My 1st car was a datsun 120y bask 20years ago. It was 16years old when I bought it for a mizly $1800. She was in mint condition $7 to get to Brisbane, witch was 350kms away from where I lived.... She was a great little machine,, but my brother and he's dum-ass idiot friend stole it & freeking rolled it in a ditch! Still got $1000 for it as the all running gear, engin (26000kms) on the clock was perfect. Long live the 120Y
datsun 120y was my first car!! it was an orange 3 speed auto that topped out at 140kmph, after i took the air filter off it did 145 hahaha great memories!!
@danielsalex2 If you really wanted one, you could probably find one in Australia; there are still quite a few of them, in various states of repair. Two things you should be warned about:
1. Structural strength. I used to work in a wrecking yard. We had one of these with the arse stoved in. The fold went bast the rear window, but the glass was intact.
@datsunking You do realise that the engine that powers this was a design bought by Nissan/Datsun from Austin. It used to power the A40. All Nissan's engineers changed was make it an alloy head, and put a Japanese downdraught carby on it
@Mechknight73 2. Engine. The engine that normally powers the 120Y is a slightly modified version of what hides under the bonnet of a 1948 Austin A40. Other than making it an alloy head, and put a dual throat carburettor on it, they did nothing. The good news is, Nissan/Datsun also bought the engine design for the Leyland Marina. These engines will fit in a pinch. Just remember to fit it with a rollcage
It has a new (cast iron) head that is un-siamesed, non-crossflow (and oiltight), and it has a seven bearing crankshaft.
The then current BL A series was cross-flow, siamesed, with only a five bearing crankshaft. The BL unit had better volumetric efficiency, but couldn't spin as fast beacuse the crankshaft was whippier than the Datsun, and it used more fuel.
BTW, there si NO WAY that a standard 120Y would beat any of those cars.
The engine and the gearbox are the best part of the car.
Yes, the 120Y had disc brakes, but they were _unassisted_, so they were actual much worse than the drum brakes on other cars, kind of like the brakes on a grey Massey tractor.
The Stig would have ended up in the paddock on the first turn.
The 120Y featured would have a 1.4L Sunny motor with a hard cam, Sunny disc brakes, 13" wheels, and harder springs _at least_.
@lkPractical90 Not to mention unventilated too. If every you actually wanted to drive a beercan, this would be the way to do it. Structurally, they're a frightening thing to behold in Australia.
