@ilovemusic121296 I would love to see Lydia a couple of years down the road when Wickman won't touch her but has taken up with 3 or 4 more younger women......that my friend is called Karma.
@mrspopp123 Mrs. Gardiner thought that after Lizzy told Darcy about Lydia's mistake, Mr. Darcy told Lizzy that he will take care of the whole matter. Mrs. Gardiner thought this because she thought that Mr. Darcy has confessed his love (again) and Lizzy said that she loves him too and this way she was brave enough to tell Darcy about Lydia. Hope I could be of help to you! (I truly recommend the book, it explains most things and it is written brilliantly!!!)
@rasta13820 How does one get literature "wrong"? Isn't it usually open to interpretation? Dependent upon the reader's personal experiences, understanding, etc.? I mean, look how many times the book has been "interpreted" in films. Just because someone doesn't share your interpretation of an author's work doesn't mean that they're wrong. To me, that's the beauty of literature...
@mikkijeanee08 If I thought that P&P was a story of an obsessed captain bent on hunting and killing a great white whale, that's not an interpretation but a delusion. If JA could have written what the viewer interpreted please show chapter and verse. Some of the “interpretations” that we see of P&P on the screen are delusions. To take a light comedy of manners that JA wrote and change it into a romantic melodrama of Bronte is interpretation of the worst sort and an insult to the author.
@rasta13820 Well, I'm going to be brief because I can feel there is no profit in this conversation for me judging by your post. Unless you've had the distinct pleasure of publishing an article or book for public consumption and felt the exhilaration of various forms of feedback...some in the manner of which you intended...some who have taken your work to another level and have enriched their lives because of it...then you know the essence of what I was trying to convey.
“You shall not, for the sake of one individual, change the meaning of principle and integrity, nor endeavour to persuade yourself or me that selfishness is prudence, and insensibility of danger, security for happiness.'' Chap 24
@rasta13820 Or...if you've never taught literature in a post-secondary institution and sought to expand minds using literature as a basis, again my meaning would be foreign to you. Perhaps the more "extreme" observation was coming from a mind I wouldn't necessarily seek out to exchange ideas, however I still respect a person's right to do. This is all I have to offer on the matter. Regards...
"Oh hold your tongue girl! Who asked you?" Gosh! I wonder how often I heard that as a child! Too often I guess! To Nouranmosaad97, forgive me, but Mrs Gardiner is Mrs Bennett's sister-in-law,not her blood sister. (in case you maybe thought she was?)
@Morna777 I know! I love Austen too but I don't know why there are so many comments of people wishing they lived there. I think Austen's books are the perfect example of WHY we shouldn't want to live there---things rarely turned out as well as in her novels.
is it just me or someone else sees the problem as well, why does it strike me that Wickham is limp with his walking stick? An uncommon injury for such a nice "horseman" after riding?
Wickham rides his horse with such skill and control. Darcy and Bingley could never match him in horsemanship. Check out the other episodes and compare. Darcy and Bingley are struggling to stay on or are seen listing to one side. Wickham is sure to ride Lydia with the same aplomb and vigor as he has shown here. What a lucky girl.
@Loveydvy99 Although your analysis seems perfectly reasonable, I am not so sure that Mr. Bennet is being sarcastic. If you recall from the book, at one point he says to Elizabeth, "I admire all my three sons-in-law highly. Wickham, perhaps, is my favourite; but I think I shall like your husband quite as well as Jane's." Unless I am missing something, it sounds to me like he really does like Wickham, though I cannot understand why.
@RubiRdz I believe in the book, when he speaks of the three, there is an explanation of why he "likes" them. Of Mr. Bingley he says that because of his easy going nature (along with his daughter) that they will be taken advantage of by every tradesman. Oh as I am typing the father says of Wickham " He simpers and smirks and makes love to us all. I'm prodigiously proud of him, I defy Sir Lucas to produce such a son in law." He indeed is being sarcastic. Not even Mr. Collins tops him. IMO
@RubiRdz Mr Bennet likes Wickham because he (Mr Bennet) has developed a habit of being amused by stupidity...that was how he managed to put up with Mrs Bennet all this time.
There's much of Mrs. Gardiner letter to Lizzy that's been omitted and hence some of the questions here about Wickham's motivation. Left out were the whole timeline of Darcy's search, Lidia's behavior while in Cheapside and her wedding, and her personal opinions of Darcy & Pemberly playfully given to Lizzy. There were other scenes in the book between Lizzy and Mrs. Gardiner (with full dialogues) that would have added more richness to the characters if they were included. So do read the book.
@Nouranmosaad97 He's being sarcastic. Mr. Bennet's next line says that he doubts "even Sir William Lucas could produce such a son in law." Sir William Lucas' son in law is Mr. Collins! It's Mr. Bennet's round about way of saying both he and his neighbor have extremely embarrassing relations now.
