There's a lot of weird animal cruelty in Ub Iwerks cartoons. Like Steamboat Willie and Flip the Blacksmith. It's always like really creative too. I'm glad they didn't censor themselves very much back then
Almost all the sound effects seem to have been made on the drum set. The drummer was Paul DeDroit. I wonder if Iwerks had any "overdubbing" capacity at all or if the music, effects, and dialogue was all added at the same time. (I know the early Fleischers were done the latter way, and sometimes contain minor flubs and missed cues that were evidentially not considered important enough to demand a whole fresh take.)
I agree, UB Iwerks created Mickey and from watching earlier cartoons like Plane Crazy, UB wanted to make edgier cartoons than what stodgy old Walt Disney liked. So he quit and formed his own studio where he was allowed to do what he wanted. EG make more interesting cartoons than Disney :)
I've been catching up on my reading and sleeping recently. My anthro class requires that I read a textbook (thankfully short ones) each week and in English class, we're reading Jane Eyre, and I take forever to read Victorian era novels.
