  • Very good video but kinda basic . Most outdoors men know how to make a fire from flint and steel .

  • witch knife is that?

  • Great video Bushman.

  • Forrest fire @ 3:27

  • I carry a lighter in my fire kit lol

  • i learned how to do this last week in wet conditions

  • Great stuff! Keep it up!

  • does it have to be a flat file

  • Thanks!

  • Flint is a variety of quartz

  • nice!

  • if I'm not mistaken you can also use two pieces of quartz, but I've never seen it done

  • i did it with two pieces of quartz one time; it took me a while to figure out how to make it work.

you have to strike really hard and the sparks don't travel very far before going out.

the way i did it might not have been the best way, but I put a big wad of tinder on top of a big quartz stone and struck the other stone basically right against the tinder. i couldn't see the sparks that way but it eventually worked.

  • my mora would slice to the bone if i held it like that and it slipped

  • yeah not a good idea, mora do come quite sharp aswell.

  • That was a trip. I didn't know you could do that. Thanks for sharing. Aloha

  • check out the second part to this video. The viewer helped to simplify the process. Thanks for watching!!

  • @79outlaw Quartz on quarts will also create sparks

  • great video

  • good to know, thanks!

  • Thank you!

  • Thanks John , (I'm gonna send you a couple of Bic lighters , LOL , Just kidding)

  • Good job John!

Have you ever tried holding the char on top of the stone? Many spaarks kick back upward and catch it there as well.. Terrific video Bro

  • good video

  • Great stuff, thanks.

  • Thanks for this. Once again I've learnt something that I never knew. Is it just quartz or can you use other stones to make the sparks?

  • Flint, qaurtz, chert, granite, sandstone, Jasper, Quartzite, agate.. technically you could use a piece of silver as a striker against any surface harder and sharper than it (a knife blade perhaps??) and make sparks.

  • cool, good job

  • Okay John.. are we sure it's quartz? Or is it quartzite? :-p

  • I still don't know lol..

  • @desertsurvivalist Quartzite is sandstone formed by pressure and I think you are using quartzite, not quartz.

  • Funny guy!! I am willing to bet this will come up in the forum!! LMFAOROFL

  • great job, I have always had more sucess with the char cloth on top of the quartz.

  • good stuff man.

  • Since I was introduced to you through Dave's channel, I've been watching and enjoying all your videos. Instead of a file, I use the back of a high carbon hacksaw blade, because it weighs much less than a chunk of file.

  • one thing with the file it can be used to sharpen tools and if set up like he shows it can also make fire so to tools in one . now the chunk he shows ya it looks a little big but it would be hard to break it un like a hacksaw blade

  • Good stuff John.

  • kinda risky holdin the knife blade like that lol wouldn't wanna gash myself out in the middle of nowhere. =p

  • Great Video! I have a piece of quartz like that. I found it at lake mead. This is the first of your video's i've watched, think i'll watch the rest of them!

  • great video, just keep in mind some of your viewers might not know that many mora models are offered in stainless and that wont work...

  • Not to cause an argument. But I know several folks (including myself) who have gotten sparks with every steel used by Mora of Sweden (as well as the original companies Frosts of Mora and KJ Erikkson), Tri-flex, stainless, high carbon, and even the laminated steels.

Technically it can be done with a stainless steel knife of any brand. However you have much less of a chance compared to that when done with high carbon steel.

  • I woudl love to see a video on that, I didnt think it was even posible to use stainless for this? I persoanly tried many tiems in the past even with flint which should be easier than quartz...
