not late at all. it's never too late. if you have the heart, passion and soul for music, what may take 10 years for you to master may only take 1 year!!!
i agree cheeky. and what an odd endpin and position hes playing in.. my endpin is half that size. i'd be afraid of snapping clear off it mine were that long.
p.s. It's not just modern either.Tthis is only the Prelude movement. The whole concerto goes through a range of musical influences, from baroque to classical to modern and jazz. The other movements were beautifully performed here too, especially the lyrical second movement and the Alla Marcia finale.
I disagree with the last poster. It is not a rock show, it is a classical concert. This piece, reflecting the composer, is modern classical music with a jazz influence.
(Jazzy classical music is nothing new btw; listen to Beethoven's op.111 - pre-empting jazzy music by 100 years!)
I have heard quite a few performances/ recordings of this concerto, and in my opinion this performance ranks among the best, both from the soloist and the orchestral support.
it's a rock show and the rest of the band couldn't look deader...Tuxes and modern music just don't mix. Somebody gave a bunch of zombies wind instruments...actually come to think of it, that'd be hysterical.
Gautier is my fave cellist living today. I love this concerto too, this performance is from a Gulda memorial concert in Japan in 2005. Gulda wrote this for Heinrich Schiff - who Gautier was a student of. So very nice touch. :)
btw Gautier also played this work at the Lugano Festival 2006, available on a CD boxset released by EMI. Highly recommended!
You're welcome :) The EMI boxset is called "Martha Argerich and friends - Live at the Lugano Festival 2006" (3CDs). I think Gautier is good friends with Argerich; he plays at her Lugano Festival each year.
Argerich was a student of Gulda. Gautier was a student of Schiff. Gulda wrote this cello concerto for Schiff. Cool, eh? =)
I prefere AC/DC but it's nice ;-)

Pues es mejor que Jeff Beck no se entere de que existe esta pieza, porque como se entere la va a meter en su próxima gira en vez del Bolero.

what an awful composition. structureless, directionless, the music is purely built up of clichés.
nonetheless, its a well performance.
cheekychiko 3 years ago
ps. not structureless, but a bad structure really.

Who are you to judge? Where is your compostion?

Actually the idea comes from Igor Strawinski, who one of the first composers liked to mix the styles. Good work!
