The problem with your demos is that you're too good a keyboard player!
What I mean is that, like a good pianist who can make good music even on a bad piano, you can make any synth sound good because you are an amazing player and improviser.
I'm convinced that you would be able to do a good demo with a crappy Casio.
So, unfortunately, I cannot appreciate the intrinsic qualities, or lack of, of the synths you're playing...
@freezazoid Offhand I don't know the answer to that, and don't have my P08 set up right now. It seems to me that you either have it in 1) eight-voice poly mode, 2) eight-voice stacked mode (four note polyphony with two simultaneous patches), or 3) unison mode (eight voices on a single note). But I could be mistaken.
@keybdwizrd : that seems to make sense. I might be wrong, but the Korg mono/poly seems like you could run anything from 1-4 voices. Cool little synth. I just bid on a Jupiter-6 though! hope to make a vid soon. Thanks for the info
@keybdwizrd No, I think you're right....That's all I've been able to get....Although in stacked mode, I believe you can have one layer with 4-voice unison and have 4-voice polyphony in the second layer....Not sure though...I will have to mess with mine today ~_^
@keybdwizrd That's how I understand it. What I find confusing is that a few of the Preset programs activate 2 voices at the same time. I don't know how to build that into a new patch. I've been looking on the forums with no luck.
I have a poly evolver and it seems to be a bit more complex... I am not sure but I am interested in a prophet 08 BIGTIME. Do you think it would be overkill to have both? Do you also have a minimoog as well? I thought you had one in a vid a ways back? I am looking at the voyager too so if you have any info or time I Greatly Appreciate your help. Ah the benifits of college loans LOL Thanx for your time and vids...Peace to you *_*
Thanx for getting back to me K.B.W. I figured I would try you first because you know your stuff very well. What is your overall experience so far with the prophet 08 and would you recommend it to a synth lover? It is on my list but I am at a fork in the road in between this, the Virus TI2 and the Moog Voyager. Thanx for your time...
The three synths you mention are all very, very different, completely apples and oranges and all that.
The Prophet 08 is perfect for someone who is looking for a polyphonic analog synth with modern conveniences (patch memory, MIDI). It makes all of those classic analog sounds of yesteryear. That said, analog synths are fundamentally less flexible than digital synths, so the Virus TI is capable of a much wider range of sounds.
You Rock! Thanx for getting back to me so soon :) I guess I will have to get both hahaha. Love your vids man.... keep rolling and thanx for your time....Peace
ahh how dare you play such orgasmic sounds! this video should be flagged! Seriously though that Tarkus sound - felt exactly like ELP. Wish I could afford one of these, does anyone know a good alternativ,e for maybe a half or third the price?
Check out the Mopho made by Dave Smith instruments same guy that made the prophet it's a desktop analog which I believe is supposed to be a one voice version of the prophet for about a third the price.
I want one! But what's it like for big Vangelis style strings? Can it do those old string synth type sounds? It sounds a little to uniform to me. I like those synth string sounds that drift about a bit & have acres of character. Check out some Youtube vids of the Roland RS-505 to hear what I'm talking about.
Actually I've just seen anothe video demo of the 08 & the guy used something called the 'slop' function. This would seem to go someway to helping create this sound.
Very interesting! I got to have a new synth as my old one doesn´t inspire me anymore (that old one among 25 or so .....) It would be very nice if I could ask you some precise questions about the Prophet.
I don't claim to be an expert, but can try to answer anything. FYI, there's a keyboard forum at the Harmony Central website where lots of Prophet 08 owners hang out. Might be worthwhile to post questions on a forum like that where you can get input from multiple people.
Very capable keyboard indeed. I'm a guitarist but I'd love one of these to tweak on. Nice analog and digital palates...I think this could emulate some really classic sounds.
that's a goodun.. I watched a few on this synth.. What would you do if al the capacitors started to pop like popcorn and mini black holes started appearing before your eyes. :P
Can the Prophet 08 achieve the warm breathy attack string/horn pad sound Richard Tandy used on ELO's "Telephone Line" (especially noticable in beginning of song in the 2 chords just after the burst of siney arpeggio that opens the song) ...?? I've been chasing that sound for a long time...
I really like the part at 3.10, you have a nice tendency to play fast arpegio's, like it.
I am thinking of buying a dave smith prophet or a clavia nord wave to use live on my trance performances (been using vst's until now, mostly with Vanguard in Cubase), but after seeing your vids i think it's going to be the prophet, it just seems to have a more natural feel to it.
No, DCOs not sampled waveforms: 2 digitally controlled analog oscillators (DCOs) per voice with selectable sawtooth, triangle, saw/triangle mix, and pulse waves (with pulse-width modulation), and hard sync.
WHY do people keep giving thumbs down to comments they don't agree on???
That's terrible! The point of the thumbs down is to get rid of flaming, innappropiate language, spam and blank comments; not for censoring those you dislike!
The thumbs up and thumbs down are all a matter of opinion. When you get a lot of thumbs down, people just simply don't agree with you. That's the way it is, accept it.
OK, I agree with you that, in general, that *should* be the purpose of thumbs up/down. My only big complain is that here, in practice, that translates into the censoring (because youtube temporarily blocks those comments) of the opinions we disagree on (and that's terrible). But yes, that's a problem with the way youtube is programmed.

I don't want to agree with TR0jAX and get 3 thumbs down(!), but (while excellently played - this is not in question, Wiz!) the sound of the soft-synth 'Native Instruments Pro-53' has if not better, certainly more interesting pre-sets.
I don't know my terminology well enough to describe the sounds in Pro-53. Many of the sounds have a filter-based movement in them that these demos don't seem to do, which I thought was the point of the Prophet 5. Is that something that this synth doesn't do!?
That's what they're called.. filter-envelopes! It's the filter envelopes all over everything that I always associate with sounds on Native Instruments Pro-53.
So does the Prophet '08 filter-envelope not feature so heavily on it's pre-sets?

The prophet 08 has a "slop" setting wich quite litteraly makes the oscillators sloppier, wich gives them some more of that drifty sound.

How does this stand up against the A6 (besides polyphony wise)?

the a6 has 16 voices, this one eight. But the p8 is better sounding in my opinion, not as great as the p5, but hey you can´t have everything ;)
