  • Just so lucky to have seen him playing for real... I'm french, I'll have to wait for the next album in order just to believe I'll see him !

  • The 2nd time I saw Tool it was outdoors & raining pretty hard in B'ham, AL. They played this song & when Maynard sang, "Cause I'm praying for rain" they hit these super-bright lights & that place went nuts! The 1st time I saw them I somehow walked away with the best souvenir this drummer could ever ask for, one of Danny Carey's drumsticks!! This was years before he switched to Vic Firth. It was a Trueline Danny Carey signature stick & I've held on to it for 14 1/2 yrs. He's a modern-day Bruford.

  • Good fuckin god. Shit gets intense at 5:35. What an absolute machine. Its incredible how much finesse and fluidity he has for such a heavy hitter.

  • 1:42 my fav danny carey fill

  • just like hendrix but on drums

  • 1 dislike? Who is this fool?

  • @stoogend lars ulrich:D

  • He's definitely phenomenal. Chad Sexton from 311 is right up there also.

  • Yeah man. Chad is definitely underrated. He could hold a groove and rock polyrhythms, like in transistor. reggae influence. idk about top in the world tho. Cuz you gotta consider Mike Portnoy, Thomas Haake, Bill Bruford, Neil peart, and king crimsons drummer

  • somebody please tell me: what does he play from 2:49 - 3:30 and from 4:08 - 5:00?

  • @jimrhcp95 he plays in a 3/4 count constant 16th notes on the bass drums with 8th notes on the toms. on beat 1 he hits his lowest floor tom and for the rest of the time he is on his higher floor tom, except at the & on 2 he hits his hi tom. I could be wrong but I hope that helps!

  • the title is so funny "Danny Carey performs Ænema" lol

  • @killermooserabit Hahahaha. Im absolutely pissing myself.

  • @killermooserabit buhahaha...i didn't even catch that when i've read the title of this video clip since i have been looking for any danny carey's clips of their songs on yt so it sounded logical...but when ya isolate it and really think for a moment this title sounds fuckin' hilarious indeed....and why would he perform 'enema' at a drum 'clinic'?...good catch... };->

  • the one thing i most admire of Danny is his creativity when he comes with this amazing drum patterns. The difficult thing in this kind of drumming is not actually learn them to play, is how you come up with this creativity. Thats the hard part for me in my opinion. Tool is an amazing band and their chemistry is really unique.

  • @drumjoba well, i have to disagree with your claim that learning to play exactly what danny carey plays is "not difficult." just sayin.

  • @drumjoba I totally agree. You can tell a lot of thought went into his drum parts & to me that's what drives Tool's music. A good drummer can turn a so-so band into a great band. Tool's complex music needs this kind of creative/complex drumming. Just think of how it would sound w/The Rolling Stones' Charlie Watts playing drums. I love Watts but his playing doesn't suit Tool's music. Anyway, like u said it's one thing to learn/play these parts but another thing entirely to write them.

  • Danny Carey. just that

  • Kid: Dad, what's Danny Carey's middle name?

    Dad: Fuckin'!

  • Epic work Mr. carey! You have crossed fucking over..

  • Whose that one fuck who disliked this?

  • @PsexyPsychopath lol probably danny himself lol

  • best rock drummer ever.

  • @46drumbum

    correction plz!!!

    BEST DRUMMER EVER..... !!!

  • It always amazes me to see The Great One perform. With as much power as He clearly use in his drumming, He still makes it look sooo effortless! If ya look real close, ya can see he really has four arms, and four legs.A spider behind the drums

  • DANNY THE MAN CARRY!!!! A MASTER OF THE KIT!!!

    he is so awesum!

  • this man is my idol!!!

  • This video was so helpful in learning how to play the song, brilliant :D

  • danny is so primal and organicand talented. so is the rest of the band, prob why they are so good.

  • Jedi.

  • epic

  • the Master

  • Danny makes those 24" kicks look like 22".

  • it's amazing to see how his part has evolved

  • These people were so fuckin lucky man

  • They say that at this clinic he explained how the tabla solo in Rosetta Stoned went. Does anyone have any videos of that? Matter of fact, does any one have any videos of him speaking at this clinic???

    Thanks.

  • @23DNicholas I would love to see him break down that tabla part.

  • He is also without his Mandala pads, which makes it all the better when he manages to compensate with acoustic drums...

  • see its easy to play the drums, especially if your 6 foot 4 and your built like a tank, those drum sticks look like tooth picks for him!

