Such harmony....pure beauty of music. I was a little girl and listened to my Dad play these records, The Harmonizing Four, Swanee Quintet, The Five Blind Boys..thank you for bringing back those memories for me and everyone that loves great gospel groups like this. In particular, this arrangement sounds a lot like the old railrod chants I've seen and heard bits of...when the men would chant in rhythm to pushing the track ties together...I wish I could find some of that too.

in the sam cooke story book, sam cooke brother said sam would sometimes cry along with other groups that were present when archie brown lee sung. they said he would sometimes leap off the stage and just tare the crowd up.
@gospellin This might just be one of the best performances I've ever seen. How could I get hold of the full 4hrs? Was this a local tv show? Early 50's? Excuse my ignorance, I'm just blown away by this.
@YTRonzoni Greetings, I can appreciate your frustation in finding some info on "Big Henry" I do have a recording by him after he left the Blind Boys and was with another group. If I can find it I'll post the song. You may try going to Gloryland Gospel website it''s devoted to quartet music and it's very informative and gives you an opportunity to ask questions about an artist. You'll find some true quartet historians participating.Good luck!
@bellejohnson I'm so honored to get reply from you. Of course I know you and you have blessed voice on YouTube.
I know he has already passed away. And I have already heard all of Big Henry's vioce as a member of Mississippi, Starlight quintette, and L.A. Harps of Joy.
But I would like to heard much more voice of Big Henry if any. His song is the great piece of gospel history! Everybody has to know him like Archie Brownlee.
I hope I can get much more information about Big Henry in the future.
@YTRonzoni Hey well what people don't know is that before my dad was ever in la harps of joy he was in a great group called the Inspirational souls and where he and lil rev. were lead singers of the group my dad was in that group for most of my childhood la harps of joy came towards the end of his life really.
@bellejohnson I really appreciate for information. It is difficult for me to think why great singer Big Henry has had from hop group to group. His talent should be much praised! I will continue reserching his history as historical singer.
It is no enough that Big Henry is regarded only as third singer of Mississippi!
other great groups are the Fairfield Four, The Spirit of Memphis and The Selah Jubilee Singers...I just wish there was more video footage of these amazing harmony singing groups :)
In my opinion, the Blind Boys of Mississippi crushed them all. Archie Brownlee was just unbelievable. Nobody wanted to follow him. Henry Johnson was great, too and a perfect replacement for the late Archie. I'm a big Soul Stirrers fan and absolutely love Sam Cooke, Jimmy Outler and RH Harris. But Archie and the Blind Boys of Mississippi just take my breath away. I must say that I have never really cared for the Blind Boys of Alabama. Just personal preference, of course.
Hi Gospellin, I'm far from saying who's the best gospel groups of all time. The Blind Boys of Alabama were great, of Mississippi too, the Soul Stirrers and the Swan Silvertones also. There's one point for me: They all are underrated until today. Take this video clip of "Everlasting Arms". The girl singers on the right are so overhelmed too, they applaude, and in a version of it, which I have, you can see on their faces, how thrilled they are. They were right. All my best, Chris, from Germany
I'm collecting music on vhs and record and CDs since 1975 now blues, gospel, rock'n'roll, country. Please forgive me, why don't people hear and see, that this group was a world wonder and this recording is one of the most astonishing and greatest you'll ever hear, you 6 or so billion on this planet? Chris Ebner from the midst of Europe (Witten, Germany)
Hi Chris, thanks for your comments. As an African-american who has been involved with this music since 1957, I understand your feelings about the blind boys, They were an excellent group however you must bear in mind, that is your opinion and not eveeryone feels the same way. There are those who feel the Soul Stirrers were the best and others say the blind Boys of alabama. While others say the Swan Silvertones so it's really a matter of personal preference.
@you know when God gave out talent he said make an joyful noise unto the lord and with that in mind when we do unto God there is no room or such a thing as whom is better because when God look at us he see his children in whom he love all the same
@gospellin they couldn't hold a candle to my dad they all wanted big henry johnso in their group; however i feel that they were all different kinds of groups some had to do more because they had less talent. i can say blind boys have proven to be the best even in todays time
I purchased a vhs off of ebay several years ago. It was a 4 hr video called Best of Quartets. They were clips taken from a show called tv gospel time, Now some of the tv gospel time shows have been released on dvd with a cd enclosed. It's called Experience Gospel and it's a series of them. I got mine last year at Walmart
I believe someone named Archie had several great videos on here but his account was closed. I did the best I could with this post, and to me the audio is ok considering you're capturing off a tv
yes i apprecieate your effort. Do you know where this can be purchased? I really like the lead singer of this group but dont know much about him or his name or anything...thanks
His name is "Big Henry" and I'm not at home right now so I can't give you his last name. I got the DVD from Walmart in a series of cd's called Experience Gospel and inside the cd pkg was a dvd.
Guess I need to find this CD. I am not fond of contemporary gospel music at all. I don't knock anyone for listening to it, but it does absolutely nothing for my spirit. I love the gospel of old. My soul is old but my age is young.
This is great.

The name of this song seems to be 'Leaning on Jesus'.
'Leaning On The Everlasting Arms' is the song by FBBOM feat Archie Brownlee.

I cannot understand there is little information
about Mr. Big Henry Johnson even in this internet era.
There is no item about him yet in wikipedia currently.
I believe Mr. Henry Johnson is one of the greatest singer
of gospel history.

We now live in sad times......The art of singing is dead.

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's dead. You hae some great quartet singers out here now. Swanee Quintet, Lee Williams & Spiritual QC's and others.
