  • lol!! yes i think this is it!! this is were inpersonators got it it might of captured their attention scince bette was an american actress... and she sounds british, wich to them this line sounded cool??? lol any way you got a point this is kool i always had that dout my self thank you!!

  • @edia05 Although I'm not sure this is the key of the mystery, I'm glad you think it is...

  • Miss Davis must have forgotten that Dennis Morgan's character's name in the film, In This Our Life was called Peter. Maybe she blocked it out because she didn't like the film very much. I loved that movie. Nobody is better than Bette when she's bad.

  • This was fun! You did a great job.

  • I was thinking about Pete from The Great Lie! But it really would be interesting to know who started that line and where they got it from!

  • I first heard the "Peetah" impression by Jimmy Stewart on Dean Martin's show. But in an early Martin & Lewis picture, Jerry says "Philip!" instead.

Anywho, this theory does make sense :)

By the way, what's the music?! I feel like I've heard it before!

  • Yeah, I've heard Jimmy's impersonation too. The music is A Shot In The Dark by Henry Mancini, quite a famous theme. I've used it in some of my other videos, as well.

  • hahhahahaha This is TOTALLY AWESOME THANKS hahahaha LOVE IT

"Never in any film" Peetah haahaa i love the interview on here about this to

    Thanks Awesome video

  • Ummm...Sorry I can't find out clear answer.

In hollywood at the time, there were a lot of actors and actresses who had moved from Europe to United States. Since they were grown in non native English countries, the pronounce was not correct so much. But in at one time, such "About English" may be received as "Hollywood English".

Of course, probably another cause existed also, for exemple on herself.

Moreover I was amazed, you and lovers of her have watched very carefully her words and life..!

  • They always say : Peetah, Peetah, Peetah, 3-times in the row...

So there was just a short: Peter a letter.

That´s one of the big mystery's made from a fly to an elephant. Everyone makes jokes, but no truth behind it.

    Still kind of funny!

  • Oh my goodness Clementine, you've set me off! Lol! I've also wondered about this line and I came to the same conclusion as you! But have you ever seen 'In This Our Life'? We always think of George B as her leading man in that film but if you try hard, you'll remember that there's another man that Bette attatches herself to for a while and his name is PETER! And she most definately calls him PETER! So Bette is wrong when she says she's never played opposite a Peter! Great vid Clem! :)

  • She is a magnificent actress...

  • good video!

  • I love it!! Thanks for clearing this up. I have always looked for that line in her movies.

  • I too never understood where that line came from.I thought that it might have been from The Great Lie also but she never calls him Peter,if you watch the film, she only calls him Pete.I don't think there are any other Bette Davis films with a guy named Peter in it.Who knows?

  • There IS a Bette Davis film in which there is a Peter. "In This Our Life" (1942) - Dennis Morgan plays the man that Davis runs off with at the start of the film. His name is Peter and she calls him "Peetah", though not quite as pronounced as her impersonators =)

  • I'm sorry I've never heard of that peetah mystery. I agree with MissBetteDavisFan. Anyway I love the great lie, especially thanks to the great actresses that Bette and Mary Astor were. I like your video. You have a point ; I can't think of another movie...

  • I think a lot of these impersonaters give Bette's name a drag through the mud. She was a wonderful actress and a great human being and they make her out to be a selfish, spolied diva not to mention with the "Pettah's" a babbling fool.

However, it is good to see Bette taking that mocking and turn it into something funny.
