  • 20 years ago today, as I write it is 21st September 2010. Time passes and PJP is still working and on tour. The single STAGE OF FOOLS and the subsequent CD Album 'THANKS' were effectively sabotaged by PJ himself who refused to promote them and even had lawyers attempt to halt distribution. At the time he was swigging copious amounts of Jack Daniels but there is no excuse for such disgraceful, ungrateful behaviour. Before this TV appearance he was a down and out close to death drunkard. Seriously

  • It was 20 years ago today that PJP and I filmed this for Granada TV in the North West of England. It was all about the release of his first internationally distributed record since he left EMI in the early 70s. The song playing in the background is STAGE OF FOOLS and it was released as a 12" single and on the CD Album 'THANKS'. Following this brief appearance on TV PJP received an offer to appear for a summer season at Blackpool. Granada made a documentary about this: PJ PROBABLY. Time Passes.

  • BOB GREAVES - NOT SADLY MISSED ON TV

  • Can someone tell me what maybe about his private life? If he is married and has children, or something similar? Vielen Dank and Greetings from Cologne

  • grizzlygalore, some people are so desperate to show they know a celebrity that they use no judgement whatsoever in throwing out "insider" information just to impress others. It's rather pathetic. John Sutton is credited with helping bring PJ back into the record shops after an absence of many years. But these "insiders" seem bent on turning a positive episode in his career into a negative one. Maybe PJ should record "Burning Bridges" and adopt it as his theme song.

  • Kendall and Grizzlygalore are aware that PJP and his gang of sychophantic bootlickers seem to enjoy telling the world what a total bastard that Sutton is. One night on stage he saw me in the audience and started shouting abuse instead of singing. I mean I only helped him find his voice again with a gentle slap and he's supposed to like fighting! What a laugh, must have made an impression as he tells anyone who asks how much he hates me. Without Stage of Fools, no TV, no Landsdowne Hotel no PJP

  • What a class act jgjman (John Sutton) is for his comment below. And what a shame that the site admin of the Official PJ Proby Forum saw fit to say recently that PJ Proby doesn't want to have anything to do with this man, with no reason given. Whatever the reasons for their differences, announcing the matter publicly in this way only diminishes the image of PJ Proby. You would think that after all these years someone in Proby's organisation would put a stop to these public relations blunders.

  • Oneniggertoanother, What the hell do you know...you can't even spell his name! Youve got an attitude problem & a foul mouth.JUST GO AWAY!

  • @rontenn The p j stands for pisshead,jackanory,this man drinks and lies for fun,never had a no1,what a waste of space,pisshead,jackanory,proby,its the truth ok.......

  • @ITSTHETRUTHOK Sorry you have mental health problems but deal with them yourself & don't bother us Proby fans with your nonense!

  • @ITSTHETRUTHOK Sorry you have mental health problems but deal with them yourself & don't bother us Proby fans with your nonsense!

  • I was the man behind this 'comeback' you can see me in the video with the beard. PJP was totally boozed up most of the time but when we went into the recording studio he was mind blowingly brilliant! Listen to him singing STAGE OF FOOLS he really went for it and as the writer of that song, about Jim Proby's wasted career, I was really pleased he could still do it. And he still can. If you read this Jim well done on quitting the Jack D. I recall a bottle a day way back then. John G. Sutton

  • Hi John To my mind the CD "Thanks" is highly under-rated & I love all the songs on the album.THANKS for the part you played in P.J.'s comeback.Blimey it's almost 20 years ago....doesn't time fly. Ron Tennant

  • Hi there, Grabar 20!

Do you want me to do a list of the 100 worst Elvis tracks ever - including Queenie Waheenie, There's Gold In The Mountains, My Wish Came True, Dominique, Big Boots, Five Sleepy Heads, Beach Shack and Smorgasboard - and have every decent musiclover roaring with laughter???

PJ Proby starved instead of selling himself to shit like that!

Don't get me wrong, Elvis was tremendous in his best moments, but PJ was - is - even better, and he NEVER EVER sold himself!

  • well said!

  • Do not forget that Elvis at the time of his dead was the most derised and mocked star ever!!! Still the standard for cool and talent? Not in the midsixties!!!

Give me just one good review of his records during the last 5 years of his life!

Try to be a little humble, just what you do to Proby now the wole world did to Elvis during most of his career. It hurt me at the time - always been an Elvis-fan. Stick to Elvis if you want to but stop kicking someone who has been kicked for 44 years now!!!

  • @Mickeslina The Elvis songs you listed are B sides or they're from his movies. They're no worse than many songs from other films made for young audiences back then. You can say Elvis sold himself but he never expected government support while refusing to do poor songs or films he didn't like. High standards come easy when somebody else is paying and if PJ Proby starved he was spending his food money on liquor.

Elvis has his critics but he'll always be known as the real deal. PJ Proby will not.

  • 2½ minute of talking about things that we already knew, but EVERY new filmed second with Jim is worth more than gold!

Please stop it, Elvis-fan! Your hero is the most documented persona in pophistory, and therefore we know everything about all his crapmovies and the terrible soundtracks that followed! PJ may not always have been on top during his career, but Elvis certainly hit the bottom several times! ("Old McDonald...")

Besides...why do Elvis in the seventies sound like Proby did 1965?

  • Elvis is dead and P.J. Proby is very much alive!

It takes a strong character to survive!

PJ Proby can sing Elvis. And Gene Pitney, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison etc. In fact the-man-with-the-thousand-voices can sing anybody he wants. But Elvis could never have sung like Proby can! Sorry to disappoint you....

    Manja

  • I couldnt agree with you more manja !!

how many artists are there that can change there vocal style like PJ. I honestly can't think of anybody at all.

Im also a big elvis fan but PJ is the better singer of the two no question about it.

could elvis sing a song right through in falseto or sing soul music like PJ.. NO WAY

  • I dont think Elvis and the Colonel would have had so many demos done by proby if they did not think something about him.

PJ did the demos with elvis's musicians and over recent years PJ has done gigs with Glen D. Hardin and James Burton check out the proby website for pictures of events.

PJ gave up drinking in 1992 following a heart scare.

  • @grabar20 Good one you brainless Troll.

  • once again thanks for posting this, not seen it before,he can be wild with me any time ,just LOVE him

  • i have all show and more of the interview on dvd, also met john sutton in this clip recently as well. he gave me some great PJ stuff including a copy of the stage of fools demo outtakes which im very proud to have .theres only 250 copies that john will be releasing so its a real collectors item.

in my opinion PJ is THE BEST SINGER EVER.

  • So good to see the man with the golden voice smiling! Despite the wobbly legs he still cuts a dashing figure too! Thanks for this jimproby - never get tired of listening to the Legend! x

  • Oh Yes! I have a copy of this on a DVD that was kindly sent to me years ago but there was more to it. This clip is of much better quality than what I have. Great to see it again.

    Cheers for P.J.
