@karanmaxfilms wow the classic justin bieber insult, i hope your proud man. and Jake Lamotta is very complex, he is a man who struggles with fear and anger in and out of the ring, but whats complex is how when your watching the movie, martin scorsese never makes a sympathetic character out of him, nor does he let you condone jake lamotta's acts, he puts the audience in a difficult ground where you follow this character and understand him, BUT NEVER forgive him or feel bad for him. thats TALENT.
@karanmaxfilms dude, james cameron is not as complex a filmmaker as scorsese period. anyone can biuld fancy motion capture shit and remake dances with wolves. only a few directors could ever create a character study as deep as raging bull, james cameron certianly can't. scorses is probably the only man in the world who could make a established first person chracter study like taxi driver. i will agree magnolia/there will be blood is better than anything almost any director has done. I heard Cameron was quoted saying, "Avatar, was his "Star Wars." I want to know if this picture was infact James Cameron's from an up and coming filmmaker's stand point, to making the highest grossing film of all time, was the movie he had always dreamed of making? And why go PG-13, Jim? Your "R" rated work paid off to get you to where you are today. Why not "Aliens" or "Terminator 2" violence for "Avatar?"
note the use of the words James Cameron uses: "industrialized society"
Ted Kasczynski's manifesto is about exactly the same thing, if only he had chosen a non violent approach, Kasczynski AKA the Unabomber, would have been a hero, not a villain.
I wonder if his dad tied him to a bed and electro shocked him and injected him with LSD and tortured him and stuff. Did charlie rose ask mr. cameron if that happened to him?
If Avatars subject matter interests you then I suggest the following books: Ishmael by Daniel Quinn, Endgame by Derrick Jensen, Columbus and other Cannibals by Jack Forbes... other books by those authors as well touch on the struggle between civilized people and tribes and why that struggle exists.
Look Avatar will go down in history as a groundbreaking film whether we like it or not, I mean it has made over 730 milion in this country alone as i´m writing so whether that movie is better than this one is irrelevant, no other movie will make this much money, unless of course james makes another film, he is the true king of cinema..
@GordonDog17 Really dude making money is groundbreaking? ya ok thank you for saying that transformers made close 500 million dollars in america, so that is groundbreaking. OH wait There will be blood made only 45 million dollars so its shit. ok i get the logic bro.
SARCASM
fuck that man, avatar is not groundbreaking, and this is not me bashing blockbusters ok? i will compare sci ffi to sci fi. Et cost 10 milion to make and made more money than avatar adjusted for inflation. ET is movie magic.
Adjusted for inflation is a way of saying in todays world 50 dollars from 1985 is so and so. Inflation is a IF factor. ET made more money IF we make some changes. Fact of the matter is this In 1982 ET made 359,197,037 while in 2009 avatar did 749,766,139. Any individual who talks about box office, biggest opening weekends and so on and so forth never mentions inflation, WHY, BECAUSE IT"S NEVER ACCURATE. We get the numbers close to the ballpark.
@Dreamcast09091999 ok james cameron is the guy who makes expensive films, and people go see them cause they cost so fucking much to make. there are filmmakers like scorsese, who make movies for like a million dollars and have it be way better, than anything cameron will ever make. Taxi driver> Cameron movies
Raging Bull>Cameron movies, Goodfellas>cameron movies, Et>cameron movies. Cameron movies>Transformers. so basically cameron movies are crap compared to filmmakers with real calibur, kubric
Terminator 2 and Aliens two of the best sequels ever made any of those ring a bell? Need i mention Terminator? Martin Scorsese and Cameron are 2 totally different filmmakers. 11 Academy awards for one film, that's not crappy filmmaking. Terminator and Aliens had a budget combined below 25 million and went on to become some of the best SCI-FI films ever made. 2 Different visionary directors that do what they do best make great films in their preferred genres.
@Dreamcast09091999 bro, avatar was absolute shit, titanic was cheesy shit. now i will agree with you that terminator was a great film, i will agree, terminator 2 i felt is when james cameron became way too fucking obsessed with special effects, but terminator 1 was great, let me map this out for you, goerge lucas was a great director when he made star wars, he was a genius sci-fi director. When lucas made the prequels he was a technical director rather than a storyteller, lately like cameron
Get off it, malows. You don't like Cameron films. YOU DON'T. Almost 4 billion dollars worth of movie audiences (calculating Titanic's ticket sales and Avatar's ticket sales) disagree with you. Jackass. You're obsessed with tearing Cameron down. If you really wanted to fucking beat him, you would be looking at all the things he's doing correctly in his films. And he is doing A LOT of things better than a lot of other filmmakers.
Other filmmakers know that. That's why they hate him.
People go to Cameron films, because they care more deeply about his characters - whether YOU personally like them or not - than most characters in most other movies.

