I just got one of these gel ant farms, then I purchased 30 "harvester" ants. Are these female ants? If so, I read they die within 1-3 months. How can I get a male ant, or how can I make it so they reproduce on there own, or do you think it would be a bad idea (overpopulation?). Thanks.

average worker ant is female, and worker ant is what you get, they cannot reproduce

All the ants in the video are worker ants and are indeed female. In the ant world, the males only function is to mate with the queen. So the choice of music is appropriate for the video ;)

Yeah, the workers without wings are sterile females, but there are other female ants with wings who are fertile. So one of them becomes queen.

u use about 25ish ants in the antworks at once, if an ant dies there is no hard done to the antworks and you make simply leave the ants inside the antworks

I have antworks and mine is green but i went and put fire ants in... i got them from outside and i got eggs and stuff with them and so the already had a beetle thingy and they killed it and dug only 1 hole to put it in! thats the only thing they have done! so i went out today to get more workers and i found the queen! do i hope it will get started soon!

IKeiichiroI Yes, you can put any types of ants in. However i dont recommend carpenter ants as they nest in wood. An easy start would be lasius niger (Common black ant)

omg i have a question ok i baught a ant gel farm and i got Western Harvester ants and the first day they started building and the second day all they do is get in 1 big back in a circle and just stand there not building anything. i give them some water and bread. does anyone know why?

if u have a gel colony DO NOT FEED THEM the gel has a special liquid in it so as they dig they can eat the stuff. if u put stuff in there it will rot.

It could take a few hours before the ants get comfortable to their new surroundings. The blue light you see in the video came with the Antworks you see in the video.

The only way to destroy the tunnels is to buy a gel refill kit. I heard about them releasing such a kit. I dont know, what a new batch of ants would do with existing tunnels. I have not bought a 2nd batch of ants yet.

Once all of the ants die off you take the container into the sink and rinse all the poop and loose gel out. Then once you get the new ants they will use the same tunnels and possible expand. :)

Ants have an expected life span of up to six months. Some ants have been known to live longer than that. Yes, would be nice to have a whole colony, if only it was that easy to get a queen ant to start the colony.

It is easy to get a queen. I wouldn't want to torture a WHOLE colony by making them live in these pieces of junk though, its bad enough that those workers have to suffer in that gel for no reason.

The gel is food and water and they love it......They get more food in the glass box, then in the wild, and they live longer in it, because they have all the food and water they can ever want and are safe from people and animals killing them.

Well, the ants found in your garden may not be harvester ants. The ones I bought and are the ones in the video are harvester's. They have large mandibles, which are best suited for digging. Ants with small mandibles, from what I have heard will not dig tunnels in the gel too good. The ants that I received all appear to be adults and are too big to fit through the two air holes in the lid.
