I've always wondered where the point of the tunnel is that the land meets the bay. As I watched this video, I came to conclusion that the blue light displayed at 2.09 is where the two meet
I remembered how quiet it waswhen I rode through the transbay tube back when it first opened to the public prior to revenue service in the fall of 1974 when a few excursion trains ran between the Coliseum station to the Montgomery Street station. The Embarcadero station was still being worked on and was not accessible at that time. Quiet through the tube back then. Loud now!!!
i grew up riding bart but i take caltrain now because i hate the noise when you go into a tunnel. i would ride bart again if they made it like the vancouver skytrain
@lcirej71 I'm guessing it was the water from the San Francisco Bay. I've always wondered what it was but that's gotta be my best guest!!! Wait...did you know that they go under the San Francisco Bay??? That's why it's very loud.
@impulsw - Yeah! I used to ride BART from South Hayward to Fremont. Sometimes to place where the A's/Raiders play. Once in a while I go to downtown San Francisco. Embarcadero to Powel Street. I live in San Joaquin County now.
@white93taurusgl Also have you noticed at that point for a second or two the deafening sound of the train traveling through the tunnel gets quiet? That's how I always knew we were entering the tube. Does it on the SF side too, for leaving the tube.
@LurkerPatrol5 its the Lake Merritt tunnel right? the one between West Oakland Lake Merritt. the train would go there slowly because of some crap happening there
People use it everyday and don't realize what an engineering feat it is. It's 40 years old and to this day it's still the longest and deepest immersed tube tunnel in the world. Turkey is now building a deeper tube but a 40 year record is a pretty impressive run.
For the automatic announcement system on the Next Generation BART cars:
"Now entering TransBay Tube to San Francisco."
"Now approaching The Embarcadero. First San Francisco stop. Connection is available to MUNI Bus and Light Rail lines. Doors will open on the left side.
When i was 12 i went on a school field trip to Bart headquarters at Lake Merrit Station... Even saw the control operators behind the glass and the whole layout of the then new system.... was an experience i'll never forget.
just last week i went over to sfo chinatown..took the BART. and always wondered why its so noisy..when i took the PATH several years back..i dont think i remember a train being that loud..btw, what sort of training does one must go through in order to work as a TO for BART?
Yeah, where the walk way "curbs down" are also yellow colored lights which represents where the emergency doors are. Those are used to bored another train if the train you're on breaks down...o.O not the best thing to have on one's mind when 50 or more feet below the sea
is there a lot of room in there, can u adjust the seat and push it back some, from what I have seen the seat looks real close the the consol cant be comfortible are the older A car cab roomier that the new C car cab
I think that light is a subway vent at the entrance of the transbay tube. You can notice with the light that the train enters a circular tunnel which is the tube.
There is also a vent at the SF entrance to the tube. I ran into it when I was walking around the tip of the ferry building pier by the embarcadero. It caught me by surprise because I could hear the trains very clearly so I followed the noise. I ended up staying there, listening to the trains for a while lol!
What if you were in some undercover racketeering crime thing, and you decided to exit through vents that took you to the tunnel (without you knowing where it would take you.) Imagine ending up in a mysterious, spacious tunnel with all of those sounds.
Its the transition from the tunnel to the transbay tube and I'm pretty sure its also the location of one of the two ventilation structures, hence the bright light.
@gothyoda I don't think the transbay tube runs under Treasure Island. It runs south of the bay bridge. The light was a ventilation spot somewhere in the port of Oakland.
The transbay tube isn't so loud anymore, thanks to the rail grinder.

Your ears don't pop from loud noises. They pop because of air pressure differences.

Front car is a C-car. Those are my favorite cars.
slicknickxp 1 year ago
The nosed cars are called "A-cars" and are used 50/50 with the flat "C-cars". C cars are flat so they can be used as both a cab and middle car.

what was the final destination of this train?

There's 1/3 of a chance it will be headed for SFO, and 2/3 of a chance it's headed for Millbrae.
Coastergeekperson04 3 years ago
@Coastergeekperson04 it also could have gone to daly city

Judging from the destination sign when the train entered Embarcadero, I'd say Millbrae.

yo let me know i'm wondering how it is, before I start working there is that seat is adjustable moving foward or backwords in the a car and c car
01hotbone 3 years ago
Why only 62 MPH when the line is coded for 80 MPH?
PSurfliner 3 years ago
The command is 80 MPH, but the current stock that BART uses balances out at around 65-70 MPH, which means they can't physically achieve 80 MPH.
FanRailer 3 years ago
ive been on a few Bart trains where i have seen the speed hit 73mph on the Fremont line yrs ago.
postman960 3 years ago
Its a computer controlled system... the reason for 62mph is to keep the trains appropriately spaced apart.
postman960 3 years ago
I've also heard rumors that the maximum allowable speed in the Transbay Tube has been lowered as it has aged.
PSurfliner 3 years ago
You know, that would not surprise me at all. Considering how long that tunnel has been in use and how frequently it gets used.
510FILMS 3 years ago
I've noticed that the walkway on the left side of the tunnel looks like it goes down and up in some spots. Any ideas?

I noticed about a 1/4 of the way through the tunnel there's light above the tunnel, is this some sort of emergency exit at Treasure Island?
Brrr, just watching this video makes me feel the drop of temperature that I feel when in the tube

The Transbay Tube is underwater at the San Francisco Bay. On the WMATA metro, the Green line train goes under the Anacostia River.

white93taurusgl 3 years ago
The red number is the maximum speed that the train can go. It changes frequently.