I saw 'Alice in Wonderland' It was light years better than Avatar which was visually stunning but absolutely mindless and much more shallow than a baby's bathwater. Alice in Wonderland had a great story with some substance and fun. Avatar was like a beautiful painting - no real substance whatsoever and very discouraging to hear those horrid rehashed one liners
@j04370859 I only searched for this video because some liar at IMDB told everyone that James Cameron spoke about the meaning of the Titanic ending, I didn't know it would all be about Avatar.
I like Avatar, I enjoyed it, I'm just saying that if it wasn't the CGI marvel that it is then no-one would like it because, let's be honest, the CGI is all Avatar has going for it.
@Judgeyy You can say that about the original "Star Wars", "King Kong", "Jurassic Park", and probably "Titanic." But that's simply not the case. "Avatar" is a hit, because of how Cameron created the spectacle. If "Avatar" was made by some hack filmmaker with the same technology, it would of not been such a big hit. It's pretty obvious that Cameron knows how to captivate the world with his art.
@Transformers217@Transformers217 I'm not denying that Cameron is a talented and tasteful director. I just think the only thing decent about Avatar is the CGI. I am 100% certain that if this movie did not have the CGI that it does, no-one would care for it.
It doesn't matter how well Cameron can "captivate" his audience with his films, it's the CGI that draws you in; not Camerons direction.
@Judgeyy If the film wasn't as great as it was, nobody would care for it. So you're point is mute and based on nothing. It was Cameron's direction that captivated the audience, not the CGI. If it was the CGI, then why weren't people completely captivated by the "Star Wars" prequels, or the "Transformers" movies, or "Spiderman 3?"
Cameron creates spectacle that moves people emotionally and creates characters to care about and to root for. That's why "Avatar" was a hit.
@Judgeyy With Cameron's artistic eye, and talent at creating incredible spectacle, visuals, and aesthetics. With an amazing attention to vivid detail, audiences wouldn't of kept going back. That's why both Cameron and the film were nominated for Oscars, because of how well the spectacle was created by Cameron, and the emotional resonance that he was able to convey throughout the entire process.
@Judgeyy well if you knew anything about directing, do you think that weta was responsible for how the CGI would look like and then cameron would only include the effects into the film? you´re ignorant, it was cameron´s direction that made avatar such a wonderful film...
The story left it to imagination. Theu were safe in an environment that was understood. However I got an impression of use your imagination. He said he just wanted to perfect performance capture. Just wait till the sequel he has the tech now. I do think if Gale was still alive it would have had a more intense story. Go Jim let us see the next step.
@mrplainclothesman He didn't. That's why the film is such a big hit, because of the story. The story has resonated with the whole world, because of how it's told.
well i am robi, i think think that the stroy is well written and agree with tran, everythig i the movie was outstading,so i wouldt say the script was terrible, i thought it was good, plus its get u thinking, what should we do with our planet? i think we should save it.
But I'm not anti James Cameron. I support any creative effort. I just like to face the facts that this script is an insult to any writer / screenwriter. You guys gettin sick of my comments LOL
@mrplainclothesman WGA isn't based on politics, they give credit where credit is due. And Cameron has been nominated because of his great talent. Period.
the movie is a perfect example of 'all image , no substance'. And the images are beautiful. Pans Labrynth for example is light years ahead of Avatar on substance. It's not so hard to make an effort for a more that 6 year old level story line. There are very talented writers out there (i'm not one) and they were dismissed cause of James's ego and need to write absolute dribble for this 'script' . He's got the cash, he's got the connections. Too bad he doesn't have a way with words.
@robi2000 The substance is within the world building, the layers of Pandora and the Navi, and the fact that Cameron focuses alot of time on the love story, instead on alot of spectacle. The spectacle towards the end has real substance, because of the build up with the characters, the world, and the spiritual meaning behind it all.
When it comes to dialogue, Cameron ain't no Tarantino. But as a storyteller and director, he's one of the best in cinema.
Some of the reasons for the script on Avatar is Asinine. Jim wrote the movie and story so that a 13 year old could understand. Have you ever planted your ass in a seat where you where " What did he mean by that?".. what did he say?".. hey, get your heads out your arse and enjoy the Movie- who gives a rats arse about an outstanding script, A box office of over 2 Billion does not give a damn about a " Script". The world has spoken.Take that to the bank.
