Because in the early 90's the music industry consolidated bands, pushed for more money, pressed artists to follow successful formulas (which never works, its art, duh!) basically acted like all other corporations at the time - and extinguished creative, exciting music on the airwaves. We've been living in a desolate music world ever since, with the few supertalented and savvy musicians that pop up once in a while.

When it actually aired on TV, there was a sense of discovery and "immediacy" to it. The experience feels more "alive" when it's actually being broadcast on a major TV station for others to share at the same time.
