Discussion , and certainly debate, on this subject should be preceded by some serious reading: the four volumes (books) by Richard Rhodes that make up "The Making of the Nuclear Age." Volume One, 1988 Pulizter Prize winner, "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" exhaustively covers the period from about 1900 to the end of WWII, and is a great place to start. Read at least the first two volumes, watch Countdown to Zero, then come back and discuss. Visit richardrhodesdotcom/books.
the world seriously has to get together and talk about this, espeacially iran. Now i have to admit, a nuclear weapon like the one used in hiroshima can end wars and reduce causalties but you all now how we humans are, at one point or another were going to overuse these weapons maybe wipeout whole nations.
The Hiroshima-bomb ended the war, BUT it killed thousands of people! And without any reason(Japan was already down) instead of testing the bomb under real conditions.
What if Japan had nuclear weapons two? They perhaps would have answered the attack. We will never know.
you can never eliminate hate, people will always seek to put down others, and be 'on top.' we can publicly eliminate these weapons, but the underground will always be there
@huntardrape The increased surface area would allow more of the asteroid to burn away in the atmosphere. Also if detonated far away it might allow us to change the course just enough to make it miss. It is a desperate last option but for now it's all humanity has.
@IIC4NCELEDII an atomic detonation of 2000 kilotons in space against an asteroid the size of texas would barely shift its vector that might help if it were way out but we wouldnt spot a collision asteroid until it was really close and at that point we would have to call Bruce Willis
@CALLMEPAPi5 i traying to say this, this is all american politik to get suport from world to atack iran, sory bad english.America mast distroyd self NUKE,and then speak abauth another country.
Tony B-Liar? The great advocate of WMD existence in Iraq, has he appeared YET again? The liar, the hypocrite, the shameless, remorseless murderer of one million Iraqis! Now this ass is drumming the same mantra for Iran? Bullshit! Yes nuclear weapons should be eliminated since now they have more advanced weapons assuring controlled destruction. By the way, at 1:56 what's in the center of the sun over Obama's head? Is it a Pyramid?
Soon someone behind the desk would say 'time to HAARP the world!'
@NoShit12 Instead of wasting time posting on youtube why don't you do the same. Let me guess how much of your time and money you have invested in helping save lives......$0
ZERO was in 1945 when the USA dropped a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima. Back than the US Air Force did what no terrorist has ever done: a massive Holocaust.
@Zyziz Sending out a warning is not an excuse for killing 260,000 civilians. ~ Moreover, Japan tried to surrender for multiple times on diplomatic channels and was ignored. ~ Nuking them was just to test a new weapon under real conditions as well as to intimidate the Soviet Union. ~ Go cry me a river, but c'est la réalité!
@Zeruju wow..you have no idea what you are talking about...the US was demanding unconditional surrender by the empire of Japan, something that Japan was not going to do. if you sincerely believe that Japan tried to surrender multiple times through diplomatic channels and was ignored, then you need to stop getting your news from The Onion. Also, if you havent heard of "X Day", then you need to look it up because if we didnt drop the bombs and we went through with X Day, i wouldnt have been born
@Zeruju this may just be my Proud American Stupidity, but japan lost all right to cry foul after pearl harbor. and if youre interested in war crimes in relation to Japan, other than the obvious Pearl Harbor attack, you might want to look up Nanking and what happened there. Japan was a fucked up country in WWII.
@rman12117 after a surprise attack to a military target (pearl harbor, a naval base)
justifies the use of nuclear weapons on cities? or that if the japanese are doing something horrible to the chinese justifies you to act similar or worse?
you might want to look up the reasons why the bombs were used, "ending the war" is just naive bullshit...
@QuartuvLarry what i'm trying to convey here is that japan would've surrendered regardless. though they handled the situation pretty poorly, but no nukes would've been necessary.
@rman12117 "this may just be my Proud American Stupidity" -> Indeed, it is. :-)
It's just the proud bullshit of an American not able to admit the US has done multiple Holocauts in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, too. Events just in line with the Japanese-American internment, Agent Orange, My Lai, Nogeun-ri, Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, the kidnapping of Manuel Noriega and wars of aggression against Panama as well as against Iraq, Vietnam and Korea,... Oh! It seems there is not enough space left!
@Zeruju oh right right and if i were to write down all of the atrocities that japan has committed against china ALONE it would take up this entire page. you strike me as an incredibly dumb if not mentally challenged individual and you should get help
@Zeruju Would you rather the U.S. staged a ground invasion of Japan at an estimated cost of 1 million American casualties and 5 million Japanese? Its easy to look back today and say "oh, we should have sought another way to end WWII" However, if you were Truman, had seen 4 years of war and 450,000 of your own citizens killed, and were facing the devastating casualty estimates of a mainland invasion, what would you do? I think that's a pretty easy call.
Blah, blah, blah. You simply could have accepted the Japanese offer for surrender. But you didn't because the US were not willed to end the war without the nuke. The US were not willed to accept Japan's surrender because it was not unconditional. -> What a lame excuse! ~ That is the truth! It is that simple and every polemic comment made by ppl like you makes me even more convinced of that fact.
@Zeruju The unconditional surrender applied solely to the Japanese military, not to the government or people. What you bleeding hearts can't seem to wrap your minds around is that we had been engaged in TOTAL WAR with Japan for 3 1/2 years. And to add to all this, you act as if the massive nuclear proliferation that occurred after WWII wouldn't have happened if we didn't nuke Japan. However, I make it a point not to argue with idiots, so I will no longer be continuing this conversation.
@terriers2012 Oy, you just went personal there. Your argument was fine up until that point. In fact, I agreed with it. The world knew of the possibilities. It was only a matter of time. We got there first. However, what I would hazard as a more dangerous scenario would be if we DIDN'T nuke Japan (much as I hate to say that). If the USSR had proceeded with their campaign in the Pacific (as our "allies"), the world would be very different today. However, no personal attacks, please.
@Zeruju As a historian of World War II, I feel inclined to insist on two things: A) The Japanese people are incredibly proud. It's one of the reasons they fought so strongly against us. They would never have surrendered if we didn't threaten them with either total annihilation or an invasion. That IS documented. Look it up. B) I won't deny the bomb was horrendous, but calculations put the lives lost as less than if we had invaded. Which we would have needed to, with Japan's policies at the time.
In this day, everyone wants peace, however unfortunate, there is also no 'superpower' resolve to prevent another 'rouge nation/state' or dictator from using said weapons to futher an agenda. In 1939, FDR rallied the American people (against thier will, with the use of heavy propaganda) into supporting the war effort. Right over Evil prevailed. That will never happen again, thanks to the dumbing down of the population, and God help us next time.

@m1grand70 are you kidding? the bombs used in ww2 didn't "end" anything and the reasons why they were used had literally nothing to do with it.
and they sure as hell didn't save anyone or reduce casualties...
it was a heinous and cowardly act.