Avatar is a fucking terrible movie! James Cameron is now just a money whore who no longer cares about creative integrity. Terrible acting and a completely unoriginal story make Avatar an awful film. Stop complimenting it, you're ruining the future of film.
Awesome interview. Cameron rules. And the environmental messages didn't hurt Avatar's success at all. Obviously. lol.
Btw, to the other commenters, a horrible script? Don't be stupid. It wouldn't be nominated for BP if it had a "horrible" script. The script quality just doesn't match up with the visuals.
Luke, the script quality doesn't match up with an afterschool special'. The visuals are awesome thanks to some great artists involved but the 'dialogue' cannot even be called a script. But don't get me wrong , the 'script' is fine for 12 and under and i mean that sincerely
@robi2000 The script was actually pretty damn good, because of Cameron's world building. The way he build up Pandora from the ground up is on par with any great sci-fi novel. "Avatar" is a visual novelization. It's also Cameron's most gorgeous, and spiritually impacting film to date.
Avatar's visuals are stunning . i loved that part. But c'mon mate, this story was great for 15 and under. Which is fine cause if the kids are happy then i'm happy.
The story was actually great for all ages. This is a film that's for adults, kids, and whoever. Kinda like Cameron's last film called "Titanic." He makes films that appeal to everybody. Infact, "Avatar" is far more adult then I thought, because of it's sexual imagery, and sensual tone that is displayed throughout the film.
The story is accessible, engaging, and universal. Which is what makes "Avatar" a spectacular experience.
Tran, you sound like you work for the movie. C'mon James, that's you isn't it? Hire a real writer next time. These rehashed moronic one liners in Avatar literally ruined it . THank god for the artists who made the visuals.
@robi2000 I'm actually just another fan of the film. Where did they rehash moronic one liners? There was no actual cheap one-liners in the film that felt jarring or awful. Like I said, some of it is cheesy, but in a good Hollywood fashion kind of way. It feels genuine, plausible, and very well put together.
Cameron knows how to write a story, he knew how to make it appeal to the masses, and his world building is on par with some of the best sci-fi novels.
I loved the film, but when Jake said "This is our land!" to a bunch of natives that feel as one with nature, and claim no ownership to any rock or tree stump, I raised an eyebrow.
It was probably done to make it more consumable, though.
@robi2000 the simple one liners were deliberate. it is scientific mind control. just ask cameron's dad. the entire environmental "movement" is a cover for a sinister plot to depopulate the earth and completely control what is left. refer to the georgia guidestones.
I love Charlie Rose... he's one of my favorite interviewers. I totally agree with Cameron's message here and with what he was trying to say with the movie. Nature will continue on but we as a species are in danger because of our careless "business as usual" attitudes toward the destruction we have caused and continue to cause.
cameron is spot on in this interview. though the story is simplistic, environment protection is always a good message to be reiterating, especially in such widely seen movies.
He should have hired a real writer/screenwriter for this visually amazing movie. The 'script' was the dumbest most substance free rehashed moronic dribble that i've ever witnessed, almost.
Check out Transformers 2, Dear John, Valentine's Day, Twilight, or practically any other movie out there right now if you want "moronic dribble". Sure, it wasn't Tarantino quality stuff, but Cameron's never done that. I would actually say Avatar was a mild improvement over Titanic's even cheesier script.
peacea, if the storyline here is for kids then fine, i'd take kids to see this movie. It's very beautiful. But the lines here are lame on an epic level and there's no real emotion , just a run through. thank god for the great visuals cause it's worth it just for that. It's like seeing something at Disney, no real story expected , just a small world after all with beautiful effects.
@robi2000 Wrong. The story was there, the lines were cheesy but in a good way since they felt genuine and plausible, there was real emotion that resonated with the audience, and Cameron focused more on character and story, instead on alot of spectacle.
Actually there is real emotions throughout the film. I don't know how you can just ignore. The lines are cheesy, but nothing lame. Their plausible, but the films substance is given through it's extraordinary piece of world building. The visuals isn't the only thing that makes the film great. If that's the case, then it wouldn't of gotten 9 Oscar nominations.
He should 3D-fy NatGeo and direct material for it.

