Truman had an obligation to save GI's lives who were dying at a rate that was appalling. It achieved its purpose; forcing Japan's surrender. This not only saved many thousands of GIs (my father and father-in-law included), but saved millions of Japanese civilians. Children were being armed to fight the invasion they were sure was coming. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for that decision. Logically, an action that ends a war early does save lives, as demonstrated in this instance.

We were talking to the Japanese for months before they attacked at Pearl Harbor, trapping young sailors inside the Arizona until they finally died 20+ days later, all the time banging on the hul of the ship in a futile attempt to get rescued! What is there to talk about when a country won't surrender even after the first atomic bomb is dropped on a major city? Diplomacy? Your answers show you don't think an issue through. Japan was talking about surrender prior to the bombings but only in an act of minimum loss of face. This was due to heavy bombardment on 67 Japanese cities, for 6 months straight. Japan's talks of surrender had already reached US soil.

However there are pictures of letters on the internet that show how the US military chief proposes the idea of bombardin major civilian cities of Japan.

Japan did not talk about surrendering. Japan's own ambassador didn't know about the sneak attach on Pearl Harbor. He met with Dulles and was ashamed of Japan's actions. Yamamoto said it best: "I fear we have awakened a sleeping giant, and filled him with a terrible resolve." He knew the Empire of Japan was doomed the minute they attacked us. He spent his college years in the U.S. War with the U.S. wasn't as easy as tormenting China and the Philipines.

Letters from US military chief to the president show how the civilian population of Japan became the primary target. they planned 9 Atomic bombs, only 2 of them were launched. This is not about revenge for Pearl harbor or saving lives. It is about an act of spreading terror and hence domination. This is unjustified and immoral.
