Say whatever you want but using a rag just to avoid any unwanted open string ringing seems as someone who's not willing to do the extra mile with the exercises to get their technique perfect. Seriously, I've watched alot of the greats' in-studio footage and never seen someone using such a method besides Batio who has his own string-dampener but his use is that it permits him to play legato without picking the strings..

Marty Friedman actually admitted to Putting tape over the strings to mute them when in the studio. I agree with you for the most part, but in a studio environment I'm sure a lot of artists just want to capture perfection on the record. HOWEVER in a live environment i'm with you 100%

@marlowetravers its more or less used to give a different feeling to the song i mean alot of tones can be used in a some what taunt cloth over the strings. i think it also has somethign to do with helping the neck pickup have a more smooth sound also.. as it also helps kill all unwanted sound... good for soloing and shreading.. just won't sound the same when you wanna sound heavy with an open chord. it kills the sound... hope it helped

the rag is used to mute the other strings. palm muting wouldnt work since it would dampen the string that he is playing too. its a technique commonly used in recording, but not live because it prevents you from being able to play open strings. however, you can see tapping guitarists such as adam fulara almost always have something damping their strings like that.

@TheBigMclargehuge It is more difficult to acquire the sound most bands want when they track playing together. There is a huge amount of stuff that goes on after getting good recordings of the song. The mixing engineers are quite literally part of the band usually.
