Great stuff. Oscar was just as phenomenal in the mid fifties, when he didn't even use a drummer. First, he went with Barney Kessel on guitar and, when Barney declined the road wear, turned to Herb Ellis. The made some incredible albums, but Herb took to the bottle, and that's when Oscar went to Ed Thigpen on drums to close out the fifties.
Actually, I had the privilege of seeing him twice. My only regret is that @ the time, I was a little too young to fully appreciate the experience. It was in the early 80's, I forget exactly when, but I was only like 9-11yrs old @ the time. 1st time was @ Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo, NY, 2nd was @ Art Park in Lewiston, NY (an outside concert venue). From the little I still remember, it was pretty amazing. BTW Blues Etude - The Trio, IMO, is the best version of this piece. My favorite!
In regards to Oscar Peterson, I have but 2 regrets. I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert, twice in my life time. Unfortunately, I was just too young to appreciate it. I fell asleep both times. It was in the early 80's & I was only between the ages of 9 & 11 years old. 1st time was in Kleinhans Music Hall (home of Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra) & the 2nd was at Art Park, a small out door concert arena. I would give almost anything to relive those events, but at my current age. :-(
Martin Drew has a great Touch ,smooth underrated, if at all player alot of drummers could learn alot about control of POWER here that these Three were displaying:THIS TAKES SOME DOIN... Hvy MEDAL ?
You aren't kidding about Martin Drew being underrated. The man is a true force of nature on the drums. I've watched several of the Buddy Rich tributes or other all-star drummer occassions and Martin is nowhere to be seen. I think Ed Thigpen went through the same thing - never acknowledging how great they were. As great as Peterson - Brown - Thigpen were, I think Peterson - NHOP - and Drew are my favorite jazz trio of all time.
@jimraw1 Sometimes I, wish Buddy was here to put things back in perspective so to speak ,as a true representative , whats goin on today is pretty strange w/ Drumming, except the Jazz guys etc. in my view .There are many Great players under the radar and in their own right and I ,say more power to them cause they're the real Thing...
This is amazing! There truly will never be another like OP. What a gift those of us who have been blessed with his talent. Not to overlook the support Pedersen and Drew put out. They are true talents.
does anybody know the correct track names of the berlin concert..it seems the track listing is incorrect in the DVd cover..and wat isthe 1st track in the concert
There's another version of this song called "Chicago Blues" (followed by "Blues Etude") on a Pablo record from the late 70's... Could someone post it on youtube ? They're really stratospheric here...
Actually, the "true" Blues Etude is in the album with the same name. That tune has a melody, but OP never recorded it again. His later performances of this tune were without the melody.
Yes, but I just found it again - the record is called "The Trio" - i think that they inverted the titles between "Chicago Blues" and "Blues Etude" on it. Thank you anyway
yet another in the line of great trios that Oscar had. NHOP's early demise was a tragic loss, for he was a monster bassist.

Weird I just realized that OP and NHOP have the same last name. It was destiny that they got together and made the best jazz of all time.
