Ivy bridge will be the next big upgrade since core 2 duo with 3d transistors. Next year laptops will be thin very powerful. Imagine a pentium 4 in a laptop, it could heat the house doing a task that will take 1 minute on ivy bridge vs the pentium 4 that will take an hour to do while taking more power consumption.
Say i7 2600k vs pentium 4 3.8ghz. Performance per watt say p4 is 1x an i7 would be on most tasks 20x better performance per watt.
Protoking: Pentium 4 was one of the worts proccessors made. AMD last led the performance per watt by a considerable way with athlon 64 and x2 etc.
Pentium m was the first stage which intel used to realise you can have power and efficiency and they produced core duo then core 2 duo which not only was 64bit but very power finished and didn't need to run at 3ghz to be fast. Theres a reason wht core 2 duo overclocked.
Pentium 4's were probably the worst cpu released performance per watt.
Not really, the pentium III was the milestone, the core 2 duo is actually based on the PIII so you can thank it for your core2duo and the core i5+ series is based on the PIII and some much welcome parts of the P4 architecture, as well as some things copied from AMD, (Speed throttling anyone?)
@kuza261 I agree the Pentium 4 was the real milestone, it can still play some of the games today and it's the first processor I've used that didn't choke up opening every little application. Even today it can rip through web pages and is all most consumers need. That said my main rig is an E8400@3.6GHz and I love it.
@kawaiifreak860 Simply put, the high clocked (good) Pentium 4 processors were available in 2003/2 and were the first processors along with Later Athlon XP's and any Athlon 64 that didn't frequently max themselves out running basic applications such as web based video, flash on the internet etc. These processors finally let users take full control of their computer.
Core 2 was a great chip but by time it came out (2006) it was overkill for the uses of most people while most were satisfied in 03.
Im totalt agaisnt cloud computing. beacause if force us the users to be dependant on some giant coorporation that dont care about money but all they whant is to control and RUN YOUR LIFE!! 1984 Goerge Orwell anyone!
i like to have a hard drive and being able to disconnect the internet by pulling a wire. and still be able to use my pc.
I definitely think that general computing (opening DOCs, and internet browsing) doesn't need more power, but the point when I think computers don't need to go faster is when everything is instantaneous. And then I'll bitch about impracticality of human interface devices.
Really the Athlon 64 X2 was just as good as Core 2 Duo in day to day use, you talk about many users potentially not noticing the difference between C2D and Core i7 in day to day use and I think this was also the case between Athlon X2 and Core 2, and perhaps Pentium D and Core 2, only in gaming and heavy applications did I ever notice a difference.
@neoparshath more core require more voltage to keep up performance. and low NM process can be a pain in the ass for allowing 8 cores to run as fast as 2.
get the latest processor. the reason is because if you're getting a duo core, future games are gonna be hard to play if their graphics are of those high end ones. i suggest to get an i5 processor. that'll do well ^^
Excellent video, I completly agree with you! I have always needed that bit more processing power, and at the moment im using a core 2 duo, which suits my needs fine. The only upgrade I need is on the graphics front. I will eventually get an 15/i7 chip, but its not essential. You are so right about the processers being ahead of software developers!
Even the previous generation of AMD would be my first choice over C2D for an Apple system...
But sadly Jobs has chosen to ignore the obvious increase in overall efficiency offered by the HT Link vs the overly complex and clunky N Bridge controllers Intel FINALLY had the sense to abandon:)
Can a Hackintosh work well with an older Phenom 2 system? I wonder....
I suppose it's a matter of opinion really. Despite the highly inefficient architecture and the superiority of PI(Barcelona) on paper, a lot of folks still found the Core2 architecture worked better in certain real life applications.
Another thing I think is that OEM's, especially major OEM partners like apple, who guarantee a lot of CPU sales for their MFG of choice, namely Intel, are given much more info about the future roadmap of CPU's from said MFG than we, the public, ever get.
Processing, yes. We are able to perform actions on data and get results at a fantastic rate.
We are still very behind on storage and data transfer-- which is why this processing is such a big deal. Move less data perform more computations on it locally, in essence move the processing to the data. I don't really know how to explain that. The hadoop people do a much better job of it.
Prices will go up because of cloud computing due to the lower demand by consumers, so they'll charge us more for their services as it'll cost them a hell of a lot more to buy the CPU's and what have you to actually run these services. There's always a downside lol.
e-Ye am pretty sure engineers have already developed a processor so completely beyond retail manufacture (ex: a pico size zetta-hertz [Zz] processing unit) that the only thing missing is developing a correlated parser loop matrix which can produce a self-adapting representation of a sired emotional awareness or figured reality. like bullets being replaced by coils & lasers, homo sapien sapiens will mistakenly invade themselves with the Sentinel. damn... how did iNT3Rn'et become god?
its 2012 and im still using a core2duo

Also pentium 4's struggled heavily on flash. A core 2 duo was needed for flash to play smoothly as well as high definition video.

Then why is the core 2 based on the PIII?
And why is it a 800mhz PIII beats a 1.0ghz + P4?
Explain this bullshit.

@neoparshath But see the thing is that not many programs take advantage of the quad core or higher, so duo is really the best way to go.

yet my toughbook, builta year before the ibook, and a 733 mhz processor with one third the ram, plays youtube fine
mac saved itself when it got rid of the g4 crap

I wont be going to "cloud computing" any time soon, hopefully not in my life time.
I think software has a long way to go just to catch up to the hardware we have right now considering most programs are not even multi threaded.
