i did it with two pieces of quartz one time; it took me a while to figure out how to make it work.
you have to strike really hard and the sparks don't travel very far before going out.
the way i did it might not have been the best way, but I put a big wad of tinder on top of a big quartz stone and struck the other stone basically right against the tinder. i couldn't see the sparks that way but it eventually worked.
Flint, qaurtz, chert, granite, sandstone, Jasper, Quartzite, agate.. technically you could use a piece of silver as a striker against any surface harder and sharper than it (a knife blade perhaps??) and make sparks.
Since I was introduced to you through Dave's channel, I've been watching and enjoying all your videos. Instead of a file, I use the back of a high carbon hacksaw blade, because it weighs much less than a chunk of file.
one thing with the file it can be used to sharpen tools and if set up like he shows it can also make fire so to tools in one . now the chunk he shows ya it looks a little big but it would be hard to break it un like a hacksaw blade
Great Video! I have a piece of quartz like that. I found it at lake mead. This is the first of your video's i've watched, think i'll watch the rest of them!
Not to cause an argument. But I know several folks (including myself) who have gotten sparks with every steel used by Mora of Sweden (as well as the original companies Frosts of Mora and KJ Erikkson), Tri-flex, stainless, high carbon, and even the laminated steels.
Technically it can be done with a stainless steel knife of any brand. However you have much less of a chance compared to that when done with high carbon steel.
I woudl love to see a video on that, I didnt think it was even posible to use stainless for this? I persoanly tried many tiems in the past even with flint which should be easier than quartz...
Very good video but kinda basic . Most outdoors men know how to make a fire from flint and steel .

Thanks for this. Once again I've learnt something that I never knew. Is it just quartz or can you use other stones to make the sparks?

@desertsurvivalist Quartzite is sandstone formed by pressure and I think you are using quartzite, not quartz.
