Before Michael passed Greg Ray it almost looked like Ray hit the outsidewall a bit, at least he came very close to the wall. Ironicly Team Menards was always good for a Pole but they never were consistant enough to win the race. I remember for example back in 1995 they had the 2 Topspots on the frontrow with Brayton on the Pole but they didn't manage to win the race.
Of the years during the split, I thought that 2001 was the best of the 500s because it seemed like more and more guys were starting to get some sense in their heads and come back to Indy, then in 2003, ChampCar decided it was gonna go run in Europe and prevent the drivers from even getting a weekend to qualify at Indy.
Paul Tracy is the 2001 Indianapolis 500 Champion....I saw it myself on the IRL's live timing and scoring - should have saved the screenshot, would have made a fortune on the t shirts..
Greg Ray. What an overrated driver. This was a great finish. CART 1-5 using Earl wagons.

You said it, why they felt they should road race in the U.S. and oval race in Europe (Rockingham, Lausitz) was beyond me.

how embarrassing for the IRL regulars. Top six finishers were Champ Car regulars. Haha

Team Menard, strong as usual and doesn't finish the job. LLoyd Ruby is Indy's hard luck hero, Menard gets the award for an owner.