  • @LedZepfan122 well maybe a lot of people have the body part down but likely not to have the brain part down. can't have one over the other.

  • what snare is that?

  • on tour, danny uses a bronze or brass 8x14 signature snare. i'm not certain if this is the snare he's using with this kit. this is a wood kit that he doesn't use often. in fact, at this clinic, he said he hadn't played this kit in 10 years.

  • @enreekay13 That is his old Sonor kit.

  • @hexadecim8 as enreekay13 said he uses a 14x8 Jeff Ocheltree cast bronze snare, google jeff he has danny's model up on his site

  • im proud that i can play that quiet drums part with the double bass

  • Ok... Here's a cookie.

  • I can't :( I fail at double kicks, annoying as hell. Got any tips?

  • uh...i don't really have any tips man...i'm just good at double bass...good luck

  • run. use your whole legs. lead with left. run. run. run.

  • depends ..you want speed or control?. practice triplets and double stroke rolls for as long your legs will let you

  • adjust throne so that your thighs are approx. parallel with the floor. move your throne forward as much as possible, use the balls of your feet and put your whole leg in to it then sit up straight and maintain good posture

  • Thanks heaps. Yeah I think my main problem is control, I guess I should just start slow and go as fast as I can without losing control, and eventually my speed will build up.

  • @Shibby5404 PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT! You won't get good in a day by simply reading to a few tips. Don't get disappointed, but it will probably take a while to get where you want. Just use the tips, and practice practice practice. It worked for me :)

  • adjust your pedals every couple of days if they feel off, get them "just right" and for the part in this song, the dbl bass is pretty slow, think as a triplet with the bass, bass, tom. and don't think,

  • Ahh, I didn't actually pay attention to that in the video, I always thought it was triplets completely on bass. My kit's at a friends house and I have no space here for the moment, cleaning up today. So I haven't been able to play for ages, but I'm pretty keen to work on my double kicks now.

  • @Shibby5404 Been 2 yrs since u asked for tips. If u still need tips do different exercises maybe w/out sticks like: .RRLRRLRRLRRL. .LLRLLRLLRLLR. .RLLRLLRLLRLL. .LRRLRRLRRLRR. .RLRRLRLLRLRRLRLL. .RRLLRRLLRRLLRRLL. .LLRRLLRRLLRRLLRR. And so on. If u know rudiments then u see the paradiddle I suggested(5th pattern). There are 4 variations of that pattern. Just take the doubles & put them in a different place. Like, RRLRLLRLRRLRLLRL. Do these slowly at 1st. Focus on evenness. Good luck.

  • Thanks, I've changed accounts since then. I haven't had enough control in my left foot to be able to play this until now, looked this up to try learn it again and happened to see your comment. Thanks for the tips, I'll work on it, at the moment I'm working on getting the timing of those left handed hits between the bass triplets, once I've got it down this song should be an awesome double kick warm up

  • This guy is a fuckin' beast on the drums. One of the top 5 in the World right now.

  • watching this is like going to Disneyland when you're a kid.

  • @BlizzardOfThyDoom haha nice analogy.

  • his toms sound great on the albums but the rack toms are so small they seem to be getting kinda lost in this setting

  • i think its just the camera used to take this vid. everything sounds great on the AndrewI85 vid of Rosseta Stoned

  • Best Drumer Ever!!!!

  • For me the bass drum part here is easier than playing straight 16th notes. i cant keep my feet goin like that but if i break it up with the hands, like Beat5ToloG said, its similar to tim alexanders part in my name is mud. it sounds great and is actually easier (for me) than some straight foward speed metal

  • @beyer66 yeah, and you can also hit harder cuz each limb by itself is moving slower. so you can be louder! thats how danny brings the thunder, big and open style. i love it

  • It's a swiss triplet (without the flam) between the right hand and both feet. Ie. RH RF RL - to sound like a triplet roll.

  • and that should, in fact, read *RH RF LF*

  • @SymbioticMonarch Exactly! Years ago before I had a double-bass pedal, I would use my floor tom in a similar way. For the generic 16th note double-bass part I would (and still do) play 8th notes on the floor tom & fill in the other notes on the bass drum. Just thought I'd share that.

  • Fuck yeah !

  • Danny Carey is my favourite drummer. This stuff is relatively basic for him. His wierd time signatures and rhythm patterns are mind blowing. I aspire to be able to play like him. I but am a mortal :(

  • and that is why I want to be a proffesional drummer.....

