During 'flight or fight' situations the human senses become more sensitive to stimuli. This is what allowed the partial perception of the light display. Time only alters when an object has a momentum near the spead of light relative to a 'stationary' observer. The moving object is un aware of this change in time untill a comparison is made between the observer and the moving object (twin paradox).
I think the reason that time slows down is that the human who is experiancing a life-death situation has a large quantity of adreneline is released into the bloodstream becuase of the extremeness of the situation eventually reaching the brain, altering the brains perception of time. Very simple.