@Nouranmosaad97 Not a problem. I originally read the book when I was 12 or so and didn't get what the big deal was about. After reading it again a few years later I realized how much humor I missed! It's all wrapped up in clever language and definitely requires a second read (or watch!) to get all the jokes. I'm the same way with Shakespeare, I never liked reading his works, but seeing them performed made me understand just what the hell was going on (and how perverted he was...)
@Loveydvy99 hahahahaha xD I read the book a lot of times and didnt get most of the humors there.. After I watched the film I understood all but one: I couldnt get the point of Mr. Bennett calling Wikham a fine fellow until yu cleared it out for me xD I love Shakespeare too lol xD But I must admit that I love watching his plays more lol xD I feel that when words are put into acting, they show a great more deal of things people didnt understand while reading xD
"Oh come, Mr.Wickham, we are brother and sister, you know... "
After he kisses her hand, she stomps off! How dramatic. And perfect. (:
"He's as fine a fellow as ever I saw! He simpers and smirks and makes love to us all."
You know, it heartens me to think Kitty grows up improved, and I honestly think that she does grow up, and her throwing the bonnet signifies the frustration we all feel with confronting guilt inside ourselves.
Lydia is just like her mother. Her mother is to blame for how Lydia turned out. Lydia is a teenage fool that happens to have all her hormones intact. The very sad part of this that she will find out soon enough as to how much her husband loves her. HA. And Wickham might have gotten away with this but never again. Lydia's mother or not. The father will never again pay off his depts or Mr. Darcy be played upon. And he's lost any decent person's respect. I just feel sorry for the babies.
@nsb5Q322 This is the last time he will have the opportunity to impress the realitives and after what Lizzie said, he knows he's been found out. Lydia thinks she's not going to have all this time but I give it two months before she's writing home, crying because her husband's out every night! And six that she begs to come home. Pregnant probably. W was fishing and found out Lizzie knew all so he went for the, "feel sorry for me" bit and that didn't work either. RAT!
"... And how should you have liked making sermons? (Wickham wafles) ... I did hear there was a time when sermon making was not so palatable to you, as it seems to be at present. that you actually declared a notion of NEVER taking orders and were compensated accordingly..." IN OTHER WORDS

@WingCommanderVinyaya She's a child who thinks she "won" because she got married first. The prize that her mother ingrained into her. And she will suffer for it. You know, I like that this aunt and uncle face Mr. Darcy together. In a time when men usually dealt with "business" these two were friends and Mr. Darcy respected it. Says something about what his own marriage will be like.
@mc0558 Jane and Elizabeth turned out so well and polite and Kitty followed Lydia's lead so she was a brat until Lydia left and then she calmed down and then Mary was alone because Jane and Elizabeth had each other, Lydia and Kitty had each other, and Mary was alone. It's odd how differently all the daughters grew up to be but Lydia is most DEFINITELY the worst haha but you are right, the mother and father are the reasons the kids are the way they are.
@ahsawlap I have three grandkids. The eldest, a girl,is very athletic. She's a good student but more interested in her social life than academics. Still she does well. The eldest boy is also a very good athlete and also a serious, ambitious student. He passed his 11+ and Common Entrance and was accepted by all the schools he applied to.Then there is the youngest - 4 years old - who reads and writes in French and English. He is completely absorbed by anything technical. Conclusion: it's all genes!
@ahsawlap It's the way the genes combine. The ordinary parents who have 5 ordinary kids and 1 of them is extraordinarily beautiful (I know one --the beautiful won had a career as a model and actor. Conversely, Einstein and his wife, both very smart, had one smart son and one, mentally handicapped. We are upper range of normal and have this one child who is gifted. It's accidental. Thus, the Bennetts have these 5 children, one of whom is very different from both the mother and the father.
No. I have ADHD, which is on the autistic spectrum, which Asperger's Syndrome. What I'm trying to say that a lot of people who are disabled or eccentric or have a mental disorder, are often extremely gifted at something; like Einstein with Asperger's.
@WingCommanderVinyaya No reason for asking. Yes, I agree with you. However, I don't think ADHD is very serious. I know two girls who were diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. They had the right therapies; both ended up with a Masters in educational psychology from Columbia University. They took ritalin but went off before exams. They found it helped their preparation but interfered with their performance on the exam itself.
Mmm.. it can be serious, it depends. 5/5 people in my family are, but we're all on Ritalin and Concerta. We find we can't do ANYTHING without it. Well, not properly anyway.Thankfully, I only have to deal with it and competitive deafness instead of dyslexia.
