Most of the Armenians killed were probably killed by Ottoman Muslim civilians who were attacked by Ottoman Armenian insurgents and their Russian Armenian brethren. Hence they thought, these are Armenians, they are the same as those who attacked us, we should get them back. The Ottoman Armenians (those who sided with the Russians) betrayed their empire at a time of war, isn't that treason?