Too bad he doesn't have a way with words.
robi2000 2 years ago

Stop complimenting it, you're ruining the future of film.

stop it, you know it's not true. Just be course he wants to make a nr. 2 and 3? What's you're reason for calling James Cameron a money whore?

Awesome interview. Cameron rules. And the environmental messages didn't hurt Avatar's success at all. Obviously. lol.
Btw, to the other commenters, a horrible script? Don't be stupid. It wouldn't be nominated for BP if it had a "horrible" script. The script quality just doesn't match up with the visuals.
LukeLovesRose 2 years ago
Luke, the script quality doesn't match up with an afterschool special'. The visuals are awesome thanks to some great artists involved but the 'dialogue' cannot even be called a script. But don't get me wrong , the 'script' is fine for 12 and under and i mean that sincerely
robi2000 2 years ago
@robi2000 The script was actually pretty damn good, because of Cameron's world building. The way he build up Pandora from the ground up is on par with any great sci-fi novel. "Avatar" is a visual novelization. It's also Cameron's most gorgeous, and spiritually impacting film to date.
Transformers217 2 years ago
Avatar's visuals are stunning . i loved that part. But c'mon mate, this story was great for 15 and under. Which is fine cause if the kids are happy then i'm happy.
robi2000 2 years ago
The story was actually great for all ages. This is a film that's for adults, kids, and whoever. Kinda like Cameron's last film called "Titanic." He makes films that appeal to everybody. Infact, "Avatar" is far more adult then I thought, because of it's sexual imagery, and sensual tone that is displayed throughout the film.
The story is accessible, engaging, and universal. Which is what makes "Avatar" a spectacular experience.
Transformers217 2 years ago 2
Tran, you sound like you work for the movie. C'mon James, that's you isn't it? Hire a real writer next time. These rehashed moronic one liners in Avatar literally ruined it . THank god for the artists who made the visuals.
robi2000 2 years ago

It was probably done to make it more consumable, though.
eloquentdiamond 2 years ago
@robi2000 the simple one liners were deliberate. it is scientific mind control. just ask cameron's dad. the entire environmental "movement" is a cover for a sinister plot to depopulate the earth and completely control what is left. refer to the georgia guidestones.

Thank you for this. I love Cameron and Rose.

I love Charlie Rose... he's one of my favorite interviewers. I totally agree with Cameron's message here and with what he was trying to say with the movie. Nature will continue on but we as a species are in danger because of our careless "business as usual" attitudes toward the destruction we have caused and continue to cause.
bluevanities 2 years ago
cameron is spot on in this interview. though the story is simplistic, environment protection is always a good message to be reiterating, especially in such widely seen movies.

Haha, when he talks about the environmental message and the studio's response...
"If it GOT OUT, that we had an environmental message in the film..."
How could it not get out? It's the most obvious message ever.

He should have hired a real writer/screenwriter for this visually amazing movie. The 'script' was the dumbest most substance free rehashed moronic dribble that i've ever witnessed, almost.
robi2000 2 years ago 3
@robi2000 Amen.
seafury 2 years ago
Check out Transformers 2, Dear John, Valentine's Day, Twilight, or practically any other movie out there right now if you want "moronic dribble". Sure, it wasn't Tarantino quality stuff, but Cameron's never done that. I would actually say Avatar was a mild improvement over Titanic's even cheesier script.
peaceandmetal88 2 years ago 2
peacea, if the storyline here is for kids then fine, i'd take kids to see this movie. It's very beautiful. But the lines here are lame on an epic level and there's no real emotion , just a run through. thank god for the great visuals cause it's worth it just for that. It's like seeing something at Disney, no real story expected , just a small world after all with beautiful effects.
robi2000 2 years ago
@robi2000 Wrong. The story was there, the lines were cheesy but in a good way since they felt genuine and plausible, there was real emotion that resonated with the audience, and Cameron focused more on character and story, instead on alot of spectacle.
Transformers217 2 years ago
Actually there is real emotions throughout the film. I don't know how you can just ignore. The lines are cheesy, but nothing lame. Their plausible, but the films substance is given through it's extraordinary piece of world building. The visuals isn't the only thing that makes the film great. If that's the case, then it wouldn't of gotten 9 Oscar nominations.