  • Daymn dis guy is a god in drums..

  • boosh!!

  • you're my hero danny. thanks for all the great music

  • This is the strangest double kick pattern. So hard to maintain, cos the temptation is to keep it straight

  • its the same as my name is mud.

  • great thing about danny is you dont realize how difficult his drumming is until you try to play it. for example the groove at1:07 is really difficult when it sounds very simple

  • I think you've summed up why I love him perfectly. People underestimate him a bit when they hear things like Schism, but I find myself thinking, "you can play it....could you have written it?" And you're right, he has such good technique, you find yourself thinking "I could manage that"...then you try and....oh dear, lol

  • yeah man for sure, like the acapella part at the end of eulogy. upon listening to that, anyone who doesnt know how to play drums will say that is as simple as you can get when really it is probably one of the most difficult patterns ive ever been able to play. dude EXACTLY! people say that about adam jones too, like yeah if you had sheet music of his playing it wouldnt be too hard to play but writing it is a whole different story, he melds so well with the rest of the band. tool is the best

  • Adam services the music, he has his sound and it's undoubtedly him, you can't miss him. That Eulogy part, he actually said that came about easly because it felt natural. Makes you wonder where his mind is at when a 3/16 polyrhythm "feels natural"

  • yeah man i had to fight myself tooth and nail to get that pattern down. i wish i could just overlap the two rhythms in my head instead of writing it out which is the way i learned it. if you can think it out you can play any polyrhythm

  • There is much I can't play of Tool, however, I must say that for me, that Eulogy part just clicked one day. In my head it made sense. I had an interesting swapping of theories with someone on here...I taught them how to play that and they taught me the Lateralus bridge. He could do one and not the other and it was vice versa for me. Quite strange

  • yeah i get what your saying. i learned to play pushit it first and if you play the beginning of pushit every third sixteenth is also an open hat so that kinda gave me a little training on just making that left foot into auto-pilot mode you know

  • Yeh, which is fine until it all changes lol

  • even adams sheet music is difficult.

  • acapella?

  • I couldn't agree with you more. Yes, Adam Jones music is fairly simple to play(minus some effects that are hard to replicate) but creating the music that he does is a whole other story! I have argued this til I was blue in the face with ignorant people!

  • yeah man all you need to say is that adam doesnt play to be a great guitarist, he plays to add to the overall sound of the BAND. Tool is the best because they all work together so fucking brilliantly with such fluid chemistry. most bands have a definite lead, most of the time the singer (at least these days) there is no lead in Tool. they all constantly rely on each other to maintain balance, its not just someone making all the excitement while the others are in the background

  • adams tone makes up for his lack of "sweeping" to the technical players out here lol

  • you ever seen them live, no one is in the back, they are all on stage in a line going across the stage. no one is in front and no one is in back, its cause they are a band, not a sick ass guitar player with a drummer and a bass in the background.

  • I saw them Live on a lateralus tour years ago and maynard was in the back. I dont think how they orientate themselves as a live band has anything to do with how incredible they are.

  • are you kidding? of course it does. why else would they arranage themselves any diffferently than any other rock band

  • for one danny and maynard are in the back so i don't think you know what you are taking about...

  • Its fact that maynard likes to be able to do his own thing out of the 'limelight' so to speak. It fuckin works so who gives two tosses of a lambs gems anyhow motherfuckas. ENJOY what they bring, dont ANALyze it. If they wanted you to know you would? Think about it.

  • @clbgeballe I saw that tour. If I remember correctly, Maynard was standing in front of this big square-shaped light that would change colors. He looked like a silhouette back there squirming around. Great show except for the torrential downpour.

  • Also, I love that he always services the song with as much thought as possible. It's not always showing off, it's actually musical....and STILL tough going :-)

  • my GOD

  • awesome, thanks for sharing the video

  • Danny played a solo at his kit alone before any of the songs. Anyone have any footage of that?

  • as of now there's not much of that one, people were still coming back in the auditorium from the break after aloke was done playing. there is a couple clips of it out there...bmb8609 has a short one, not good audio though.

  • i recorded this with an Olympus digital camera, sorry for the crudeness on audio & video

  • I'm sure someone else will post the same song soon. The other 3 have been posted with good audio/video. I was there just no camcorder.

  • @enreekay13 No apology necessary. It's better than nothing. Thanks for posting. It helped clear up a couple of questions that I had concerning his drum parts.
