My mom ALWAYS bought these for me and my sisters when we were little. I haven't had them in YEARS. Perhaps I should pick some up, the next time I go to the grocery store. : )
Not too often you see a commercial for something that the company doesn't produce (Banana Newtons)...but the Blueberry ones were great, can't believe they replaced them with Raspberry (the Strawberry are good though)
It's true, there was an article about Fig Newtons, and the FDA allows up to 13 wasp heads per 100 grams of fig paste. That's not to say that this is the only thing that has bugs in it, apparently most of our food does, but Fig Newtons were the topic recently. I checked it out with the FDA as well so it's true. Apparently, the wasps live in the figs and it's impossible to get them out. But yes, other foods we eat everyday, also have bugs.
Now that I have more time, I might add that just about everything you eat isn't free of contaminants. The FDA actually has guidelines for the acceptible amount of things like rat feces that can be in frozen pizza, or how much hair is acceptible in hamburger meat. You already eat a pound of insects a year and don't know it. I doubt wasps are in the Newtons recipe, but how could they not get into something like that, just like the tiny spiders that are impossible to rinse out of blackberries? ...
... Enjoy your all-water diet, microbes and all, and sleep soundly at night with all those mites in your mouth. Before spreading Chicken Little-like ill-informed panic, do a little research and be informed, not ignorant. A 10-second Google search brought me several good articles on the topic. You might start at SixWise[dot]com (search the site for "insect parts"; source material is listed at the bottom of each article, including the FDA publication). Knowlege is power! Peace.
