sharing this!

  • didnt they stop making vb cuz it caused you harm or something?

  • it was really harmful. think it cause bad eye sight, dizziness and other more things but im not exactly sure though

  • wow its been that long....gezz 1995...wanted 1 of these VB's..but didn't have the money....

  • Where did the outro tune come from? It was pretty groovy, groovraider.

  • @Robocheeseball701 - Both intro and outro are from the Virtual Boy game "Galactic Pinball". The tune is called "Gumpei's Voyage" composed by Kenji Yamamoto of the original Metroid series.

  • signifigance of this video in a nut shell please?

  • @elpadroney - Do you bother to read the content before commenting ? Seriously, how can you not understand what was being shown in the clip shot 15 years ago ? Unless you're not a gamer then i'll understand.

  • @Grooveraider I dont understand the description

  • @elpadroney - In a nutshell - the two demos - Starfox 2:04 and Mario Land 3:10 . Until recently, both demos were only featured as screen captures in professional gaming magazine publications dated back 15 years ago. I just happened to upload this footage I shot when Nintendo just announced their new 3D portable "3DS". The gaming press happened to be referencing the "3DS" to Nintendo's last attempt at a 3-Dimensional portable - Virtual Boy.

  • The first game screen actualy shows Red Alarm and not Starfox that never was release for Nintendo Virtual Boy.

  • @marcelocarvalhodutra

I think that "starfox" was supposed to be the sort animation that appears after the Mario Land demo. It looked a lot less wire-frame-y than red alarm.

  • A good idea would be to lurk moar and post on Assemblergames. You will heve more possibilites doing so.

  • Holy shit! Did I just see a sequel to Guardian Legend? That would have been so sweet.

  • To think that probably these could have been the Virtual Boy's selling points. That Mario game looks pretty sweet, and not bad about that Starfox overview.

    R.I.P. Gunpei Yokoi

  • Man! You are some kinda superhero for getting that footage, since those demos are probably never going to be heard from again. I wish the Mario game were around back when I had my $20 VB from Blockbuster.

Honestly, it was a fun system, it just didn't have enough (released) games. I'd buy a WiiWare remake of Mario Clash. There were times when Galactic Pinball and the system in general made me feel kind of claustrophobic, though. I'd also put down money that the Mario game became Wario Land.

  • Thanks for uploading. A great look back into history, for sure!

Mario Land VB looked pretty interesting (wasn't to crazy about the music in that one stage though).

  • The Virtual Boy is red, because it uses less battery power than color. Batteries back then were rough on a lot of video game handhelds. Today, there's Ni-MH and Lithium Ion batteries.

Zelda? Overview? Before the Zelda series had overview action-adventure gameplay, there were Hydlide, the Ultima series and The Tower of Druaga series.

  • Nice ninja'ing Groove!

If it wasn't for people like you, taking risks like this the fans would never get a chance see what could have been.

    Thanks.

  • mamamia!!!! thnak you so much for uploading this:D this was the first time i ever saw a video of star fox and mario land vb:D i hope some one can find those carts and dump the roms XD

  • My Gosh, amazing stuff! Thanks for sharing!

  • IT'S SO VIRTUAL MY HEAD EXPLODED!

  • WOW. I never thought I'd see where those beta starfox VB pictures came from. thanks soooo much dude. ^_^

  • I wish i could find that mario game

  • Busting out the VB... nice!

  • @patrickcoyne - Those were the days huh, Mr. Nutz . I miss it ^_^

  • Great post, can't imagine how's a Zelda or F-Zero game could have turn out to be on this plateform...

Pretty cool 8bit presentation music also, what game is this came from ??

  • @TheAmuseum - Thanks for watching ^_^

I was looking forward to that F-Zero VB game when the pictures first appeared in Nintendo Power. I'm kinda a sucker for wireframed games since Atari's Star Wars coin-op. The 8bit presentation music is actually the theme from Galactic Pinball on Virtual Boy. Tune is a called "Gumpei's Voyage" composed by Kenji Yamamoto of the famed early Metroid games.

  • Man, would've loved to see Hudson flesh out that Star Soldier demo into a full game.

  • Dude awesome footage. Thanks so much for uploading. If i could get a copy of that mario game it would give me reason to go out and get a VB

  • with the announcement of the 3DS I wonder if virtual boy games could work on it

  • @dandudespaceman - Nah, its not gonna be possible for the VB games to work on the 3DS. Its a different kind of 3D Nintendo is implementing on N3DS.

  • I love the ohhhh and ahhhs and "holy shi..." when Mario was falling in the hole.

  • @Drathy - What you heard in the clip was true feelings captured there - lol I saw the potiential in VB despite of the design flaws. I preferred to wear the VB goggles. But due to safety precautions on behalf of Nintendo - that wasn't gonna be possible so I accepted it.

  • Amazing footage, what was your first impressions of the VB?

  • @amurphy - Thanks for compliments ^_^

My first impressions was a "pretty damn good concept" attitude. I definitely had some favorites from the show like Galactic Pinball, Telerboxer, and Red Alarm because they were so close to completion at the time. Starfox and Mario Land were definitely on my list. But they were just demos. There was no way to try them out.

  • roms plz

  • INCREIBLE !!! D:

  • Fun-tastic! :D

  • it's incredible to see Mario in motion after all these years, I really wish they'd released that! Thanks a ton for sharing, the VB fans everywhere appreciate it!

  • @AdRichBiatch - You're totally welcome. Thanks for watching. The pleasure was all mine ^_^

  • Groove...I swear to god you secretly have a time machine and are just going back to these old press events so you can score these super rare photo ops.

  • @shorty1k - I wish that was the case because there was other things I missed out on filming :(

  • that mario game looked awesome

  • WOW THERE WAS STAR FOX AND MARIO LAND!

  • this channel is a retro-gamers wet dream ! :)

  • WOAH! awesome, awesome post dude! This means there must be a cart of this somewhere :D hopfully one day it will find its way out to the VB community ;)

  • @MatSpeedle - I would like to think that way. But there's no real concrete evidence these demos are in the hands of someone. Hence why i'm inquiring anyone who may know of the whereabouts of these demos. But then its also possible these demos never left Nintendo Co.Ltd

  • Isn't the Mario VB prototype just a really, REALLY early version of Wario Land? Sure looks like it, with the background / foreground mechanic and the giant Wario-esque Thwomps.

  • As usual great unseen footage. Any chance you took footage of Mario 64 in it's incomplete state or zelda oot?

  • Ironic that 3D is making a comeback nowadays with movies, and games.

  • I never thought I'd see VB Mario Land in motion, yet here it is! I've loved the Virtual Boy ever since I got it for my fifth birthday (and I've got the fuzzy vision to prove it!)

  • Interesting. Never knew they were planning a Mario Land game for the VB. I can imagine that it was never completed seeing as how the VB was less than successful.

  • Thank you so much for uploading this I love the Virtual Boy.
