They really shouldn't do this song without Steven. He was the one who helped Ed turn it into a duet based song. It's meant to be sung by those two together. I love Kevin, and he has a great voice, but it's not nearly the same as when Steven sang it. His serious tone added a lot to the band. The others are great musicians, but really without either one of Ed or Steven, the band is a shell of what it used to be.
/Bleh this is what was once a wonderful band now going through the motions for the love of Money.
Terrible without Steven. Just a full Goof Band now, Steven was the offset to that Goofyness. He brought the weight of validity to a band that otherwise could be written off as trite pop garbage.
Bare Naked Ladies its sad to say welcome to the Land of the Black Eyed Peas, and Brittany Spears.
Awww mannn, I know this is the trend to say but seriously..... I don't see why they kept going as a band- sure they're good but you can't cover up the gaping hole in the band. What they should've done is a totally different solo project or new band.... maybe a sorta new genre or SOMETHING..... this is just unbearable and fake.
I love most of the songs without Steve, but some just don't work without him. This and One Week, their greatest hits in a lot of people's opinions, were meant for Ed and Steve, and no one else. Other than those two songs, they are flipping awesome. I LOVE Ed singing What A Good Boy. And their new album is flipping awesome.
I have this album. They hosted it as a free download. I love it. Sure, I miss Steve, but this album showed that they can continue on with the same level of fun and professionalism they always had.
This is the one BNL song Steven says he won't perform because he can't imagine singing it with anyone other than Ed. Ed even realized that they can't perform it without Steven, yet they're still willing to butcher it in public. At 4:09, Ed asks the audience: "Would you folks sing along with us?" because of what he says at 4:14 about Kevin Hearn (who sung Steven's part): "Kev could use the help!".
@bamapagedesign The level of professionalism went way down after the release of "You Run Away".
@billyboobtubeboy They always ask for the crowd to help sing this song. Always have. Their professionalism is still top notch. I get so sick of people crying that Steve is gone. He wasn't the entire band.
@bamapagedesign I know they always have but Ed wouldn't have added "Kev could use the help!" if his voice wasn't weak in this performance. Also, I'm not crying. I'm pissed at the others for pushing Steven out of the band and how they treated him even after he wished them well on their website. Steven was one of the two founders of Barenaked Ladies and has a powerful voice. That and his bantering with Ed were huge parts of the band and they're both missing. They are a totally different band now.
@billyboobtubeboy On this live album, they do wish Steve the best and even dedicate a song to him. Him leaving was a mutual decision. He wasn't pushed out. I don't know where you got your facts. And different doesn't necessarily mean bad.
@bamapagedesign That was to make themselves look good until they released "You Run Away", where they try to make Steven look bad. Ed even said that it's about anyone who's been with the band for over twenty years on Live with Regis and Kelly. Sorry, but he was pushed out. His interview on W5 proves that. The rest of the band declined W5's interview request, probably because they can't refute his claims. Yes, different doesn't necessarily mean bad but it does in this case in more ways than one.
@billyboobtubeboy Wow. You really have no clue what You Run Away was about. It was incredibly respectful and an homage to Steve. It was about how the entire band was feeling his absence in the band. Steve left, but the rest of the band agreed that was for the best as well. He wasn't "pushed out."
i saw them without steve and i was depressed for most part.
ED should make a greatest hits album and put it out as an E.P;he gets his 4 hits he sang with the band.peeps at the show are having a good time cos they don't even know....
I like Kevin, but this is just awkward. Jim sings better. I'm sure he was nervous about stepping up to the role that Steven had. Hope they've gotten better since.
Just keep going and have fun... Which is what they seem to be doing. I'll still follow both BNL and Steven Page. Hopefully everyone still continues to have fun doing this.
See the issue was BNL only had a few days to rehearse so they just kind of threw this together, so I'm sure when they go on tour next they will be much more rehearsed.
maybe they should have rehearsed that. I mean, I know they figured... "well, yaknow we've done it for 20 years... just do steve's part" .... but it doesn't work like that.
you can sort of tell they don't know how to ad-lib without steve... :( this was painful to watch, and listen to. i'm not giving up on bnl... but this is hard to watch.
Kevin's voice is different, but I like it. I will miss Steve but I am glad the ladies are still around and hope they continue to be for a really long time.
Watching this just gives me a sick feeling in my stomach all over again like when they first announced Steve was leaving the band! I REALLY hope they replace Steve.
Totally rawked. I love it that it turned into a duet between Ed and the audience, which is really what the song has been for many years anyway. =) Props to Kevin tho! He rules. =)
The guys will always have my support and love, and I'm thrilled to see them moving on. WTG Kev - loved Ave Maria, I welled up just a little bit! On to bigger and better things! Can't wait for new album!
Kevin singing Steve's part is kind of like Carrot Top trying to do Shakespeare. I'm sure kEVIN is a great guy but as Clint Eastwood said.."A man's got to know his limitations". ANID I LOVE(D) THIS BAND!!!

I think Ed has the chops to carry this band. Love the Rock and Roll All Night bit at the beginning.
Again, not a fan of Kev's voice but I think he managed here just fine. The crowd overpowered him though, lol.
