I was introduced to this beautiful song by Blair Dunlop at a wee session last night, although he uses his own variant tuning. My searching lead me to your post and I'd like to thank you for not only this lovely rendition, but also the 'how to' video.
Two questions if I may: what strings are you using? (my old Simon & Patrick with 11's sounds a bit 'baggy' on the 1st string) and what guitar is that?
@AdamBeresfordBrowne Hi Andy, glad you like the video. At the time of making this video I was using Newtone Masterclass strings in a custom gauge - 56, 44, 34, 24, 17, 13. Google them and you'll find their website, they'll make any gauge sets you like. The guitar is a Lowden O25C. Say 'Hi' to Blair for me!
Good on you! And yes, In one of his English guitar primers Michael Raven mentioned that Nic Jones played banjo. I think Martin Carthy also mentioned that in an old Sing Out article.
Where have you been hiding? Fabulous. Tremendous performance all round. Inspires me to keep practising. Gorgeous guitar. Was that in an alternate tuning? Can I also have your hands? I have not seen better for playing guitar. Many thanks for that most enjoyable post.
massive skills mate , been playing now for about 9 months and if i could play like this one day i would be a millionare !!!!!!!!! thanks for the inspiration .
This is such a great rendition! Penguin Eggs is an amazing album, and Mr. Jones is quite an inspiration, but at the risk of blasphemy, I even like your vocal interpretation a little better than the recorded version. So good! Thanks for putting this up, along with the tips video, too! Big win!
Love this video, ur playing is brilliant, where abouts did you get the music for this? been looking for a proper transcript of this for a while, any chance you could point me in the right direction or send it to me?
Ahh thank you so much! Im performing this song in a folk group at my uni, this and your 'how to' video have been a godsend! Sorry i missed you at Sidmouth festival this year, will you be playing it again?
Wow. It's absolutely perfect. Great singing and playing. Such a shame there's no video footage of Nic banging about, but great to see footage of someone else doing Nic's arrangement such justice. Great job.
Hi Sam - Lovely stuff. At last we know what Nic Jones really did. It would be really nice if someone could get the lines to rhyme, but perhaps that is asking too much. If Dylan didn't, then I guess no-one can. Why do you wait to sing i-o after singing dee - Isn't English supposed to be smooth? Did you ever meet Dave Wood - he seems to come from near Sidmouth and plays a really beautiful local-made guitar. If you're interested, search for UK10: Dave Wood - Peggy Gordon. English + Guitar = True :)
Watched the Gareth Malone show on BBC last night, 'Shanties and Sea Songs', woke up this morning n a salty sweat, thirsting for something, remembered Dylan doing this on his 'Good As I Been to You' album, googled it and got you.
Sam, you are an unquestionable asset to the oral tradition and Nic Jones' legacy. Whilst nearly all 'copycat' covers put me in an awful mood, you have all the right intentions and technical skills to make this something very special. Many guitarists will be having a eureka moment after viewing this.
I'm very sad not to be attending Sidmouth this year. I was lucky enough to be doing FOH sound for the Peter Bellamy tribute last year, so I'm obviously dismayed to be missing the Nic Jones episode!
Absolutely fantastic. Although I've played his song for years -- the correct tuning, middle finger "thwack," etc. -- I've never quite been able to master Nic Jones's "rhythmic groove" as he plays the song. Your version nails it. Given your other YouTube explanation of the song, you should seriously consider making an instructional DVD of Nic's music. I guarantee there would be an audience for it. I tried years ago to find something, and the nearest I got was the tuning and "thwack."
Thanks for all the nice comments folks, I'm performing at the Nic Jones Tribute at Sidmouth Folk Week this year, along side Martin Simpson, Jim Moray and Jon Boden.
@samjohncarter Hi Sam, I've never heard anyone play this like Dad (NJ) before. I saw you at the concert at Sidmouth and when you started playing Barrack Street, I got a shiver!! It was awesome and I LOVED Ruins by the shore too. I didn't even realise Dad had written til then !!! How embarrassing. Anyway if you're ever playing in the Southwest again we'd love to come along for a listen. All best, Helen
I'm quite new to the folk scene so i've been listening to nic jones, kate rusby and a few others. After watching this ive just bought you album of itunes, fantastic fingerpicking and an all round great album. Will you ever come and play in the midlands?
Wow! Where have you been all my life. I learned this tune off the record too, about 15 years ago. My version never sounded quite right but I am not the guitarist you are (I have posted my version too). The tutorial is great too. I am going out to get a thumb pick and learn it the 'proper way'. Nic's work has found new life. Thank you!
Youve got an excellent ear to work out this complicated arrangement so perfectly, note-for-note. And I like the way you sing it too, like Nic did, but with your own touches and interpretation. Nic was a consumate guitarist and singer in his heyday and as you know, tragically his career was cut short.
But youre breathing life back into Nics old songs. I, for one, am very grateful you are. Id buy any CD of yours without hesitation. Are any available?
Hey dude, thanks a million for this and the other help video, great feeling of satisfaction playing this one! Cheers
