Although my GMAW produces a nicer and faster weld bead, you just can't best SMAW for the really thick ass steel plate!!! Stick welding rules!!!!

I don't care much for SMAW myself, but it's got much better portability than something like FCAW or GMAW. GTAW has pretty good portability, although it's not really that good for outdoor work.
