@Liraxtime no doubt ;) but how many strings in this lyre ? it's hard to tell here. I was always told lyres were not meant as stand-alone instruments (unlike harps) because they lack the adequate number of strings...
@schwarzfalk This lyre has 35 strings, full chromatic scale. Most of arps are diatonic, with half tone levers/pedals. You may check my latest lyre video with 39 strings (Pensamiento Espanol / Jose Broca) and tell me if you still feel lyre is not suitable for stand-alone instruments.
@Liraxtime 35+ strings?!! ow...that's one helluva lyre you got there...more like a portable harp
the best we have over here, only 1 shop and they have a couple of lyres similar to yours, except the highest number of strings is 16 :( :( (and I doubt this here tune could be played with only 16 strings...in fact I doubt any decent tune could be played with 16 strings...)
Where did you find the lyre? I'm in Ireland and have been searching for one but have found absolutely nothing. Most music shops don't even know what one is. Any sources? I don't want a Pakistani one!
nice to video the lyre - but the tone can be better represented - how are you miking it?(I have played and recorded lyre over 37 years - your tone is distorting on youtube - try a Schertler pick up and pre amp for harp - best option so far for capturing the lyre sound)
This lyre has 2 layer of strings, one for right hand corresponding to white keys of piano, the other for left hand corresonding to black keys of piano.
It makes you easy to locate the strings/sounds, but some times very difficult to play music written for other instruments.
that's awesome! i don't know the song/piece but it sounds very nice. im thinking about learning to play the lyre so i was just browsing to try and get a basic idea of the sound of the instrument and how it's played. ur very good. ^_^
Sorry

@vehrkalia Thank you. Recording with mobile phone gives you only a half (or less than it?) of its real sound.

This music was just recorded by my mobile phone! So the sound quality was pessimistic.
I have no idea what is Schertler pick up and pre amp, but I will try to find it.
Are you a professional lyre player?

That was one of the most beautiful thing that I have ever heard. I can almoast hear en old celtic man recite a poem to that tune. So beautiful!
Is it hard to play, the lyre that you are playing?
blunkablaj 4 years ago
Thank you so much for your kind message.
I forgot to tell you that latter half of the piece is called "Carrick Fergus", not a O'Carolan's music, but one of Irish popular tunes.
I used mobile phone to record it, so the sound is very poor. Actual sound is clearer, like a drip of water from the heaven or twinkling of stars.
I hope you enjoy playing lyre soon :-)
