Freestyle means off the top. Period. Like what Black Thought is doing right here. It's an art form in itself, and MCs who can bring it should be respected. People have different meanings for it, but only one is the real meaning.
Anybody who says they're freestyling when it's a written are disrespecting all those MCs who come off the top, and diluting the word.
The freestyle we know today didn't always mean what it does today. Back in the day, a freestyle was a written rap that didn't make it to a track, just a loose, or "free" verse. Those that couldn't write, would just rhyme off the top and that was seen as worse than spitting a written (b/c off the top couldnt be criticized as hard)
freestyle doesnt mean off the top and never has. Kids today think it does thats another reason hip hop is dead. Rakim & Big Daddy Kane were considered Freestyle mcs back in the day. Check Rakims "Lyrics Of Fury" He says in the hook " A furified freestyle" & it was written.
