I disagree. Dropping Atom bombs to save lives? How ironical?
It is very much like saying the Gattling gun was invented to save lives in the civil war. Or like cotton machines were invented to save slaves from being exploited.
Truman had an obligation to save GI's lives who were dying at a rate that was appalling. It achieved its purpose; forcing Japan's surrender. This not only saved many thousands of GIs (my father and father-in-law included), but saved millions of Japanese civilians. Children were being armed to fight the invasion they were sure was coming. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for that decision. Logically, an action that ends a war early does save lives, as demonstrated in this instance.
I disagree once again. It is true that the bombs ended the war. It is also quite possible that it saved your father's life. However my friend, you are seeing the brighter side of the attack. You are a part of the winning side, shielded by the heavy industrialized machineries.
However think about this. A child is born in Nippon. He/She who was not even a part of the war. Born 10-15yrs after the war, born with deformed body parts.
The child questions, why am I so different. Why do my friends look at me with disgust? The answer his/her parents don't know at the moment.
The answer we know now. Due to the dropping of the atomic bombs the chemicals inhaled by the child's parents affected the birth.
Maiming him/her for life...deformed, ashamed of his/her appearance infront of the mirror. If this is what you call saving lives..then I have nothing more to argue about. You win. I loose.
Ignorance is your enemy brethren. There is documented citing s of disability caused by the atomic bombings. Look into it further. It might be an eye opener for you.
It doesnt matter how I would have ended the war. What matters is the dropping of atomic bombs was not justified under these circumstances.
It is always easier to criticize Truman's decision, than come up with your own solution. Again, how would you have ended the war? Don't duck the question.
do you are an idiot.. I just proved you wrong on your history.
Is it important for me to say how I would havge ended the war? haha your such a noob. Sometimes when you argue logically and you are proven to not know history, you should humbly accept your defeat.
Your response makes my point. It is easier to criticize Truman than come up with a viable alternative. Apparently, you resort to crude language when you have no credible argument.
Again, since you are the font of all morality and knowledge, what would you have done in Truman's place? It is so easy to pontificate when you sit in your cushy home out of danger. Thousands of your GIs and civilians are being killed every day. What would you do, sport? Pontificating doesn't get the job done. Courage, as Truman showed, does. The Japanese didn't surrender even after Hiroshima. So, what would you have done? Obviously, you don't have an answer, just platitudes. Pathetic.
We were talking to the Japanese for months before they attacked at Pearl Harbor, trapping young sailors inside the Arizona until they finally died 20+ days later, all the time banging on the hul of the ship in a futile attempt to get rescued! What is there to talk about when a country won't surrender even after the first atomic bomb is dropped on a major city? Diplomacy? Your answers show you don't think an issue through. Stop hurling invectives and educate yourself about issues.
Diplomacy is always the answer...not atom bombs. I am sorry I cannot agree with you on this. Atom bombs are only used for the destruction of life.. not saving them. Big man and little man were a horrible tragedy not life savers. I think through an issue just like you do. The only difference is I don't support the war hungry military point of view that has been installed in your bible belt, bourgeoisie mind.
Diplomats for the US and Japan were talking for a year. Unfortunately, it didn't stop them from attacking us or giving up, even knowing their own women and children were going to die for their cause. Japan chose war instead of diplomacy. Knowing this, what would you do to end the war? Diplomacy didn't work. What now?
Your assumption that I am from the Bible belt is incorrect. More invectives?
More invectives, sigh. Apparently you are unable to defend your position knowing the Japanese stopped the diplomatic route, and so repeat yourself. Admit it, you would let millions more die because you wouldn't have the courage to end it. Who would you talk to, yourself? Taking your viewpoint to it's logical conclusion, we would all be under dictatorships because apparently in your world, freedom is not worth fighting for, even though you are enjoying it at your computer right now.
Japan was talking about surrender prior to the bombings but only in an act of minimum loss of face. This was due to heavy bombardment on 67 Japanese cities, for 6 months straight. Japan's talks of surrender had already reached US soil.
However there are pictures of letters on the internet that show how the US military chief proposes the idea of bombardin major civilian cities of Japan.
Japan did not talk about surrendering. Japan's own ambassador didn't know about the sneak attach on Pearl Harbor. He met with Dulles and was ashamed of Japan's actions. Yamamoto said it best: "I fear we have awakened a sleeping giant, and filled him with a terrible resolve." He knew the Empire of Japan was doomed the minute they attacked us. He spent his college years in the U.S. War with the U.S. wasn't as easy as tormenting China and the Philipines.
67 Japanese cities were bombarded for 6 months straight prior to the bombings. Japan was talking about surrender now, but with an act of minimum loss of face. Letters from US military chief to the president show how the civilian population of Japan became the primary target. they planned 9 Atomic bombs, only 2 of them were launched. This is not about revenge for Pearl harbor or saving lives. It is about an act of spreading terror and hence domination. This is unjustified and immoral.
US government says that the dropping of these bombs was necessary cuz it saved lives (American lives of course).A 45 minute meeting that calculated this military move, didn't even discuss whether or not to use this weapon. You mean to say this heartless act of killing 240,000 people mostly children and women was to save lives? Does the pile of bodies laying as the aftermath.. none American of course, not matter?
I suppose you should ask all these questions to the military junta that ruled Japan at the time, for they are the only ones who could answer them. Why did they start the war in the Pacific? What did China ever do to them? What did the Phillipines ever do to them? Why did they start the war? How could they rape and murder innocent women? How could they kill unarmed old men and women in China? Japan is to blame for all these atrocities. Plain and simple. You can't rewrite history.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki were chosen because they also had military installations there. Also, Japan would not surrender. I don't know where you are getting your information from, but it defies historical record. Finally, what is immoral and inhumane is using Chinese babies for bayonet practice, raping Philipino women until they lost their minds and starving POWs as the Japanese soldiers did. It is also immoral and inhumane to not surrender and save your own citizens from war.
You are a Japanese apologist. How you can defend the atrocities Japan did during the war to the Chinese and the Philipinos is beyond anything I have ever heard. Their behavior was barbaric and inexcusible. Shame! Your view of this is so skewed, it defies historical record. Do yourself a favor and read "Tora Tora Tora" or watch the movie. It is based on interviews of both sides. It is a very accurate depiction of events. Most of the stuff you wrote is rubbish.
I am not a Japanese apologist. I am rather a US apologist. I apologize for the atrocities. It is true that Japan went into the Asian mass, but so did the USA. Thats how the war started. No one in single is to blame. Both countries are responsible. But the dropping of Atomic- Bomb .. the subject that in question, is what I said was immoral. It will always be inhumane and immoral. No matter how much you deny it. Our conversation is thus over. You are a complete douche. Blocked.
You are indeed; you are unable to assign blame where it truly belongs, that's confusion. Apparently, in your world defending yourself is the same as attacking another!
I notice you resort to crude language when you can't defend you statements. Strange.
There is no brighter side of war. It is all ugly. The only good thing about it is the end of it and the rebuilding of Europe and Japan, financed by the U.S.
I'm from europe and whatever anybody may think of the current US' foreign policy or the present government - we should be frickin greatful and I for my part am!
Bullshit. Ein Land das bis heute Kriegsverbrechen von unfassbarem Ausmaß offiziell leugnet hat keinen Respekt verdient. 15 000 000 Tote Zivilisten, Massenvergewaltigung, Biowaffenexperimente an Chinesen, Folter etc...

Pearl Harbor was a military target.. but Hiroshima and Nagasaki was regretfully a civilian population of 300,000 people and only 40,000 soldiers.
That is immoral and inhumane to me.