@FantasyGirl177 Consider the time period though. Our view of beauty is different from how people living in Jane Austen's would have been - fairer, more earnest-looking, and plumper girls would probably have been considered far prettier than tall, thin, Keira Knightley types. Of course, to each his own, but for the most part that's how it would have gone.
if anyone noticed, Wickham is eyeing Elizabeth all the time while he and Lydia are saying their goodbye's in front of the carriage. Pay close attention and you''ll notice it. What a 'priceless' brother-in-law!!!
I can't really understand how Mr Bennett could greet Mr Wickham with such hospitality! If I was Mr Bennett I would beat the sh*& out of Mr Wickham the moment he stepped out of the carriage!
i love the conversation with Lizzy and Wickham. Elizabeth's wit and sarcasm are priceless :) It doesn't hurt that's he's being called out on his bs either :)
Lol Lydia treats her mother and the like crap thinking she's all high and mighty just because she's 'married.' And Mrs. Benett just takes every disrespectful remark with a kiss and a smile! That would so not happen in real life ;D
i believe the more sensible members of the Bennet family would have liked to invest in a pair of thick, fluffy earmuffs so they don't have to hear Mrs. Bennet's and Lydia's nonsense.
@yusrafication They put them like that in order to dry them. There are medicine plants used for teas or plants like dill, parsley, a.s.o. which they dry and use them during winter.
I loved Aunt and Uncle Gardner so much! Such sober, thoughtful, perceptive and pleasant people. Such a nice contrast to Mrs. Bennet's vapours! So many lovely details in this production--the girls are in the same two or three dresses (as indeed I was as a girl, because we had yet to have cheap clothes to buy off the rack), the inexpensive "best" jewelry the girls wear (two good but moderately priced garnet crosses). Such a careful production.
Just Love how Lizzie burns Wickham. "I did hear that sermon making was not so palatable to you ... That you actually declared your resolution of never taking orders..." Thats right you shmuck Wickham. Go live your life with Lydia. You deserve her.
I have to smile at 7:01 where Kitty is making hats..she's trying her hand at being a responsible young lady and not a ditz. Yay! She'll turn out right in the end.
Does anyone know what rase it is for the horses, in alla theese movies? I meen the black ones who allways pull the carriages? Those horses are so beautiful! :)
How is Wickham not embarassed? he's acting so natural and then to call Lizzy "sister" and ask for a walk? pshh wow if I were him I'd walk around with a bag over my head and never speak again.
i always knew wickham was a bastard, but lydia, she is a complete little female dog!!! she is soo anoying thinking every body envies her, nobody wants to be her!! except maybe her mother!
i wish they would show what happened to lydia and the way she was treated once no one was watching them how big was her house and stuff like that oh how i wish to see her suffer
@WildGiggleGirl But Lizzy get the better of any argument. Darcy, Lady Catherine even Collind--she is one of those people who rise to any challenge, as she told Darcy over the piano at Lady Catherine's.
omg mrs bennet and lydia are pretty much 19th century versions of my mom and my little sister! mrs bennet comlains about all these aches and pains, and my sister is probably the silliest, loudest and most idiotic girl that i know. luckily i have a best friend who is exactly like jane, and sadly i know a guy exactly like wickham. EXACTLY LIKE WICKHAM.
I hope your sister grows out of it though, you should spend lots of time with her so she can benefit from your example! Anyway, I doubt she can be as silly and stupid as Lydia, who is just the Queen of Siliy and Stupid.
@bchan89 Wickham wasn't "going after Lizzie". He just wanted to find out what Lizzie might know about him after having been to Pemberly. "Oh, come Mr. Wickham, we are brother and sister now. Let us not quarral about the past." Implied, " I know it all".
This Lydia is no where near as annoying as the the one in the '79 version, yikes!

mc0558 11 months ago
@mc0558
No. I have ADHD, which is on the autistic spectrum, which Asperger's Syndrome. What I'm trying to say that a lot of people who are disabled or eccentric or have a mental disorder, are often extremely gifted at something; like Einstein with Asperger's.
Why do you ask?
WingCommanderVinyaya 11 months ago
@WingCommanderVinyaya No reason for asking. Yes, I agree with you. However, I don't think ADHD is very serious. I know two girls who were diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. They had the right therapies; both ended up with a Masters in educational psychology from Columbia University. They took ritalin but went off before exams. They found it helped their preparation but interfered with their performance on the exam itself.
Good luck to you Wing Commander!
mc0558 11 months ago
@mc0558
Mmm.. it can be serious, it depends. 5/5 people in my family are, but we're all on Ritalin and Concerta. We find we can't do ANYTHING without it. Well, not properly anyway.Thankfully, I only have to deal with it and competitive deafness instead of dyslexia.
Thanks!

EXACTLY LIKE WICKHAM.
